Abstract

The decoherence of a two-state system coupled with a sub-Ohmic bath is investigated theoretically by means of the perturbation approach based on a unitary transformation. It is shown that the decoherence depends strongly and sensitively on the structure of environment. Nonadiabatic effect is treated through the introduction of a function ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{k}$ which depends on the boson frequency and renormalized tunneling. The results are as follows: (i) the nonequilibrium correlation function $P(t)$, the dynamical susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$, and the equilibrium correlation function $C(t)$ are analytically obtained for $s\ensuremath{\leqslant}1$; (ii) the phase diagram of thermodynamic transition shows the delocalized-localized transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{l}$ which agrees with exact results and numerical data from the numerical renormalization group; (iii) the dynamical transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$ between coherent and incoherent phase is explicitly given. A crossover from the coherent oscillation to incoherent relaxation appears with increasing coupling (for $\ensuremath{\alpha}>{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$, the coherent dynamics disappear); (iv) the Shiba's relation and sum rule are exactly satisfied when $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\leqslant}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$; (v) an underdamping-overdamping transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}^{*}$ exists in the function $S(\ensuremath{\omega})$. Consequently, the dynamical phase diagrams in both ohmic and sub-Ohmic case are mapped out. For $\ensuremath{\Delta}⪡{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$, the critical couplings (${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{l},{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$, and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}^{*}$) are proportional to ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{1\ensuremath{-}s}$.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a dissipative two-level system: Nonzero bias and sub-Ohmic bath

Congjun Gan, Hang Zheng

The quantum dynamics of the dissipative two-level system with nonzero bias and sub-Ohmic bath is studied by means of the perturbation approach based on a unitary transformation. It has been shown that for the sub-Ohmic bath it is necessary to use the non-Markovian approach, especially for the short time behavior of the coupled system and environment. The nonequilibrium correlation $P(t)$ has been calculated to show that a finite bias may favor the short time coherence. The spectrum of the susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ of the sub-Ohmic case may have a double peak structure in the range of $\ensuremath{\omega}>0$ when the coupling $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ is relatively strong. Besides, the coherence-decoherence transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$ is determined for different $0<s\ensuremath{\le}1$ by the condition of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega}=0)=\ensuremath{\infty}$ when $\ensuremath{\alpha}={\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$. Finally, we show that Shiba's relation is exactly satisfied in our results.

Influence of temperature on coherent dynamics of a two-level system immersed in a dissipative spin bath

Zhiguo Lü, Hang Zheng

The quantum dynamics of a two-level system coupled to an Ohmic spin bath is studied by means of the perturbation approach based on a unitary transformation. A scattering function xi(k) is introduced in the transformation to take into account quantum fluctuations. By the master equation within the Born approximation, nonequilibrium dynamics quantities are calculated. The method works well for the coupling constant 0<alpha<alpha(c) and a finite bare tunneling Delta. It is found that (i) only at zero temperature with small coupling or moderate one does the spin-spin-bath model display identical behavior as the well-known spin-boson-bath model; (ii) in comparison with the known results of spin-boson-bath model, the coherence-incoherence transition point, which occurs at alpha(c)=12[1+etaDelta/omega(c)], is temperature independent; and (iii) the nonequilibrium correlation function P(t)=tau(z)(t), evolves without temperature dependence, while tau(x)(t) depends on temperature. Both P(t) and tau(x)(t) not only satisfy their initial conditions, respectively, and also have correct long time limits. Besides, the Shiba relation and sum rule are exactly satisfied in the coherent regime for this method. Our results show that increasing temperature does not help the system suppress decoherence in the coherent regime, i.e., finite temperature does not favor the coherent dynamics in this regime. Thus, the finite-temperature dynamics induced by two kinds of baths (spin-bath and boson-bath) exhibit distinctly different physics.

Quantum phase transition in a dissipative two-qubit system

Hang Zheng, Zhiguo Lü, Yang Zhao

By means of a unitary transformation, we study quantum phase transitions in the ground state of a two-qubit system interacting with a dissipative reservoir. First, the ground state phase diagram is analyzed in the presence of the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic bath using an analytic ground state wave function which takes into account the competition between intrasite tunneling and intersite correlation. The quantum critical point is determined as the transition point from non-degenerate to degenerate ground state and our calculated critical coupling strength $\alpha_c$ agrees with that from the numerical renormalization group method. Moreover, by computing the entanglement entropy between the qubits and the bath in the ground state, we explore the nature of the quantum phase transition between the delocalized and localized states.

Ansatz for the quantum phase transition in a dissipative two-qubit system

By means of a unitary transformation, we propose an ansatz to study quantum phase transitions in the ground state of a two-qubit system interacting with a dissipative reservoir. First, the ground-state phase diagram is analyzed in the presence of the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic bath using an analytic ground-state wave function that takes into account the competition between intrasite tunneling and intersite correlation. The quantum critical point is determined as the transition point from a nondegenerate to a degenerate ground state, and our calculated critical coupling strength α(c) agrees with that from the numerical renormalization-group method. Moreover, by computing the entanglement entropy between the qubits and the bath as well as the qubit-qubit correlation function in the ground state, we explore the nature of the quantum phase transition between the delocalized and localized states.

Dynamics, synchronization, and quantum phase transitions of two dissipative spins

Peter P. Orth, David Roosen, Walter Hofstetter +1 more

We analyze the static and dynamic properties of two Ising-coupled quantum spins embedded in a common bosonic bath as an archetype of dissipative quantum mechanics. First, we elucidate the ground-state phase diagram for an Ohmic and a sub-Ohmic bath using a combination of bosonic numerical renormalization group (NRG), analytical techniques, and intuitive arguments. Second, by employing the time-dependent NRG we investigate the system's rich dynamical behavior arising from the complex interplay between spin-spin and spin-bath interactions. Interestingly, spin oscillations can synchronize due to the proximity of the common non-Markovian bath and the system displays highly entangled steady states for certain nonequilibrium initial preparations. We complement our nonperturbative numerical results by exact analytical solutions when available and provide quantitative limits on the applicability of the perturbative Bloch-Redfield approach at weak coupling.

Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Dynamics of the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model

Frithjof B. Anders, R. Bulla, Matthias Vojta C

Employing the nonperturbative numerical renormalization group method, we study the dynamics of the spin-boson model, which describes a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with a spectral density J(omega) proportional to omega(s). We show that, in contrast with the case of Ohmic damping, the delocalized phase of the sub-Ohmic model cannot be characterized by a single energy scale only, due to the presence of a nontrivial quantum phase transition. In the strongly sub-Ohmic regime, s<<1, weakly damped coherent oscillations on short time scales are possible even in the localized phase--this is of crucial relevance, e.g., for qubits subject to electromagnetic noise.
