We consider a deformed flat-band Hubbard model under a periodic boundary condition in arbitrary dimensions. We show that the ground state is only all-spin-up or -down state. We obtain upper and lower bounds of the one-magnon spin-wave energy with an arbitrary momentum. This dispersion relation is the same as that in the XXZ model in the certain parameter region. Therefore the spin wave has a finite energy gap. These results suggests the our model and the XXZ model.

The peculiar effect of electron correlation in multiband systems is illustrated for the recently proposed ferromagnetism in a Hubbard model having flat bands. Depsite the flatness of the band, an acoustic spin-wave mode with a finite stiffness exists along with optical modes below a Stoner gap. The relevant energy (gap and stiffness) transmutes from the Hubbard U in the weak-coupling limit to t (transfer integral) in the strong-coupling limit. This implies a stable itinerant ferromagnetism with finite band widths.
Abstract: We consider the ground states of the ferromagnetic XXZ chain with spin up boundary conditions in sectors with a fixed number of down spins. This forces the existence of a droplet of down spins in the system. We find the exact energy and the states that describe these droplets in the limit of an infinite number of down spins. We also prove that the droplet states, which were known to be separated by an energy gap from the ground state, are also separated by an energy gap from the remainder of the spectrum, i.e., they form an isolated band. We also prove the analogous results for finite chains with periodic boundary conditions and for the infinite chain.
Let L(G) be the line graph of a graph G=(V,E). The Hubbard model on L(G) has ferromagnetic ground states with a saturated spin if the interaction is repulsive (U>0) and if the number of electrons N satisfies N>or=M. M= mod E mod + mod V mod -1 if G is bipartite and M= mod E mod + mod V mod otherwise. The author shows that the ferromagnetic ground state is unique if N=M. Further he gives a sufficient condition for the existence of other ground states if N>M. The results are valid also for a multi-band Hubbard model on a bipartite graph. In the case of a periodic lattice, the results are related to the existence of a flat energy band.
We investigate the magnetization of the ground state of the one-dimensional flat-band Hubbard model as a function of the electron filling, using exact diagonalization techniques. Our calculation shows that the systems with odd n holes added to half-filling bands for a sufficiently large U (the on-site Coulomb repulsion energy) have a saturated ferromagnetic ground state, which is nondegenerate except for the trivial spin degeneracy. Dependences of the critical value of U on the size and on λ (a parameter of the system) are also investigated. For all values of λ, it is found that the ground state is a saturated ferromagnetic state if U is sufficiently large. Moreover, we find that the critical U for the saturated ferromagnetic ground state is almost independent on the system size, at least, for the system near quarter-filling. These facts indicate that even if the system size go to infinity, the ferromagnetic ground state can be exist for a finite U .
We investigate magnetic properties in the ground state of the one-dimensional flat-band Hubbard model in high electron filling. Until now, we found the new saturated ferromagnetism for odd numbers of holes, and its properties were investigated in detail. However, it was remained as a problem how we understand the complete alternation of magnetism between saturated ferromagnetism and singlet for odd and even numbers of holes, respectively. This alternation causes a difficulty when we consider the thermodynamic limit. In order to solve this difficulty, we investigate, at first, the change of the magnetization for systems with various boundary conditions, and we find that even for the even numbers of holes, the ground states are saturated ferromagnetic under the antiperiodic boundary condition. Furthermore, we explicitly investigate the spin-spin correlation functions < S z i S z j > to see the spin ordering. These calculations shows that all ground states in this filling region are the spiral state under a suitable boundary condition, and that the singlet states in these ground states, therefore, have a ferromagnetic order within, approximately, a half of the system size, although the total spin is still zero. From these results, we conclude that the properties in this region are by no means ill, and all ground states are essentially ferromagnetic in the sense that the spins in the singlet states are also ordered ferromagnetically if we take in the half of the system size.
We consider nearly-flat-band Hubbard models of a ferromagnet, that is the models that are weak perturbations of those flat-band Hubbard models whose ground state is ferromagnetic for any nonzero strength U of the Hubbard repulsion. In contrast to the flat-band case, in the nearly-flat-band case the ground state, being paramagnetic for U in a vicinity of zero, turns into a ferromagnetic one only if U exceeds some nonzero threshold value Uth. We address the question whether Uth of the considered models is in a physical range, therefore we attempt at obtaining possibly good estimates of the threshold value Uth. A rigorous method proposed by Tasaki is extended and the resulting estimates are compared with small-system, finite-size scaling results obtained for open- and periodic-boundary conditions. Contrary to suggestions in literature, we find the latter conditions particularly useful for our task.
