Pseudopotential in resonant regimes

Abstract

The zero-range potential approach is extended for the description of situations where two-body scattering is resonant in arbitrary partial waves. The formalism generalizes the Fermi pseudopotential which can be used only for $s$-wave broad resonances. In a given channel, the interaction is described either in terms of a contact condition on the wave function or with a family of pseudopotentials. We show that it is necessary to introduce a regularized scalar product for wave functions obtained in the zero-range potential formalism (except for the Fermi pseudopotential). This metrics shows that the geometry of these Hilbert spaces depends crucially on the interaction.

Modeling Interactions for Resonant p -Wave Scattering

Ludovic Pricoupenko

In view of recent experiments on ultracold polarized fermions, the zero-range potential approach is generalized to situations where two-body scattering is resonant in the p-wave channel. We introduce a modified scalar product which reveals a deep relation between the geometry of the Hilbert space and the interaction. This formulation is used to obtain a simple interpretation for the transfer rates between atomic and molecular states within a two branches picture of the many-body system close to resonance. At resonance, the energy of the dilute gas is found to vary linearly with density.

Coupled-channel pseudopotential description of the Feshbach resonance in two dimensions

Krittika Kanjilal, D. Blume

We derive pseudopotentials that describe the scattering between two particles in two dimensions for any partial wave $m$, whose scattering strength is parametrized in terms of the phase shift ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{m}$. Using our $m=0$ pseudopotential, we develop a coupled-channel model with two-dimensional (2D) zero-range interactions, which describes the two-body physics across a Feshbach resonance. Our model predicts the scattering length, the binding energy, and the ``closed channel molecular fraction'' of two particles; these observables can be measured in experiments on ultracold quasi-2D atomic Bose and Fermi gases with present-day technology.

Generalized Pseudopotentials for Higher Partial Wave Scattering

R. Stock, Andrew Silberfarb, Eric L. Bolda +1 more

We derive a generalized zero-range pseudopotential applicable to all partial wave solutions to the Schrödinger equation based on a delta-shell potential in the limit that the shell radius approaches zero. This properly models all higher order multipole moments not accounted for with a monopolar delta function at the origin, as used in the familiar Fermi pseudopotential for s-wave scattering. By making the strength of the potential energy dependent, we derive self-consistent solutions for the entire energy spectrum of the realistic potential. We apply this to study two particles in an isotropic harmonic trap, interacting through a central potential, and derive analytic expressions for the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues.

Mixed-partial-wave scattering with spin-orbit coupling and validity of pseudopotentials

Xiaoling Cui

We present exact solutions of a two-body problem for spin-$1/2$ fermions with isotropic spin-orbit (SO) coupling and interacting with an arbitrary short-range potential. We find that in each partial-wave scattering channel, the parametrization of a two-body wave function at short interparticle distance depends on the scattering amplitudes of all channels. This reveals the mixed-partial-wave scattering induced by SO couplings. By comparing with results from a square-well potential, we investigate the validity of original pseudopotential models in the presence of SO coupling. We find the $s$-wave pseudopotential provides a good approximation for low-energy solutions near $s$-wave resonances, given the length scale of SO coupling much longer than the potential range. However, near $p$-wave resonance the $p$-wave pseudopotential gives low-energy solutions that are qualitatively different from exact ones, based on which we conclude that the $p$-wave model can not be applied to the fermion system if the SO coupling strength is larger or comparable to the Fermi momentum.

Pseudopotential Analog for Zero-Range Photoassociation and Feshbach Resonance

M. G. Moore

A zero-range approach to atom-molecule coupling is developed in analogy to the Fermi-Huang pseudopotential approach to collisions. It is shown by explicit comparison to an exactly solvable finite-range model that replacing the molecular bound-state wave function with a regularized delta function can reproduce the exact scattering amplitude in the long-wavelength limit. Using this approach, we find an analytical solution to the two-channel Feshbach resonance problem for two atoms in a spherical harmonic trap, highlighting the strong dependence of the effective scattering length and bare-molecule population on the atom-molecule coupling strength.

Fermi pseudopotential in arbitrary dimensions

K. Wódkiewicz

The theory of zero-range potentials is investigated in an arbitrary number of dimensions. Except for the trivial one-dimensional case the zero-range potentials are described by nonlocal operators called Fermi pseudopotentials. It is shown that in odd dimensions the Fermi pseudopotentials involve a very simple regularization operator. In even dimensions with the help of dimensional regularization, explicit formulas for the Fermi pseudopotentials are derived. The Green's functions, the propagators, and the exact solutions of the Lippmann-Schwinger equations are derived in explicit forms. In odd dimensions d=1 and 3 the Fermi pseudopotentials can be applied to describe multiphoton processes of atoms and molecules with very short-range interactions. In even dimension d=2 the Fermi pseudopotential can be applied to describe tunneling from laser-driven quantum wells. Physical applications involving higher d are also possible.
