Abstract

We study a model of frustration of decoherence in an open quantum system. Contrary to other dissipative Ohmic impurity models, such as the Kondo model or the dissipative two-level system, the impurity model discussed here never presents overdamped dynamics even for strong coupling to the environment. We show that this unusual effect has its origins in the quantum-mechanical nature of the coupling between the quantum impurity and the environment. We study the problem using analytic and numerical renormalization group methods and obtain expressions for the frequency and temperature dependence of the impurity susceptibility in different regimes.

Quantum impurity models of noisy qubits

Dmitri V. Khveshchenko

We demonstrate that the problem of coupled two-level systems ("qubits") which are also subject to a generic (sub-)Ohmic dissipative environment belongs to the same class of models as those describing (non)magnetic impurities embedded in strongly correlated systems. A further insight into the generalized single- and two-impurity Bose/Fermi Kondo models enables one to make specific recommendations towards a systematic engineering of highly coherent multiqubit assemblies for potential applications in quantum information processing.

Suppression of decoherence dynamics by a dissipative bath at strong coupling

Jitian Chen, Jakub Garwoła, Dvira Segal

Control of decoherence in open quantum systems has become a topic of great interest due to the emergence of quantum technologies that depend on quantum coherent effects. In this work, we investigate the decoherence dynamics of systems coupled to multiple baths through noncommuting systems' operators, and beyond the weak system-bath coupling limit. By building on cooperative effects between baths, we propose a novel strategy to mitigate rapid decoherence. Concretely, we study the dynamics of a qubit coupled to multiple environments with arbitrary interaction strengths, and along different coordinates. Based on insights gained on the decoherence dynamics from the analytical Effective Hamiltonian method, we carry out numerical simulations using the Reaction Coordinate quantum master equation method. In contrast to standard expectations, we show that when the system strongly interacts with a decohering bath, increasing its coupling to a second, dissipative bath slows down the decoherence dynamics. Our work offers insights into the preservation of quantum coherences in open quantum systems based on frustration effects, by utilizing cooperative effects between different heat baths.

Quantum dynamics of the dissipative two-state system coupled with a sub-Ohmic bath

Zhiguo Lü, Hang Zheng

The decoherence of a two-state system coupled with a sub-Ohmic bath is investigated theoretically by means of the perturbation approach based on a unitary transformation. It is shown that the decoherence depends strongly and sensitively on the structure of environment. Nonadiabatic effect is treated through the introduction of a function ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{k}$ which depends on the boson frequency and renormalized tunneling. The results are as follows: (i) the nonequilibrium correlation function $P(t)$, the dynamical susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$, and the equilibrium correlation function $C(t)$ are analytically obtained for $s\ensuremath{\leqslant}1$; (ii) the phase diagram of thermodynamic transition shows the delocalized-localized transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{l}$ which agrees with exact results and numerical data from the numerical renormalization group; (iii) the dynamical transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$ between coherent and incoherent phase is explicitly given. A crossover from the coherent oscillation to incoherent relaxation appears with increasing coupling (for $\ensuremath{\alpha}>{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$, the coherent dynamics disappear); (iv) the Shiba's relation and sum rule are exactly satisfied when $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\leqslant}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$; (v) an underdamping-overdamping transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}^{*}$ exists in the function $S(\ensuremath{\omega})$. Consequently, the dynamical phase diagrams in both ohmic and sub-Ohmic case are mapped out. For $\ensuremath{\Delta}⪡{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$, the critical couplings (${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{l},{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$, and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}^{*}$) are proportional to ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{1\ensuremath{-}s}$.

Unveiling hidden scaling relations in dissipative relaxation dynamics of strongly correlated quantum impurity systems

Xu Ding, D. T. Zhang, Hou-Dao Zhang +2 more

Understanding the time evolution of strongly correlated open quantum systems (OQSs) in response to perturbations (quenches) is of fundamental importance to the precise control of quantum devices. It is, however, rather challenging in multi-impurity quantum systems because such evolution often involves multiple intricate dynamical processes. In this work, we apply the numerically exact hierarchical equations of motion approach to explore the influence of two different types of perturbations, i.e., sudden swapping of the energy levels of impurity systems and activating the inter-impurity spin-exchange interaction, on the dissipation dynamics of the Kondo-correlated two-impurity Anderson model over a wide range of energetic parameters. By evaluating the time-dependent impurity spectral function and other system properties, we analyze the time evolution of the Kondo state in detail and conclude a phenomenologically scaling relation for Kondo dynamics driven by these perturbations. The evolutionary scaling relationship is not only related to the Kondo characteristic energy TK but also significantly affected by the simultaneous non-Kondo dynamic characteristic energy. We expect these results will inspire subsequent theoretical studies on the dynamics of strongly correlated OQSs.

Extended dissipaton equation of motion for electronic open quantum systems: Application to the Kondo impurity model

Yu Su, Zi‐Hao Chen, Yao Wang +3 more

In this paper, we present an extended dissipaton equation of motion for studying the dynamics of electronic impurity systems. Compared with the original theoretical formalism, the quadratic couplings are introduced into the Hamiltonian accounting for the interaction between the impurity and its surrounding environment. By exploiting the quadratic fermionic dissipaton algebra, the proposed extended dissipaton equation of motion offers a powerful tool for studying the dynamical behaviors of electronic impurity systems, particularly in situations where nonequilibrium and strongly correlated effects play significant roles. Numerical demonstrations are carried out to investigate the temperature dependence of the Kondo resonance in the Kondo impurity model.
