Phase separation of atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in an optical lattice

Abstract

We study a two-dimensional atomic mixture of bosons and fermions cooled into their quantum degenerate states and subject to an optical lattice. The optical lattice provides van Hove singularities in the fermionic density of states. We find that these van Hove singularities produce new and interesting features for the transition towards phase separation: an arbitrary weak interaction between the bosons and the fermions is sufficient to drive the phase separation at low temperatures. The phase-separated state turns stable for attractive and repulsive interactions between the bosons and fermions and can be cast into the standard form of a ``liquid--gas'' transition.

Supersolid versus Phase Separation in Atomic Bose-Fermi Mixtures

Hans Peter Büchler, G. Blatter

We show that a two-dimensional atomic mixture of bosons and fermions cooled into their quantum degenerate states and subject to an optical lattice develops a supersolid phase characterized by the simultaneous presence of a nontrivial crystalline order and phase order. This transition is in competition with phase separation. We determine the phase diagram of the system and propose an experiment allowing for the observation of the supersolid phase.

Atomic Bose-Fermi Mixtures in an Optical Lattice

Maciej Lewenstein, Luis Santos, M. A. Baranov +1 more

A mixture of ultracold bosons and fermions placed in an optical lattice constitutes a novel kind of quantum gas, and leads to phenomena, which so far has been discussed neither in atomic physics, nor in condensed matter physics. We discuss the phase diagram at low temperatures, and in the limit of strong atom-atom interactions, and predict the existence of quantum phases that involve pairing of fermions with one or more bosons, or, respectively, bosonic holes. The resulting composite fermions may form, depending on the system parameters, a normal Fermi liquid, a density wave, a superfluid liquid, or an insulator with fermionic domains. We discuss the feasibility for observing such phases in current experiments.

Zero-temperature phase diagram of Bose-Fermi gaseous mixtures in optical lattices

T. P. Polak, T. K. Kopeć

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a mixture of bosonic and fermionic cold atoms confined on two- and three-dimensional optical lattices. The coupling between bosonic fluctuations and fermionic atoms can be attractive or repulsive and has similarities with electron-phonon coupling in crystals. We investigate behavior of the mixtures in the limit, where the Bogoliubov sound velocity that dictates bosonic dynamics is comparable to the Fermi velocity, hence the retardation effects are an important part of the physics. The dynamic Lindhard response function of the fermionic density to changes in the bosonic number of particles above some critical frequency can alter the sign, and consequently the interspecies interaction between particles becomes repulsive in contrast to the static limit (instantaneous and always attractive). Considering the above, we show that the structure of the phase diagrams crucially depends on the difference in masses of the bosons and fermions. We discuss the situations where integrating out the fermionic field provides an additional interaction that can decrease or increase bosonic coherence.

Quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures on 1-D optical lattices

Pinaki Sengupta, Leonid P. Pryadko

We combine model mapping, exact spectral bounds, and a quantum Monte Carlo method to study the ground state phases of a mixture of ultracold bosons and spin-polarized fermions in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The exact boundary of the boson-demixing transition is obtained from the Bethe Ansatz solution of the standard Hubbard model. We prove that along a symmetry plane in the parameter space, the boson-fermion mixed phase is stable at all densities. This phase is a two-component Luttinger liquid for weak couplings or for incommensurate total density, otherwise it has a charge gap but retains a gapless mode of mixture composition fluctuations. The static density correlations are studied in these two limits and shown to have markedly different features.

Quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures on one-dimensional optical lattices

Pinaki Sengupta, Leonid P. Pryadko

We study numerically and analytically the phases of a mixture of ultracold bosons and spin-polarized fermions in a one-dimensional lattice. In particular, along a symmetry plane in the parameter space, we obtain the exact boundary of the boson-demixing transition from the Bethe ansatz solution of the standard Hubbard model. For a region of parameter space, we prove the existence of boson-fermion mixed phase at all densities. This phase is a two-component Luttinger liquid for weak couplings or for incommensurate total density, otherwise it has a charge gap but retains a gapless mode of mixture composition fluctuations. We show that the static density correlations in these two regimes are markedly different.
