Non-universal critical behaviour of two-dimensional Ising systems

Abstract

Two conditions are derived for Ising models to show non-universal critical behaviour, namely, conditions concerning (i) logarithmic singularity of the specific heat and (ii) degeneracy of the ground state. These conditions are satisfied by the eight-vertex model, the Ashkin-Teller model, some Ising models with short- or long-range interactions and even Ising systems without the translational or rotational invariance.

Universality and non-universality in the Ashkin-Teller model

Alessandro Giuliani

The Ashkin-Teller model can be formulated as a pair of 2D Ising models, interacting via a four-spin interaction. I consider the case of weak anisotropy (slight a-symmetry between the two Ising layers) and weak coupling. I show that the system admits two critical temperatures whose difference varies continuously with the strength of the coupling, scaling with an anomalous exponent as one let the a-symmetry parameter go to zero. The specific heat diverges logarithmically at the critical points (as for Ising) but the constant in front of the logarithm is renormalized by an anomalous critical exponent. The logarithmic divergence of the specific heat dominates only in an exponentially small interval around the critical temperatures and outside it is modified into an anomalous power law behaviour. The proof is based on an exact mapping of Ashkin-Teller into a model of (1+1)D interacting fermions and on the implementation of constructive Renormalization group methods on the fermionic system. This PhD thesis includes: (1) a review of the exact solution of 2D Ising in terms of Grassmann functional integrals; (2) a review of the Grassmann representation for a class of interacting Ising models, including Ashkin-Teller and the 8 vertex model; (3) a detailed discussion of the multiscale analysis of the Ashkin-Teller model, based on fermionic Renormalization Group methods, including the study of the flow of the effective coupling constants (in particular a proof of vanishing of the beta function for this and similar Luttinger-like models, based on modified approximate Ward identities, is included). This thesis is based on joint work with V. Mastropietro.

Note on universality and the eight-vertex model

K Jungling, Gustav M. Obermair

It is shown that the critical behaviour of the general eight-vertex model is equal to that of an Ising model with only two-spin interactions between first, second and third neighbours. The critical exponents of the latter must therefore, in general, depend on the ratios of coupling constants as those of Baxter's eight-vertex model have been shown to do, in contrast to universality so far assumed to hold for all short-range two-spin interactions.

Ising-like behaviour of the Ashkin-Teller model

We show that the Ashkin-Teller model has Ising critical exponents, in the region where the model has two phase transitions. The proof follows from mapping the ground state of the time-continuous Ashkin-Teller Hamiltonian onto that of the Ising chain in a transverse field.

Two-layered Ising model with short-range two-spin interactions showing the critical behaviour of the Ashkin-Teller model

K Jungling

A two-layered Ising model is presented which maps to the Ashkin-Teller (AT) model (1943) for certain ratios of the two-spin couplings. Thus the model is able to exhibit the same critical exponents as the AT model, which are in general different from the usual Ising exponents; even continuous dependence of the critical exponents on the energy parameters is to be expected.

Non-universality in the Ising model with nearest and next-nearest neighbour interactions

Michael N. Barber

The critical behaviour of the Ising model on the square lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interactions (J) and anti-ferromagnetic next-nearest neighbour interactions (J') is discussed for small lambda =J/ mod J' mod . The singular part of the free energy is calculated to second order in lambda by perturbation theory. Near the critical temperature of the unperturbed system (J=0), this expansion is found to have a form which may be exponentiated yielding, for non-zero lambda , a non-universal critical line along which the exponents vary continuously with lambda . For small lambda , the specific heat exponent, alpha = alpha 1 lambda 2 +O( lambda 2 ) with alpha 1 approximately=1.5.
