Bond-charge interaction in the extended Hubbard chain

Abstract

We study the effects of a bond-charge interaction (or correlated hopping) on the properties of the extended [i.e., with both on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsions] Hubbard model in one dimension at half-filling. Energy gaps and correlation functions are calculated by Lanczos diagonalization on finite systems. We find that, irrespective of the sign of the bond-charge interaction, X, the charge-density-wave (CDW) state is more robust than the spin-density-wave (SDW) state. A small bond-charge interaction term is enough to make the differences between the CDW and SDW correlation functions much less dramatic than when X=0. For X=t and fixed V2t (t is the uncorrelated hopping integral), there is an intermediate phase between a charge ordered phase and a phase corresponding to singly occupied sites, the nature of which we clarify: it is characterized by a succession of critical points, each of which corresponds to a different density of doubly occupied sites. We also find an unusual slowly decaying staggered spin-density correlation function, which is suggestive of some degree of ordering. No enhancement of pairing correlations was found for any X in the range examined. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping interaction

G. I. Japaridze, Sarkar, S.

A one-dimensional model of interacting electrons with on-site U, nearest- neighbor V, and pair-hopping interaction W is studied at half-filling using the continuum limit field theory approach. The ground state phase diagram is obtained for a wide range of coupling constants. In addition to the insulating spin-density wave (SDW) and charge-density wave (CDW) phases for large U and V, respectively, we identify a bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase W < 0, \U - 2V\ < \2W\ and a bond-spin-density-wave (BSDW) for W > 0, \U - 2V\ < W. The possibility of bond-located ordering results from the site-off-diagonal nature of the pair-hopping term and is a special feature of the half-filled band case. The BCDW phase corresponding to an enhanced Peierls instability in the system. The BdSDW is an unconventional insulating magnetic phase, characterized by a gapless spin excitation spectrum and a staggered magnetization located on bonds between sites. The general ground state phase diagram including insulating, metallic, and superconducting phases is discussed. A transition to the eta(pi) -superconducting phase at \U - 2V\ much less than 2t less than or equal to W is briefly discussed.

Bond-order-wave phase and quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Pinaki Sengupta, Anders W. Sandvik, David K Campbell

We use a stochastic series-expansion quantum Monte Carlo method to study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling for small to intermediate values of the on-site U and nearest-neighbor V repulsions. We confirm the existence of a novel, long-range-ordered bond-order-wave (BOW) phase recently predicted by Nakamura [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 68, 3123 (1999)] in a small region of the parameter space between the familiar charge-density-wave (CDW) state for $V\ensuremath{\gtrsim}U/2$ and the state with dominant spin-density-wave (SDW) fluctuations for $V\ensuremath{\lesssim}U/2.$ We discuss the nature of the transitions among these states and evaluate some of the critical exponents. Further, we determine accurately the position of the multicritical point, ${(U}_{m}{,V}_{m})=(4.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1,2.51\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04)$ (in energy units where the hopping integral is normalized to unity), above which the two continuous SDW-BOW-CDW transitions are replaced by one discontinuous (first-order) direct SDW-CDW transition. We also discuss the evolution of the CDW and BOW states upon hole doping. We find that in both cases the ground state is a Luther-Emery liquid, i.e., the spin gap remains but the charge gap existing at half-filling is immediately closed upon doping. The charge and bond-order correlations decay with distance r as ${r}^{\ensuremath{-}{K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}},$ where ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ is approximately $0.5$ for the parameters we have considered. We also discuss advantages of using parallel tempering (or exchange Monte Carlo)---an extended ensemble method that we here combine with quantum Monte Carlo---in studies of quantum phase transitions.

Phase diagram of the extended Hubbard chain with charge-dipole interactions

M. E. Torio, Armando A. Aligia, K. Hallberg +1 more

We consider a modified extended Hubbard model (EHM) which, in addition to the on-site repulsion U and nearest-neighbor repulsion V, includes polarization effects in second-order perturbation theory. The model is equivalent to an EHM with renormalized U plus a next-nearest-neighbor repulsion term. Using a method based on topological quantum numbers (charge and spin Berry phases), we generalize to finite hopping t the quantum phase diagram in one dimension constructed by van den Brink et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 4658 (1995)]. At hopping $t=0$ there are two charge density-wave phases, one spin density-wave phase, and one intermediate phase with charge and spin ordering, depending on the parameter values. At $t\ensuremath{\ne}0$ the nature of each phase is confirmed by studying correlation functions. However, in addition to the strong-coupling phases, a small region with bond ordering appears. The region occupied by the intermediate phase first increases and then decreases with increasing t, until it finally disappears for t of the order but larger than U. For small t, the topological transitions agree with the results of second-order perturbation theory.

Ground-state phase diagram of an extended Hubbard chain with correlated hopping at half-filling

Liliana Arrachea, Eduardo R. Gagliano, Armando A. Aligia

We consider a generalized Hubbard model with on-site interaction U, nearest-neighbor repulsion V, and nearest-neighbor hopping for spin \ensuremath{\sigma}, which depends on the sum of particles ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}\ensuremath{-}|\mathrm{A}\mathrm{m}}$ with opposite spin in the two sites involved. The hopping matrix elements are denoted by ${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$,${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$,${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$ for ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}\ensuremath{-}|\mathrm{A}\mathrm{m}}$=0,1,2, respectively. For 0${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$=${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$, we have determined the regions of parameters for which the ground-state (GS) of the one-dimensional system is a charge-density wave (CDW), a spin-density wave (SDW), or a metal (M), using Hartree-Fock, exact diagonalization of finite chains and quantum Monte Carlo. The results agree qualitatively with the exactly solvable limit of ${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$=0. For 0${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$=${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$, the GS is a M for sufficiently low values of U and V. In contrast, when ${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AA}}$+${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{BB}}$-${2\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{AB}}$=0, our results suggest that the GS is either a CDW or a SDW, with the boundary between them lying near the line U=2V.

Phase Diagram of the One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model at Half Filling

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Akira Furusaki

We reexamine the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions. We calculate second-order corrections to coupling constants in the weak-coupling renormalization-group approach ( g-ology) to show that the bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for weak couplings in between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons destabilizes the BCDW state and gives rise to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line.

Phase diagram of an extended Hubbard model with correlated hopping at half filling

Armando A. Aligia, Liliana Arrachea, Eduardo R. Gagliano

We study a generalized Hubbard model with on-site interaction U, nearest-neighbor repulsion V, and general correlated hopping under the condition that the number of doubly occupied sites is conserved. We find the exact ground state (GS) in arbitrary dimension in two wide regions of parameters. In one of them the GS is a Mott insulator (MI) and in the other it is a charge-density wave (CDW). The boundary of the MI and a large part of that of the CDW are determined exactly for relevant lattices. We study numerically the effect of relaxing the above-mentioned condition.
