Abstract

We investigate the stability of dark solitons (DSs) in an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the magnetic parabolic trap and an optical lattice (OL). The analysis is based on both the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation and its tight-binding approximation counterpart (discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation). We find that DSs are subject to weak instabilities with an onset of instability mainly governed by the period and amplitude of the OL. The instability, if present, sets in at large times and it is characterized by quasiperiodic oscillations of the DS about the minimum of the parabolic trap.

Existence and stability of discrete intersite bright solitons in Bose Einstein condensates in parabolic trapped optical lattices

We consider intersite discrete bright solitons in one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in parabolic trapped optical lattice. Analytical and numerical calculations are performed to determine the existence and stability of bright solitons. Analysis is based on continuous Gross-Pitaevskii equation and discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. It is observed that the strength of external magnetic trap can change the stability of bright solitons. Stability windows of bright solitons are presented and stability approximations are derived using perturbation theory, with their numerical results.

Dark-in-bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions

P. G. Kevrekidis, D. J. Frantzeskakis, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

We demonstrate a possibility to generate localized states in effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with a negative scattering length in the form of a dark soliton in the presence of an optical lattice (OL) and/or a parabolic magnetic trap. We connect such structures with twisted localized modes (TLMs) that were previously found in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Families of these structures are found as functions of the OL strength, tightness of the magnetic trap and chemical potential, and their stability regions are identified. Stable bound states of two TLMs are also found. In the case when the TLMs are unstable, their evolution is investigated by means of direct simulations, demonstrating that they transform into large-amplitude fundamental solitons. An analytical approach is also developed, showing that two or several fundamental solitons, with the phase shift π between adjacent ones, may form stable bound states, with parameters quite close to those of the TLMs revealed by simulations. TLM structures are also found numerically and explained analytically in the case when the OL is absent, the condensate being confined only by the magnetic trap.

Effects of periodic optical lattice potential on dark solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate

Hong Li, Wang Dong-ning

This paper investigates the dynamics of dark solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate with a magnetic trap and an optical lattice (OL) trap, and analyses the effects of the periodic OL potential on the dynamics by applying the variational approach based on the renormalized integrals of motion. The results show that the dark soliton becomes only a standing-wave and free propagation of the dark soliton is not possible when the periodic length of the OL potential is approximately equal to the effective width of the dark soliton. When the periodic length is very small or very large, the effects of the OL potential on the dark soliton will be sharply reduced. Finally, the numerical results confirm these theoretical findings.

Controlling the motion of dark solitons by means of periodic potentials: Application to Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Georgios Theocharis, D. J. Frantzeskakis, R. Carretero-González +2 more

We demonstrate that the motion of dark solitons (DSs) can be controlled by means of periodic potentials. The mechanism is realized in terms of cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a harmonic magnetic potential, in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). In the case when the OL period is comparable to the width of the DS, we demonstrate that (a) a moving dark soliton can be captured, switching on the OL, and (b) a stationary DS can be dragged by a moving OL.

Quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates in nonlinear lattices

L Salasnich, Boris A. Malomed

We consider the three-dimensional (3D) mean-field model for the Bose–Einstein condensate, with a one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear lattice (NL), which periodically changes the sign of the nonlinearity along the axial direction, and the harmonic-oscillator trapping potential applied in the transverse plane. The lattice can be created as an optical or magnetic one, by means of available experimental techniques. The objective is to identify stable 3D solitons supported by the setting. Two methods are developed for this purpose: the variational approximation, formulated in the framework of the 3D Gross–Pitaevskii equation, and the 1D nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) in the axial direction, which allows one to predict the collapse in the framework of the 1D description. Results are summarized in the form of a stability region for the solitons in the plane of the NL strength and wavenumber. Both methods produce a similar form of the stability region. Unlike their counterparts supported by the NL in the 1D model with the cubic nonlinearity, kicked solitons of the NPSE cannot be set in motion, but the kick may help to stabilize them against the collapse, by causing the solitons to shed the excess norm. A dynamical effect specific to the NL is found in the form of freely propagating small-amplitude wave packets emitted by perturbed solitons.

Dynamical instability of a dark soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate perturbed by an optical lattice

N G Parker, Nick P. Proukakis, C F Barenghi +1 more

The motion of a dark soliton is investigated in a one-dimensional dilute Bose–Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic trap and an optical lattice. The harmonic trap induces a dynamical instability of the soliton, culminating in sound emission. The presence of the perturbing optical lattice enhances the instability, and in addition, dephases the emitted sound waves, thus preventing stabilization of the soliton by sound reabsorption. This instability can be probed experimentally by monitoring the soliton oscillations under various lattice configurations, which can be realized by changing the intensity and angle between the laser beams that form the lattice. For short enough times, such that the emitted sound does not reinteract with the soliton, the power emitted by the soliton is found to be proportional to the square of the local soliton acceleration, which is in turn proportional to the deformation of the soliton profile.
