Generalized Pseudopotentials for Higher Partial Wave Scattering

Abstract

We derive a generalized zero-range pseudopotential applicable to all partial wave solutions to the Schrödinger equation based on a delta-shell potential in the limit that the shell radius approaches zero. This properly models all higher order multipole moments not accounted for with a monopolar delta function at the origin, as used in the familiar Fermi pseudopotential for s-wave scattering. By making the strength of the potential energy dependent, we derive self-consistent solutions for the entire energy spectrum of the realistic potential. We apply this to study two particles in an isotropic harmonic trap, interacting through a central potential, and derive analytic expressions for the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues.

Quasi-Hermitian pseudopotential for higher partial wave scattering

Iris Reichenbach, Andrew Silberfarb, R. Stock +1 more

We formulate a quasi-Hermitian delta-shell pseudopotential for higher partial wave scattering, and show that any such potential must have an energy-dependent regularization. The quasi-Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian leads to a complete set of biorthogonal wave functions that can be used as a basis to expand and diagonalize other two-body Hamiltonians. We demonstrate this procedure for the case of ultracold atoms in a polarization-gradient optical lattice, interacting pairwise when two atoms are transported together from separated lattice sites. Here the pseudopotential depends explicitly on the trapping potential. Additionally, we calculate the location of trap-induced resonances for higher partial waves, which occur when a molecular eigenstate is shifted to resonance with a trap eigenstate. We verify the accuracy of the pseudopotential approach using a toy model in which a square well acts as the true interaction potential, and see excellent agreement.

Pseudopotential Method for Higher Partial Wave Scattering

Zbigniew Idziaszek, Tommaso Calarco

We present a zero-range pseudopotential applicable for all partial wave interactions between neutral atoms. For p and d waves, we derive effective pseudopotentials, which are useful for problems involving anisotropic external potentials. Finally, we consider two nontrivial applications of the p-wave pseudopotential: we solve analytically the problem of two interacting spin-polarized fermions confined in a harmonic trap, and we analyze the scattering of p-wave interacting particles in a quasi-two-dimensional system.

Generalization of the Fermi pseudopotential

Trang T. Le, Zach Osman, D K Watson +2 more

Abstract Introduced eighty years ago, the Fermi pseudopotential has been a powerful concept in multiple fields of physics. It replaces the detailed shape of a potential by a delta-function operator multiplied by a parameter giving the strength of the potential. For Cartesian dimensions d > 1, a regularization operator is necessary to remove singularities in the wave function. In this study, we develop a Fermi pseudopotential generalized to d dimensions (including non-integer) and to non-zero wavenumber, k . Our new fractional calculus approach has the advantage of circumventing singularities that occur in the wave function at integer values of d while being valid arbitrarily close to integer d . In the limit of integer dimension, we show that our generalized pseudopotential is equivalent to previously derived s -wave pseudopotentials. Our pseudopotential generalizes the operator to non-integer dimension, includes energy ( k ) dependence, and simplifies the dimension-dependent coupling constant expression derived from a Green’s function approach. We apply this pseudopotential to the problem of two cold atoms ( k → 0) in a harmonic trap and extend the energy expression to arbitrary dimension.

Pseudopotential in resonant regimes

Ludovic Pricoupenko

The zero-range potential approach is extended for the description of situations where two-body scattering is resonant in arbitrary partial waves. The formalism generalizes the Fermi pseudopotential which can be used only for $s$-wave broad resonances. In a given channel, the interaction is described either in terms of a contact condition on the wave function or with a family of pseudopotentials. We show that it is necessary to introduce a regularized scalar product for wave functions obtained in the zero-range potential formalism (except for the Fermi pseudopotential). This metrics shows that the geometry of these Hilbert spaces depends crucially on the interaction.

Mixed-partial-wave scattering with spin-orbit coupling and validity of pseudopotentials

Xiaoling Cui

We present exact solutions of a two-body problem for spin-$1/2$ fermions with isotropic spin-orbit (SO) coupling and interacting with an arbitrary short-range potential. We find that in each partial-wave scattering channel, the parametrization of a two-body wave function at short interparticle distance depends on the scattering amplitudes of all channels. This reveals the mixed-partial-wave scattering induced by SO couplings. By comparing with results from a square-well potential, we investigate the validity of original pseudopotential models in the presence of SO coupling. We find the $s$-wave pseudopotential provides a good approximation for low-energy solutions near $s$-wave resonances, given the length scale of SO coupling much longer than the potential range. However, near $p$-wave resonance the $p$-wave pseudopotential gives low-energy solutions that are qualitatively different from exact ones, based on which we conclude that the $p$-wave model can not be applied to the fermion system if the SO coupling strength is larger or comparable to the Fermi momentum.

Pseudopotential treatment of two aligned dipoles under external harmonic confinement

Krittika Kanjilal, John L. Bohn, D. Blume

Dipolar Bose and Fermi gases, which are currently being studied extensively experimentally and theoretically, interact through anisotropic, long-range potentials. Here, we replace the long-range potential by a zero-range pseudopotential that simplifies the theoretical treatment of two dipolar particles in a harmonic trap. Our zero-range pseudopotential description reproduces the energy spectrum of two dipoles interacting through a shape-dependent potential under external confinement very well, provided that sufficiently many partial waves are included, and readily leads to a classification scheme of the energy spectrum in terms of approximate angular momentum quantum numbers. The results may be directly relevant to the physics of dipolar gases loaded into optical lattices.
