Abstract

The exact solution of the one-dimensional interacting mixed boson-fermion gas is used to calculate ground-state properties both for finite systems and in the thermodynamic limit. The quasimomentum distribution, ground-state energy, and generalized velocities are obtained as functions of the interaction strength both for polarized and nonpolarized fermions. We do not observe any demixing instability of the system for repulsive interactions.

Strongly interacting Bose–Fermi mixtures in one dimension

Haiping Hu, Liming Guan, Shu Chen

We study one-dimensional (1D) strongly interacting Bose–Fermi mixtures by both the exact Bethe-ansatz method and variational perturbation theory within the degenerate ground state subspace of the system in the infinitely repulsive limit. Based on the exact solution of the 1D Bose–Fermi gas with equal boson–boson and boson–fermion interaction strengths, we demonstrate that the ground state energy is degenerate for different Bose–Fermi configurations and the degeneracy is lifted when the interaction deviates the infinitely interacting limit. We then show that the ground properties in the strongly interacting regime can be well characterized by using the variational perturbation method within the degenerate ground state subspace, which can be applied to deal with more general cases with anisotropic interactions and in external traps. Our results indicate that the total ground-state density profile in the strongly repulsive regime behaves like the polarized non-interacting fermions, whereas the density distributions of bosons and fermions display different properties for different Bose–Fermi configurations and are sensitive to the anisotropy of interactions.

Mixture of interacting supersymmetric spinless fermions and bosons in a one-dimensional trap

P. Schlottmann

We consider a gas mixture consisting of spinless fermions and bosons in one dimension interacting via a repulsive [Formula: see text]-function potential. Bosons and fermions are assumed to have equal masses and the interaction strength between bosons and among bosons and fermions is the same. Using the Bethe ansatz solution of the model, we study the ground state properties, the dressed energy potentials for the two bands of rapidities, the elementary particle and hole excitations, the thermodynamics, the finite size corrections to the ground state energy leading to the conformal towers, and the asymptotic behavior at large distances of some relevant correlation functions. The low-energy excitations of the system form a two-component Luttinger liquid. In an elongated optical trap the gas phase separates as a function of the distance from the center of the trap.

Exact results for the 1D interacting Fermi gas with arbitrary polarization

We investigate the 1D interacting two-component Fermi gas with arbitrary polarization. Exact results for the ground state energy, quasimomentum distribution functions, spin velocity and charge velocity reveal subtle polarization dependent quantum effects.

Spin-chain model for strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

F. Deuretzbacher, D. Becker, J. Bjerlin +2 more

Strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose--Fermi mixtures form a tunable $XXZ$ spin chain. Within the spin-chain model developed here, all properties of these systems can be calculated from states representing the ordering of the bosons and fermions within the atom chain and from the ground-state wave function of spinless noninteracting fermions. We validate the model by means of an exact diagonalization of the full few-body Hamiltonian in the strongly interacting regime. Using the model, we explore the phase diagram of the atom chain as a function of the boson-boson (BB) and boson-fermion (BF) interaction strengths and calculate the densities, momentum distributions, and trap-level occupancies for up to 17 particles. In particular, we find antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) order and a demixing of the bosons and fermions in certain interaction regimes. We find, however, no demixing for equally strong BB and BF interactions, in agreement with earlier calculations that combined the Bethe ansatz with a local-density approximation.

Interacting Fermions in One Dimension. I. Repulsive Potential

James McGuire

The exact energies and wavefunctions for the ground state and low-lying excited states of a system of N − 1 one-dimensional fermions all of the same spin and one fermion of the opposite spin are calculated in the large-volume, finite-density limit when the particles interact via a repulsive delta function potential. A number of properties of the system such as pair correlation functions and the effective mass of a certain class of excitations are also discussed.

Exact ground-state properties of a one-dimensional Coulomb gas

G. E. Astrakharchik, Marvin D. Girardeau

The ground-state properties of a single-component one-dimensional Coulomb gas are investigated. We use Bose-Fermi mapping for the ground-state wave function which permits solution of the Fermi sign problem in the following respects: (i) the nodal surface is known, permitting exact calculations; and (ii) evaluation of determinants is avoided, reducing the numerical complexity to that of a bosonic system and, thus, allowing simulation of a large number of fermions. Due to the mapping, the energy and local properties in one-dimensional Coulomb systems are exactly the same for Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. The exact ground-state energy is calculated in homogeneous and trapped geometries using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. We show that in the low-density Wigner crystal limit an elementary low-lying excitation is a plasmon, which is to be contrasted with the high-density ideal Fermi gas/Tonks-Girardeau limit, where low-lying excitations are phonons. Exact density profiles are compared to the ones calculated within the local density approximation, which predicts a change from a semicircular to an inverted parabolic shape of the density profile as the value of the charge is increased.
