Triaxial Bright Solitons in Bose-Condensed Atomic Vapors

Abstract

The properties of triaxial bright solitons (TBSs) made of attractive Bose-Einstein condensed atoms under transverse anisotropic harmonic confinement are investigated by using a variational approach. We show that these metastable TBSs change their shape from cigar-like to disc-like by increasing the inter-atomic strength. Moreover, we find that the collective oscillations of a TBS strongly depend on the anisotropy parameter of the external potential. We calculate in detail the properties of TBS close to the collapse, which sets up at a critical value of the inter-atomic strength. This critical strength is maximal in the isotropic (axially symmetric) case and slightly reduces by increasing the anisotropy. Finally, we investigate the formation of multiple TBSs via modulational instability induced by a sudden change of the scattering length from positive to negative.

Condensate bright solitons under transverse confinement

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

We investigate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate bright solitons made of alkali-metal atoms with negative scattering length and under harmonic confinement in the transverse direction. Contrary to the one-dimensional (1D) case, the 3D bright soliton exists only below a critical attractive interaction that depends on the extent of confinement. Such a behavior is also found in multisoliton condensates with box boundary conditions. We obtain numerical and analytical estimates of the critical strength beyond which the solitons do not exist. By using an effective 1D nonpolynomial nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, which accurately takes into account the transverse dynamics of cigarlike condensates, we numerically simulate the dynamics of the ``soliton train'' reported in a recent experiment [Nature (London) 417, 150 (2002)]. Then, analyzing the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the bright soliton on a Gaussian barrier, we find that its interference in the tunneling region is strongly suppressed with respect to nonsolitonic case; moreover, the tunneling through a barrier breaks the shape invariance of the matter wave. Finally, we show that the collapse of the soliton is induced by the scattering on the barrier or by the collision with another matter wave when the density reaches a critical value, for which we derive an accurate analytical formula.

Formation of multi-solitons and vortex bright solitons in Bose-condensed alkali-metal atoms

Luca Salasnich

Formation of multi-solitons and vortex bright solitons in Bose-condensed alkali-metal atoms is analyzed by using the nonpolynomial Schordinger equation. A train of bright solitons is obtained from an axially homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate by a sudden change of the scattering length from repulsive to attractive. We derive an analytical expression for the number of bright solitons generated by using this mechanism. The formula generalizes a previous formula obtained with the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the second part we consider vortex bright solitons, namely cigar-shaped bright solitons with a nonzero angular quantum number $k$ along the axial direction. By using a variational approach we determine the shape of vortex bright solitons, showing that the critical number of atoms for the collapse of the vortex soliton increases with a larger $k$. Finally we calculate monopole and quadrupole collective oscillations of these vortex bright solitons.

Modulational Instability and Complex Dynamics of Confined Matter-Wave Solitons

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

We study the formation of bright solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate of 7Li atoms induced by a sudden change in the sign of the scattering length from positive to negative, as reported in a recent experiment [Nature (London) 417, 150 (2002)]]. The numerical simulations are performed by using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a dissipative three-body term. We show that a number of bright solitons is produced and this can be interpreted in terms of the modulational instability of the time-dependent macroscopic wave function of the Bose condensate. In particular, we derive a simple formula for the number of solitons that is in good agreement with the numerical results. We find that during the motion of the soliton train in an axial harmonic potential the number of solitonic peaks changes in time and the density of individual peaks shows an intermittent behavior.

Bright solitary waves and trapped solutions in Bose–Einstein condensates with attractive interactions

Nicholas G. Parker, Simon L. Cornish, Charles S. Adams +1 more

We analyse the static solutions of attractive Bose–Einstein condensates under transverse confinement, both with and without axial confinement. By full numerical solution of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation and variational methods we map out the condensate solutions, their energetic properties and their critical points for instability. With no axial confinement a bright solitary wave solution will tend to decay by dispersion unless the interaction energy is close to the critical value for collapse. In contrast, with axial confinement the only decay mechanism is collapse. The energetic stability of a bright solitary wave solution against decay increases with higher radial confinement. Finally, we consider the stability of dynamical states containing up to four solitons and find good agreement with recent experiments.

Dimensional reduction in Bose-Einstein-condensed alkali-metal vapors

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

We investigate the effects of dimensional reduction in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) induced by a strong harmonic confinement in the cylindric radial direction or in the cylindric axial direction. The former case corresponds to a transition from three dimensions (3D) to 1D in cigar-shaped BECs, while the latter case corresponds to a transition from 3D to 2D in disk-shaped BECs. We analyze the first sound velocity in axially homogeneous cigar-shaped BECs and in radially homogeneous disk-shaped BECs. We consider also the dimensional reduction in a BEC confined by a harmonic potential both in the radial direction and in the axial direction. By using a variational approach, we calculate monopole and quadrupole collective oscillations of the BEC. We find that the frequencies of these collective oscillations are related to the dimensionality and to the repulsive or attractive interatomic interaction.

Nearly-one-dimensional self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Cetoli, Boris A. Malomed +1 more

Within the framework of a mean-field description, we investigate atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, with attraction between atoms, under the action of a strong transverse confinement and periodic [optical-lattice (OL)] axial potential. Using a combination of the variational approximation, one-dimensional (1D) nonpolynomial Schr\"odinger equation, and direct numerical solutions of the underlying 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we show that the ground state of the condensate is a soliton belonging to the semi-infinite band gap of the periodic potential. The soliton may be confined to a single cell of the lattice or extended to several cells, depending on the effective self-attraction strength $g$ (which is proportional to the number of atoms bound in the soliton) and depth of the potential, ${V}_{0}$, the increase of ${V}_{0}$ leading to strong compression of the soliton. We demonstrate that the OL is an effective tool to control the soliton's shape. It is found that, due to the 3D character of the underlying setting, the ground-state soliton collapses at a critical value of the strength, $g={g}_{c}$, which gradually decreases with the increase of ${V}_{0}$; under typical experimental conditions, the corresponding maximum number of $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms in the soliton, ${N}_{\mathrm{max}}$, ranges between 8000 and 4000. Examples of stable multipeaked solitons are also found in the first finite band gap of the lattice spectrum. The respective critical value ${g}_{c}$ again slowly decreases with the increase of ${V}_{0}$, corresponding to ${N}_{\mathrm{max}}\ensuremath{\simeq}5000$.
