Collective oscillations of a Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

Abstract

A sum rule approach is used to calculate the zero temperature oscillation frequencies of a two component trapped atomic Fermi gas in the Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer--Bose Einstein condensation crossover region. These sum rules are evaluated using a local density approximation which explicitly includes Feshbach molecules. Breathing modes show nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the interaction strength, while quadrupole modes are insensitive to interactions for both spherically symmetric and axially symmetric traps. Quantitative agreement is found with experiments on atomic $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ systems and with other theoretical approaches.

Condensate fraction of a Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

Luca Salasnich, Nicola Manini, Alberto Parola

We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation of fermionic pairs in a uniform two-component Fermi gas, obtaining an explicit formula for the condensate density as a function of the chemical potential and the energy gap. We analyze the condensate fraction in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly interacting Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensate of molecular dimers. By using the local-density approximation we study confined Fermi vapors of alkali-metal atoms for which there is experimental evidence of condensation also on the BCS side of the Feshbach resonance. Our theoretical results are in agreement with these experimental data and give the behavior of the condensate on both sides of the Feshbach resonance at zero temperature.

Collective modes of trapped superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover beyond the mean-field approximation

Siqin Cao, Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

A perturbation method is developed for calculating the oscillating frequencies of collective modes of trapped superfluid Fermi gases from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Based on the complete and orthogonal eigenfunction set obtained recently and a series expansion of the equation of state beyond the mean-field approximation, the corrections of eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of all collective modes are given systematically, which are valid for various superfluid regimes in the BCS-BEC crossover beyond the mean-field approximation. Expressions of frequency correction of the collective modes for both spherical and axial symmetric traps excited near the BCS, BEC, and unitarity limits are provided explicitly, and their dependence on interatomic interaction strength and anisotropic trapping parameter is also discussed in detail.

Hydrodynamic modes in a trapped strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms

Yeong E. Kim, Alexander L. Zubarev

The zero-temperature properties of a dilute two-component Fermi gas in the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer phase–Bose–Einstein condensate crossover are investigated. On the basis of a generalization of the variational Schwinger method, we construct approximate semi-analytical formulae for collective frequencies of the radial and the axial breathing modes of the Fermi gas under harmonic confinement in the framework of the hydrodynamic theory. It is shown that the method gives nearly exact solutions.

Collective excitations of strongly interacting Fermi gases of atoms in a harmonic trap

Yeong E. Kim, Alexander L. Zubarev

The zero-temperature properties of a dilute two-component Fermi gas in the BCS to Bose-Einstein Condensation crossover are investigated. On the basis of a generalization of the Hylleraas-Undheim method, we construct rigorous upper bounds to the collective frequencies for the radial and the axial breathing mode of the Fermi gas under harmonic confinement in the framework of the hydrodynamic theory. The bounds are compared to experimental data for trapped vapors of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms.

Collective oscillation modes of a superfluid Bose–Fermi mixture

Wen Wen, Ying Wang, Jianyong Wang

Abstract In this work, we present a theoretical study for the collective oscillation modes, i.e. quadrupole, radial and axial mode, of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in harmonic trapping potentials with cylindrical symmetry of experimental interest. To this end, we start from the coupled superfluid hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures and use the scaling theory that has been developed for a coupled system. The collective oscillation modes of Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures are found to crucially depend on the overlap integrals of the spatial derivations of density profiles of the Bose and Fermi superfluids at equilibrium. We not only present the explicit expressions for the overlap density integrals, as well as the frequencies of the collective modes provided that the effective Bose–Fermi coupling is weak, but also test the valid regimes of the analytical approximations by numerical calculations in realistic experimental conditions. In the presence of a repulsive Bose–Fermi interaction, we find that the frequencies of the three collective modes of the Bose and Fermi superfluids are all upshifted, and the change speeds of the frequency shifts in the BCS–BEC crossover can characterize the different groundstate phases of the Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures for different trap geometries.

Collective Modes and Ballistic Expansion of a Fermi Gas in the BCS-BEC Crossover

Hui Hu, Anna Minguzzi, Xia-Ji Liu +1 more

We evaluate the frequencies of collective modes and the anisotropic expansion rate of a harmonically trapped Fermi superfluid at varying coupling strengths across a Feshbach resonance driving a BCS-BEC crossover. The equations of motion for the superfluid are obtained from a microscopic mean-field expression for the compressibility and are solved within a scaling ansatz. Our results confirm nonmonotonic behavior in the crossover region and are in quantitative agreement with current measurements of the transverse breathing mode by Kinast et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150402 (2004)]] and of the axial breathing mode by Bartenstein et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 203201 (2004)]].
