Abstract

We apply the formulation developed in a recent paper [Y. Ohashi and A. Griffin, Phys. Rev. A 72, 013601 (2005)] for single-particle excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover to the case of a broad Feshbach resonance. At $T=0$, we solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes coupled equations taking into account a Bose condensate of bound states (molecules). In the case of a broad resonance, the density profile $n(r)$, as well as the profile of the superfluid order parameter $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(r)$, are spatially spread out to the Thomas-Fermi radius, even in the crossover region. This order parameter $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(r)$ suppresses the effects of low-energy Andreev bound states on the rf tunneling current. As a result, the peak energy in the rf spectrum is found to occur at an energy equal to the superfluid order parameter $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(r=0)$ at the center of the trap, in contrast to the case of a narrow resonance, and in agreement with recent measurements. The local density approximation is found to give a good approximation for the rf-tunneling spectrum.

Single-particle excitations in a trapped gas of Fermi atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover region

Yoji Ohashi, Adam Griffin

We investigate the single-particle properties at $T=0$ of a trapped superfluid gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. A tunable pairing interaction associated with the Feshbach resonance leads to the BCS--Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover, where the character of superfluidity continuously changes from the BCS-type to a BEC of composite bosons. In this paper, we extend our previous work for a uniform superfluid Fermi gas [Y. Ohashi and A. Griffin, Phys. Rev. A 67, 063612 (2003)] to include the effect of a harmonic trap. We do not use the local density approximation (LDA), but directly solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) coupled equations. While our explicit numerical solutions are for a weak (narrow) Feshbach resonance, we argue that the single-particle BdG excitation spectrum will exhibit the same features for a strong (broad) Feshbach resonance. Using these equations, we find self-consistent values for the spatially dependent local density $n(\mathbf{r})$ as well as the composite BCS order parameter $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(\mathbf{r})$, the latter describing both the Cooper-pair and molecular condensate contributions. Using these results, we calculate the single-particle density of states in the crossover region, and from this determine the true single-particle energy gap $({E}_{g})$ of the trapped Fermi superfluid. This is associated with the in-gap (or Andreev) states in the low-density region at the edge of the trap. We calculate the laser-induced tunneling current $I(\ensuremath{\omega})$ into another hyperfine state, as measured in recent rf spectroscopy experiments. This rf spectrum gives a direct probe of the quasiparticle spectrum. We show how the high-energy part of $I(\ensuremath{\omega})$ gives information about $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(r=0)$ at the center of the trap (which is comparable to the Fermi energy ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{F}$ in the crossover region). We show that $I(\ensuremath{\omega})$ is very dependent on the spatial profile of the pair potential $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(r)$ that is used. We also emphasize that the narrow ``unpaired atom" peak in the rf data gives information about ${E}_{g}$ and the low-energy $(⪡{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{F})$ in-gap states of a Fermi superfluid. While our calculations are limited to $T=0$, we use them to discuss the recent data of Chin et al. and the LDA calculations of T\"orm\"a and co-workers. The LDA, while useful, can lead to an incorrect physical picture of the low-density surface region of the Fermi superfluid.

Collective modes and the effect of single-particle excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover region of a trapped Fermi superfluid

Yoji Ohashi, Allan Griffin

We investigate the collective oscillations in the BCS-BEC crossover region of a trapped Fermi superfluid at T=0. We explicitly include the effect of a Feshbach resonance, which leads to a tunable pairing interaction adjusted by the threshold energy of the resonance, as well as the associated mol ecules. In a previous paper,we obtained solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes coupled equations, describing a trapped Fermi superfluid ga s. Using these Bogoliubov quasi-particle excitations, we calculate the density correlation function in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov generalized random phase approximation (HFB-GRPA). Previous discussions of collective modes were based on solving the T=0 equation of motion for the superfluid in a trap, ignoring the effect of single-particle excitations. We determine the frequencies of the quadrupole and the monopole modes. In the crossover region, the frequencies of these two modes are shown to be stro ngly depressed by the threshold energy of the two-particle continuum, originating from Andreev single-particle bound states (or in-gap states) localized at the edge of the trap. This effect becomes less important as one enters the BEC regime, due to the absence of these low energy fermion bound states. This suppression of collective mode frequencies by the two-particle continuum may be a useful experimental signature of the single-particle energy gap in the crossover region of trapped Fermi superfluids.

Self-consistent theory of atomic Fermi gases with a Feshbach resonance at the superfluid transition

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

A self-consistent theory is derived to describe the BCS--Bose-Einstein-condensate crossover for a strongly interacting Fermi gas with a Feshbach resonance. In the theory the fluctuation of the dressed molecules, consisting of both preformed Cooper pairs and ``bare'' Feshbach molecules, has been included within a self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, beyond the Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink strategy considered by Ohashi and Griffin. The resulting self-consistent equations are solved numerically to investigate the normal-state properties of the crossover at various resonance widths. It is found that the superfluid transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ increases monotonically at all widths as the effective interaction between atoms becomes more attractive. Furthermore, a residue factor ${Z}_{m}$ of the molecule's Green function and a complex effective mass have been determined to characterize the fraction and lifetime of Feshbach molecules at ${T}_{c}$. Our many-body calculations of ${Z}_{m}$ agree qualitatively well with recent measurments of the gas of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms near the broad resonance at $834\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{G}$. The crossover from narrow to broad resonances has also been studied.

Bogoliubov theory of Feshbach molecules in the BEC-BCS crossover

M. W. J. Romans, Henk T. C. Stoof

We present the Bogoliubov theory for the Bose-Einstein condensation of Feshbach molecules in a balanced Fermi mixture. Because the Bogoliubov theory includes (Gaussian) fluctuations, we can in this manner accurately incorporate both the two-body and many-body aspects of the BEC-BCS crossover that occurs near a Feshbach resonance. We apply the theory in particular to the very broad Feshbach resonance in atomic $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ at a magnetic field of ${B}_{0}=834\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{G}$ and find good agreement with experiments in that case. The BEC-BCS crossover for more narrow Feshbach resonances is also discussed.

BCS-BEC crossover in an ultracold Fermi gas.

Wei Yi

This thesis summarizes our study on the properties of ultracold Fermions near a Feshbach resonance. The Feshbach resonance allows for a continuous tuning of the interaction strength between the atoms. With this tunability, many properties predicted for the BCS-BEC crossover region in solids can be shown to exist in this ultracold Fermi gas. With the highly controllable parameters and the clean environment in the experiments, the study of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) crossover in ultracold Fermions provides valuable insights to the strongly interacting crossover region, which has never been achieved before in solids. We first examine the properties of 6 Li and 40 K gases. We find that in the unitary region the properties of the system do not depend on the atom species: outside the unitary region, the properties of the system do depend on the scattering properties of the different atom species. We study the dynamics of the ultracold Fermions in the crossover region in response to the variations in the external magnetic field. We find that the response depends on the time scale and the amplitude of the variations; which is in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations. We derive a set of dynamic mean-field equations for a Fermi gas in an arbitrary potential trap near a wide Feshbach resonance. The equations are more general than the local density approximation (LDA), and less demanding computationally as the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes (BdG) equation. We then analyze the solubility of the equations, as well as solve a simplified version of the equations for illustration and for self-consistency check on the assumptions made during the derivation. We systematically study the possible phases for a trapped Fermi gas with population imbalance near a Feshbach resonance. Our results agree qualitatively well with the recent experimental results, and predict the existence of two exotic non-BCS superfluid phases for the strongly interacting gas with population unbalance: the Breached Pair (BP) phase and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. Finally, to guide the experimental efforts in the search of new quantum phases, we propose a detection scheme for the possible exotic phases.

Vortex state in a superfluid Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

Yuki Kawaguchi, Tetsuo Ohmi

We consider a single vortex in a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover regime near a Feshbach resonance. The effect of the molecular Bose-Einstein condensate upon the vortex structure is discussed within the mean field approximation at zero temperature. Using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation of the fermion-boson coupled model, we calculate density distributions of atoms and molecules. As the number of the molecules increases, both atomic and molecular density changes from BCS-like distribution to BEC-like. We also study the change of the vortex core size in the crossover regime.
