Effects of periodic optical lattice potential on dark solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate

Abstract

This paper investigates the dynamics of dark solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate with a magnetic trap and an optical lattice (OL) trap, and analyses the effects of the periodic OL potential on the dynamics by applying the variational approach based on the renormalized integrals of motion. The results show that the dark soliton becomes only a standing-wave and free propagation of the dark soliton is not possible when the periodic length of the OL potential is approximately equal to the effective width of the dark soliton. When the periodic length is very small or very large, the effects of the OL potential on the dark soliton will be sharply reduced. Finally, the numerical results confirm these theoretical findings.

Controlling the motion of dark solitons by means of periodic potentials: Application to Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Georgios Theocharis, D. J. Frantzeskakis, R. Carretero-González +2 more

We demonstrate that the motion of dark solitons (DSs) can be controlled by means of periodic potentials. The mechanism is realized in terms of cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a harmonic magnetic potential, in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). In the case when the OL period is comparable to the width of the DS, we demonstrate that (a) a moving dark soliton can be captured, switching on the OL, and (b) a stationary DS can be dragged by a moving OL.

Stability of dark solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical lattice

P. G. Kevrekidis, R. Carretero-González, Georgios Theocharis +2 more

We investigate the stability of dark solitons (DSs) in an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the magnetic parabolic trap and an optical lattice (OL). The analysis is based on both the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation and its tight-binding approximation counterpart (discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation). We find that DSs are subject to weak instabilities with an onset of instability mainly governed by the period and amplitude of the OL. The instability, if present, sets in at large times and it is characterized by quasiperiodic oscillations of the DS about the minimum of the parabolic trap.

Dark Soliton of a Growing Bose–Einstein Condensate in an External Trap

Hong Li, Wang D N.

The dynamics of dark soliton in a growing Bose–Einstein condensate with an external magnetic trap are investigated by the variational approach based on the renormalized integrals of motion. The stationary states as physical solutions to the describing equation are obtained, and the evolution of the dark soliton is numerically simulated. The numerical results confirm the theoretical analysis and show that the dynamics depend strictly on the initial condition, the gain coefficient and the external potential.

Effects of localized impurity on a dark soliton in a Bose–Einstein condensate with an external magnetic trap

Hong Li, Wang Dong-ning

The dynamics of a dark soliton has been investigated in a Bose–Einstein condensate with an external magnetic trap, and the effects of localized impurity on the dynamics are discussed by the variational approach based on the renormalized integrals of motion. The reciprocal movement of the dark soliton is discussed by performing a standard linear analysis, and it is found that the effects of the localized impurity depend strictly on the positive or negative value of the impurity strength corresponding to the repulsive or attractive impurity. The numerical results confirm the theoretical analysis, and show that the effects also depend on the effective nonlinear coefficient and the harmonic frequency.

Statics, dynamics, and manipulations of bright matter-wave solitons in optical lattices

P. G. Kevrekidis, D. J. Frantzeskakis, R. Carretero-González +3 more

Motivated by the recent experimental achievements in the work with Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we consider bright matter-wave solitons, in the presence of a parabolic magnetic trap and a spatially periodic optical lattice (OL), in the attractive BEC. We examine pinned states of the soliton and their stability by means of perturbation theory. The analytical predictions are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulations. We then explore possibilities to use a time-modulated OL as a means of stopping and trapping a moving soliton, and of transferring an initially stationary soliton to a prescribed position by a moving OL. We also study the emission of radiation from the soliton moving across the combined magnetic trap and OL. We find that the soliton moves freely (without radiation) across a weak lattice, but suffers strong loss in deeper OLs.

Vortices in a Bose–Einstein condensate confined by an optical lattice

P G Kevrekidis, R Carretero-Gonz lez, Georgios Theocharis +2 more

We investigate the dynamics of vortices in repulsive Bose–Einstein condensates in the presence of an optical lattice (OL) and a parabolic magnetic trap. The dynamics is sensitive to the phase of the OL potential relative to the magnetic trap, and depends less on the OL strength. For the cosinusoidal OL potential, a local minimum is generated at the trap’s centre, creating a stable equilibrium for the vortex, while in the case of the sinusoidal potential, the vortex is expelled from the centre, demonstrating spiral motion. Cases where the vortex is created far from the trap’s centre are also studied, revealing slow outward-spiralling drift. Numerical results are explained in an analytical form by means of a variational approximation. Finally, motivated by a discrete model (which is tantamount to the case of the strong OL lattice), we present a novel type of vortex consisting of two pairs of antiphase solitons.
