Abstract

We study one-dimensional (1D) strongly interacting Bose–Fermi mixtures by both the exact Bethe-ansatz method and variational perturbation theory within the degenerate ground state subspace of the system in the infinitely repulsive limit. Based on the exact solution of the 1D Bose–Fermi gas with equal boson–boson and boson–fermion interaction strengths, we demonstrate that the ground state energy is degenerate for different Bose–Fermi configurations and the degeneracy is lifted when the interaction deviates the infinitely interacting limit. We then show that the ground properties in the strongly interacting regime can be well characterized by using the variational perturbation method within the degenerate ground state subspace, which can be applied to deal with more general cases with anisotropic interactions and in external traps. Our results indicate that the total ground-state density profile in the strongly repulsive regime behaves like the polarized non-interacting fermions, whereas the density distributions of bosons and fermions display different properties for different Bose–Fermi configurations and are sensitive to the anisotropy of interactions.

Exact solution for the degenerate ground-state manifold of a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture

Bess Fang, Patrizia Vignolo, M. Gattobigio +2 more

We present the exact solution for the many-body wavefunction of a one-dimensional mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions with equal masses and infinitely strong repulsive interactions under external confinement. Such a model displays a large degeneracy of the ground state. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we find the solution for the whole set of ground-state wave functions of the degenerate manifold and we characterize them according to group-symmetry considerations. We find that the density profile and the momentum distribution depends on the symmetry of the solution. By combining the wave functions of the degenerate manifold with suitable symmetry and guided by the strong-coupling form of the Bethe-Ansatz solution for the homogeneous system, we propose an analytic expression for the many-body wave function of the inhomogeneous system which well describes the ground state at finite, large, and equal interaction strengths, as validated by numerical simulations.

Ground State Density Distribution of Bose-Fermi Mixture in a One-Dimensional Harmonic Trap

Yajiang Hao

By the density-functional calculation we investigate the ground-state properties of Bose-Fermi mixture confined in one-dimensional harmonic traps. The homogeneous mixture of bosons and polarized fermions with contact interaction can be exactly solved by the Bethe-ansatz method. After giving the exact formula of ground state energy density, we employ the local-density approximation to determine the density distribution of each component. It is shown that with the increase in interaction, the total density distribution evolves to Fermi-like distribution and the system exhibits phase separation between two components when the interaction is strong enough but finite. While in the infinite interaction limit both bosons and fermions display the completely same Fermi-like distributions and phase separation disappears.

Analytical and numerical studies of Bose–Fermi mixtures in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Amin S. Dehkharghani, F. F. Bellotti, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner

Abstract In this paper we study a mixed system of bosons and fermions with up to six particles in total. All particles are assumed to have the same mass. The two-body interactions are repulsive and are assumed to have equal strength in both the Bose–Bose and the Fermi–Boson channels. The particles are confined externally by a harmonic oscillator one-body potential. For the case of four particles, two identical fermions and two identical bosons, we focus on the strongly interacting regime and analyze the system using both an analytical approach and density matrix renormalization group calculations using a discrete version of the underlying continuum Hamiltonian. This provides us with insight into both the ground state and the manifold of excited states that are almost degenerate for large interaction strength. Our results show great variation in the density profiles for bosons and fermions in different states for strongly interacting mixtures. By moving to slightly larger systems, we find that the ground state of balanced mixtures of four to six particles tends to separate bosons and fermions for strong (repulsive) interactions. On the other hand, in imbalanced Bose–Fermi mixtures we find pronounced odd–even effects in systems of five particles. These few-body results suggest that question of phase separation in one-dimensional confined mixtures are very sensitive to system composition, both for the ground state and the excited states.

Exactly solvable case of a one-dimensional Bose–Fermi mixture

Adilet Imambekov, Eugene Demler

We consider a one-dimensional interacting Bose-Fermi mixture with equal masses of bosons and fermions, and with equal and repulsive interactions between Bose-Fermi and Bose-Bose particles. Such a system can be realized in experiments with ultracold boson and fermion isotopes in optical lattices. We use the Bethe-ansatz technique to find the ground state energy at zero temperature for any value of interaction strength and density ratio between bosons and fermions. We prove that the mixture is always stable against demixing. Combining exact solution with the local density approximation, we calculate density profiles and collective oscillation modes in a harmonic trap. In the strongly interating regime, we use exact wave functions to calculate correlation functions for bosons and fermions under periodic boundary conditions.

Fermionization of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Bess Fang, Patrizia Vignolo, Christian Miniatura +1 more

We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a harmonic trap. It consists of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with repulsive hard-core interactions) and of a noninteracting Fermi gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas), both species interacting through hard-core repulsive interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we determine the one-body density matrices, exact particle density profiles, momentum distributions, and behavior of the mixture under 1D expansion when opening the trap. In real space, bosons and fermions do not display any phase separation: the respective density profiles extend over the same region and they both present a number of peaks equal to the total number of particles in the trap. In momentum space the bosonic component has the typical narrow TG profile, while the fermionic component shows a broad distribution with fermionic oscillations at small momenta. Due to the large boson-fermion repulsive interactions, both the bosonic and the fermionic momentum distributions decay as $C{p}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at large momenta, like in the case of a pure bosonic TG gas. The coefficient $C$ is related to the two-body density matrix and to the bosonic concentration in the mixture. When opening the trap, both momentum distributions ``fermionize'' under expansion and turn into that of a Fermi gas with a particle number equal to the total number of particles in the mixture.

Comparing numerical and analytical approaches to strongly interacting Fermi-Fermi and Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimensional traps

F. F. Bellotti, Amin S. Dehkharghani, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner

We investigate one-dimensional harmonically trapped two-component systems for repulsive interaction strengths ranging from the non-interacting to the strongly interacting regime for Fermi-Fermi and Bose-Fermi mixtures. Energies, density profiles and correlation functions are obtained both numerically (DMRG and Exact diagonalization) and analytically. In order to facilitate a direct comparison with DMRG, we introduce a mapping of the energies calculated from a discrete lattice Hamiltonian to that of a continuous Hamiltonian, and show that our DMRG calculations can match the ground state energy for the two-component fermion systems even in the strongly interacting limit. The same is not true for the other features of the ground state and the DMRG method we employ produces unrealistic results when the interaction strength becomes large. Since DMRG results do not converge as the interaction strength is increased, analytical solutions are used as a benchmark to identify the point where the strongly interacting limit is reached numerically in which reasonable agreement between DMRG and analytical results can be obtained. In the case of Bose-Fermi mixtures, we find that the ground state of balanced mixtures of four or six particles tends to separate bosons and fermions, while in imbalanced Bose-Fermi mixtures we find pronounced odd-even effects in systems of four or five particles. These few-body results suggest that question of phase separation in one-dimensional confined mixtures are very sensitive to system composition.
