Abstract

We present measurements of the second-order coherence function on emission from single GaN quantum dots. In some cases a large degree of photon antibunching is observed, demonstrating isolation of a single quantum system. For a selected quantum dot, we study the dependence of photon antibunching on excitation power and temperature. Using pulsed excitation, we demonstrate an ultraviolet triggered single-photon source operating at a wavelength of 358nm.

Single-photon emission from a type-B InP∕GaInP quantum dot

Gareth J. Beirne, Peter Michler, Michael Jetter +1 more

Type-B InP∕GaInP quantum dots are expected to exhibit a type-II electronic structure. Evidence for this is provided by the variation in decay time of the ensemble as a function of excitation power density. Photon correlation measurements were subsequently performed on a single type-B InP∕GaInP quantum dot using a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss setup [Nature 178, 1447 (1956)]. Autocorrelation measurements were carried out under both continuous-wave and pulsed excitation conditions with single-photon emission observed in each case. The continuous-wave measurements display a pronounced antibunching dip at zero time delay while pulsed measurements enable the triggered generation of single photons on demand at a wavelength of approximately 750 nm.

Second-Order Correlation Function of the Photon Emission from a Single Quantum Dot

Yaoyi Li, Mu-Tian Cheng, Zhou Hui-Jun +2 more

The photon correlation of photon emission from a single quantum dot with cw excitation and pulsed excitation is investigated in details. To calculate the second-order correlation function for optical pumping, we deduce rate equations with a simplified two-level model under cw excitation and present the master equation approach in the interaction picture to the study of evolution of a three-level system under pulsed excitation. In addition, we report photon correlation measurements on a single self-assembled In 0.5 Ga 0.5 As quantum dot, which show strong antibunching behaviour under both the conditions of cw and pulsed excitations. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental measurements.

Correlation spectroscopy of excitons and biexcitons on a single quantum dot

Val Zwiller, Per Jonsson, Hans Blom +7 more

We report the observation of antibunched emission from single self-assembled InAs quantum dots under various conditions. We have measured the correlation function of the photon emission pertaining to single emission lines from single quantum dots under continuous and pulsed laser excitation, as well as under continuous white light excitation. The measurements were performed under different excitation intensities at liquid helium temperatures on two samples with distinct structures. At higher temperatures (30 K), an antibunching dip was still observed. We have also observed antibunching on a second emission line in the quantum dot spectrum, attributed to the biexciton, demonstrating the possibility of generating photon pairs with a single quantum dot. Polarization correlations on the biexciton and exciton line were also measured in an attempt to generate entangled photon pairs.

Quantum Cascade of Photons in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Emmanuel Moreau, Isabelle Robert-Philip, L. Manin +3 more

We have obtained pairs of correlated single photons from the emission cascade of an isolated InAs quantum dot. The cross-correlation function of the two photons in a pair exhibits the coexistence of asymmetric bunching and antibunching features, which is the signature for their sequential emission with a definite order. This observation opens the way to the use of semiconductor quantum dots as triggered sources of photon pairs with strong quantum correlations for quantum information applications.

Single-Photon Emission from a Single InAs Quantum Dot

Dou Xiu-Ming, Baoquan Sun, Huang She-Song +2 more

Excitation power-dependent micro-photoluminescence spectra and photon-correlation measurement are used to study the optical properties and photon statistics of single InAs quantum dots. Exciton and biexciton emissions, whose photoluminescence intensities have linear and quadratic excitation power dependences, respectively, are identified. Under pulsed laser excitation, the zero time delay peak of second order correlation function corresponding to exciton emission is well suppressed, which is a clear evidence of single photon emission.
