Z3 quantum criticality in a spin- 12 chain model

Abstract

The stability of the magnetization $m=1/3$ plateau phase of the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain with competing interactions is investigated upon switching on a staggered transverse magnetic field. Within a bosonization approach, it is shown that the low-energy properties of the model are described by an effective two-dimensional $\mathrm{XY}$ model in a threefold symmetry-breaking field. A phase transition in the three-state Potts universality class is expected separating the $m=1/3$ plateau phase to a phase where the spins are polarized along the staggered magnetic field. The ${Z}_{3}$ critical properties of the transition are determined within the bosonization approach.

Quantum vs Classical Magnetization Plateaus of S=1/2 Frustrated Heisenberg Chains

Kazuo Hida, Ian K. Affleck

The competition between quantum and classical magnetization plateaus of S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chains with modified exchange couplings is investigated. The conventional S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chains is known to exhibit a 3-fold degenerate udu-type classical plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization accompanied by the spontaneous Z_3 translational symmetry breakdown. The stability of this plateau phase against period 3 exchange modulation which favors the 00u-type quantum plateau state (00= singlet dimer) is studied by bosonization, renormalization group and numerical diagonalization methods. The ground state phase diagram and the spin configuration in each phase are numerically determined. The translationally invariant Valence Bond Solid-type model with 4-spin and third neighbor interactions, which has the exact 00u-type quantum plateau state, is also presented. The phase transition to the classical udu-type ground state is also observed by varying the strength of 4-spin and third neighbor interactions. The relation between these two types of models with quantum plateau states is discussed.

Magnetization Plateau of theS= 1/2 Frustrated Heisenberg Chain with Period 3 Parity Invariant Exchange Modulation

Kazuo Hida, Ian K. Affleck

The magnetization plateau of the S = 1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chain with period 3 parity invariant exchange modulation is investigated by the bosonization and numerical exact diagonalization method. The ground state phase diagram at 1/3 of the saturated magnetization is obtained. Among three degenerate ↑↑↓-type plateau states in the uniform chain, two of them (↓↑↑↓↑↑⋅⋅⋅ and ↑↓↑↑↓↑⋅⋅⋅) turned out to be robust against the period 3 exchange modulation which favors the phase up to a critical value of the modulation amplitude ( = singlet dimer) resulting in the Z2 symmetry broken phase. Another ↑↑↓-type state with ↑↑↓↑↑↓⋅⋅⋅ configuration is stabilized for period 3 modulation with opposite sign. The transition between the -phase and Z2-broken phase is the Ising transition and that between the ↑↑↓↑↑↓⋅⋅⋅ -phase and Z2 broken phase is the first order transition. The spin configuration in each phase is numerically verified by applying the local symmetry breaking field.

Quantum phase transition in the Z3 Kitaev-Potts model

Razieh Mohseninia, Saeed S. Jahromi, Laleh Memarzadeh +1 more

The stability of the topological order phase induced by the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ Kitaev model, which is a candidate for fault-tolerant quantum computation, against the local order phase induced by the three-state Potts model is studied. We show that the low-energy sector of the Kitaev-Potts model is mapped to the Potts model in the presence of transverse magnetic field. Our study relies on two high-order series expansions based on continuous unitary transformations in the limits of small and large Potts couplings as well as mean-field approximation. Our analysis reveals that the topological phase of the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ Kitaev model breaks down to the Potts model through a first-order phase transition. We capture the phase transition by analysis of the ground-state energy, one-quasiparticle gap, and geometric measure of entanglement.

Magnetization plateau in the spin ladder with alternating rung exchange

G. I. Japaridze, E Pogosyan

We have studied the ground state phase diagram of a spin ladder with alternating rung exchange $J^{n}_{\perp} = J_{\perp}[1 + (-1)^{n} δ]$ in a magnetic filed, in the limit where the rung coupling is dominant. In this limit the model is mapped onto an $XXZ$ Heisenberg chain in a uniform and staggered longitudinal magnetic fields, where the amplitude of the staggered field is $\sim δ$. We have shown that the magnetization curve of the system exhibits a plateau at magnetization equal to the half of the saturation value. The width of a plateau scales as $δ^ν$, where $ν=4/5$ in the case of ladder with isotropic antiferromagnetic legs and $ν=2$ in the case of ladder with isotropic ferromagnetic legs. We have calculated four critical fields ($H^{\pm}_{c1}$ and $H^{\pm}_{c2}$) corresponding to transitions between different magnetic phases of the system. We have shown that these transitions belong to the universality class of the commensurate-incommensurate transition.

Magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ model in the presence of longitudinal, transverse and transverse staggered magnetic fields: effect of inhomogeneity property

Hamid Arian Zad, Moones Sabeti, Azam Zoshki

Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin=1/2 chain under both homogeneous and inhomogeneous magnetic fields are theoretically studied at finite low temperature. To this end, we rigorously study the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the model in the vicinity of three different magnetic fields including longitudinal, transverse and transverse staggered magnetic fields. The thermodynamic parameters of the model are investigated under two conditions separately: I) when the model is putted in the presence of homogeneous magnetic fields; II) when a finite inhomogeneity is considered for all applied magnetic fields in the Hamiltonian. We show that at low temperature, independent of the chain size, the magnetization curve versus longitudinal field has some plateaus, which convert to their counterpart quasi-plateaus when the transverse magnetic field increases. Moreover, the influence of the transverse and staggered transverse magnetic fields, and their corresponding inhomogeneities on the magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat is reported in detail. We find that the inhomogeneity has a substantial effect on the thermodynamic parameters of the model under consideration.

Low-energy properties of anisotropic two-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg models in staggered magnetic fields

Bin Xi, Shijie Hu, Jize Zhao +3 more

We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions. To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in one dimension. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to 2D physics.
