Charge dynamics in the Mott insulating phase of the ionic Hubbard model

Abstract

I extend to charge and bond operators the transformation that maps the ionic Hubbard model at half filling onto an effective spin Hamiltonian. Using the transformed operators I calculate the amplitude of the charge-density wave in different dimensions D. In one dimension, the charge-charge correlations at large distance d decay as ${d}^{\ensuremath{-}3}{\mathrm{ln}}^{\ensuremath{-}3/2}d,$ in spite of the finite charge gap, due to remaining charge-spin coupling. Bond-bond correlations decay as $(\ensuremath{-}{1)}^{d}{d}^{\ensuremath{-}1}{\mathrm{ln}}^{\ensuremath{-}3/2}d$ as in the usual Hubbard model.

Bond-charge interaction in the extended Hubbard chain

Daisy M. Luz, Raimundo R. dos Santos

We study the effects of a bond-charge interaction (or correlated hopping) on the properties of the extended [i.e., with both on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsions] Hubbard model in one dimension at half-filling. Energy gaps and correlation functions are calculated by Lanczos diagonalization on finite systems. We find that, irrespective of the sign of the bond-charge interaction, X, the charge-density-wave (CDW) state is more robust than the spin-density-wave (SDW) state. A small bond-charge interaction term is enough to make the differences between the CDW and SDW correlation functions much less dramatic than when X=0. For X=t and fixed V2t (t is the uncorrelated hopping integral), there is an intermediate phase between a charge ordered phase and a phase corresponding to singly occupied sites, the nature of which we clarify: it is characterized by a succession of critical points, each of which corresponds to a different density of doubly occupied sites. We also find an unusual slowly decaying staggered spin-density correlation function, which is suggestive of some degree of ordering. No enhancement of pairing correlations was found for any X in the range examined. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Nature of the insulating phases in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model

A. P. Kampf, Michael Sekania, G. I. Japaridze +1 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional 'ionic' Hubbard model with an alternating periodic potential at half-filling by numerical diagonalization of finite systems with the Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group methods. We identify an insulator–insulator phase transition from a band to a correlated insulator with simultaneous charge and bond-charge order. The transition point is characterized by the vanishing of the optical excitation gap while simultaneously the charge and spin gaps remain finite and equal. Indications for a possible second transition into a Mott-insulator phase are discussed.

Dimerized phase of ionic Hubbard models

Armando A. Aligia, Cristian D. Batista

We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the ionic Hubbard model at half filling, extended to include nearest-neighbor repulsion. Using a spin-particle transformation, the effective model is mapped onto simple spin-1 models in two particular cases. Using another spin-particle transformation, a slightly modified model is mapped into an SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model whose exact ground state is known to be spontaneously dimerized. From the effective models several properties of the dimerized phase are discussed, like ferroelectricity and fractional charge excitations. Using bosonization and recent developments in the theory of macroscopic polarization, we show that the polarization is proportional to the charge of the elementary excitations.

Electronic phase transitions in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model

L. Craco, P. Lombardo, R. Hayn +2 more

A detailed study of electronic phase transitions in the ionic Hubbard model at half filling is presented. Within the dynamical mean field approximation a series of transitions from the band insulator via a metallic state to a Mott--Hubbard insulating phase is found at intermediate values of the one-body potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ with increasing the Coulomb interaction $U$. We obtain a critical region in which the metallic phase disappears and a coexistence phase between the band and the Mott insulating state sets in. Our results are consistent with those obtained at low dimensions, thus they provide a concrete description for the charge degrees of freedom of the ionic Hubbard model.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Akira Furusaki

We revisit the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. In the first half of the paper, using the weak-coupling renormalization-group approach $(g$-ology) including second-order corrections to the coupling constants, we show that bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for $U\ensuremath{\approx}2V$ in between charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons disfavors the BCDW state and leads to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line. In the second half of the paper, we investigate the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with either additional staggered site potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ or bond alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}.$ Although the alternating site potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ strongly favors the CDW state (that is, a band insulator), the BCDW state is not destroyed completely and occupies a finite region in the phase diagram. Our result is a natural generalization of the work by Fabrizio, Gogolin, and Nersesyan [Phys. Rev. Lett. $83,$ 2014 (1999)], who predicted the existence of a spontaneously dimerized insulating state between a band insulator and a Mott insulator in the phase diagram of the ionic Hubbard model. The bond alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}$ destroys the SDW state and changes it into the BCDW state (or Peierls insulating state). As a result the phase diagram of the model with $\ensuremath{\delta}$ contains only a single critical line separating the Peierls insulator phase and the CDW phase. The addition of $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ or $\ensuremath{\delta}$ changes the universality class of the CDW-BCDW transition from the Gaussian transition into the Ising transition.

Computational Studies of Correlated Electrons in One-Dimension

Pinaki Sengupta

"We have studied the extended Hubbard and the Peierls-extended Hubbard models in one dimension using primarily computational methods. We discuss the derivation of the models and the computational methods used to study them, focusing primarily on our extensions over existing numerical methods. In particular, we present the construction of ""operator-loop"" updates for spin-1/2 fermions and the inclusion of electron-phonon interactions in the Stochastic Series Expansion Quantum Monte Carlo method and the use of Quantum Parallel Tempering to improve the quality of the numerical data. For the extended Hubbard model at half-filling, we have confirmed the existence of a recently reported bond-order wave phase for the ground state in a small region of parameter space between the well-known charge- and spin-density wave phases. We have studied in detail the nature of the associated quantum phase transitions between all the phases. Upon doping away from half-filling, the doubly-degenerate, spin and charge gapped long-range-ordered ground states of the model are shown to evolve to a Luther-Emery liquid with no charge gap but a finite spin gap. For the Peierls-extended Hubbard model, which includes both electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions, we have studied the dimerization transition of the half-filled system in the presence of fully quantum mechanical phonons. We show that the transition to a dimerized state occurs only when the electron-phonon coupling exceeds a finite critical value that depends on the bare phonon frequency. This is in contrast to previous studies in similar models with adiabatic phonons that had predicted a dimerized state for arbitrarily small values of the electron-phonon coupling."
