Abstract

Abstract The role of Klein factors is investigated for the bosonized Hamiltonian of the dimerized Hubbard model. Contrary to previous approaches we take into account their number changing property, i.e. we do not replace them by Majorana fermions. We show how to treat Klein factors in the framework of the self‐consistent harmonic approximation, both for finite systems and in the thermodynamic limit. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Bosonization of dimerized spinless-fermion and Hubbard chains

Carmen Luminiţa Mocanu

The low energy properties of different one-dimensional fermionic lattice models are investigated using the bosonization technique. We attach much importance to a proper consideration of the Klein factors which are neglected or inaccurately treated in the majority of the literature. In order to deal with the nonlinear terms, arising from the dimerization or similar scattering processes, we use the self-consistent harmonic approximation (SCHA), a variational method where the nonlinearities are replaced by a quadratic potential. We construct an extension of the SCHA in order to account for the existence of Klein factors in bosonized Hamiltonians. As prototypical models we consider one-dimensional dimerized spinless fermions and Hubbard models with periodic modulation of the hopping and of the chemical potential, respectively. In an attempt to describe more realistic systems we also consider a model where one-dimensional electrons are coupled to a three-dimensional conduction band via a local interaction. In order to see how the one-dimensional electron system is modified in the presence of the three-dimensional environment, we calculate the charge and the spin susceptibility, and analyze the collective excitations within RPA. We find that the spin excitations remain unaffected while in the charge channel, the collective modes of the one-dimensional and three-dimensional subsystems are coupled.

Dynamic Structure Factor for a Harmonic Oscillator and the Harmonic Oscillator Chain

August Hubert Wierling, Isao Sawada

Abstract The recurrance relation method is employed to determine the dynamic structure factor for the single harmonic oscillator and a linear chain of harmonic oscillators. Approximative schemes based on this approach are proposed. Comparison is made with exactly known results (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Dynamics of Hubbard Nano‐Clusters Following Strong Excitation

M. Bönitz, S. Hermanns, Karsten Balzer

Abstract The Hubbard model is a prototype for strongly correlated electrons in condensed matter, for molecules and fermions or bosons in optical lattices. While the equilibrium properties of these systems have been studied in detail, the excitation and relaxation dynamics following a perturbation of the system are only poorly explored. Here, we present results for the dynamics of electrons following nonlinear strong excitation that are based on a nonequilibrium Green functions approach. We focus on small systems—“Hubbard nano‐clusters”—that contain just a few particles where, in addition to the correlation effects, finite size effects and spatial inhomegeneity can be studied systematically. Finite-Size Bosonization and Self-Consistent Harmonic Approximation

C. Mocanu, M. Dzierzawa, P. Schwab +1 more

The self-consistent harmonic approximation is extended in order to account for the existence of Klein factors in bosonized Hamiltonians. This is important for the study of finite systems where Klein factors cannot be ignored a priori. As a test we apply the method to interacting spinless fermions with modulated hopping. We calculate the finite-size corrections to the energy gap and the Drude weight and compare our results with the exact solution for special values of the model parameters.

Magnetic and superconducting correlations in the two‐dimensional Hubbard model

W. Metzner, J. Reiss, D. Rohe

Abstract The interplay and competition of magnetic and superconducting correlations in the weakly interacting two‐dimensional Hubbard Model is investigated by means of the functional renormalization group. At zero temperature the flow of interactions in one‐loop approximation evolves into a strong coupling regime at low energy scales, signalling the possible onset of spontaneous symmetry breaking. This is further analyzed by a mean‐field treatment of the strong renormalized interactions which takes into account magnetic and superconducting order simultaneously. The effect of strong correlations on single‐particle properties in the normal phase is studied by calculating the flow of the self‐energy. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
