Stability of metallic stripes in the one-band extended Hubbard model

Abstract

Based on an unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation (GA) we investigate static stripe configurations with regard to the orientation and periodicity in an extended one-band Hubbard model. A negative ratio between next-nearest-neighbor and nearest-neighbor hoppings, ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t,$ as appropriate for cuprates, favors partially filled (metallic) stripes for both vertical and diagonal configurations. At around optimal doping diagonal stripes and site centered (SC) and bond centered (BC) vertical stripes become degenerate suggesting strong lateral and orientational fluctuations. We find that within the GA the resulting phase diagram is in agreement with experiment whereas it is not in the Hartree-Fock approximation due to a strong overestimation of the stripe filling. Results are in agreement with previous calculations within the three-band Hubbard model but with the role of SC and BC stripes interchanged.

Dynamics of Metallic Stripes in Cuprates

J. Lorenzana, G. Seibold

We study the dynamics of metallic vertical stripes in cuprates within the three-band Hubbard model based on a recently developed time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. As doping increases, the optical conductivity shows transfer of spectral weight from the charge-transfer band towards (i) an incoherent band centered at 1.3 eV, (ii) a Drude peak, due mainly to motion along the stripe, and (iii) a low-energy collective mode which softens with doping and merges with (ii) at optimum doping in good agreement with experiment. The softening is related to the quasidegeneracy between Cu-centered and O-centered mean-field stripe solutions close to optimal doping.

Variational Monte Carlo study of stripes as a function of doping in the t−t′ Hubbard model

Antonio Lechiara, Vito Marino, Luca F. Tocchio

') neighbor hoppings. Our work investigates the consequences of increasing hole doping on the instauration of stripes and the behavior of the superconducting order parameter, with a discussion on how the two phenomena affect each other. We consider two different values of the next-nearest neighbor hopping parameter, that are appropriate for describing cuprate superconductors. We observe that stripes are the optimal state in a wide doping range; the stripe wavelength reduces at increasing doping, until stripes melt into a uniform state for large values of doping. Superconducting pair-pair correlations, indicating the presence of superconductivity, are always suppressed in the presence of stripes. Our results suggest that the phase diagram for the single-band Hubbard model is dominated by stripes, with superconductivity being possible only in a narrow doping range between striped states and a nonsuperconducting metal.

Stripe correlations in the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model

Seher Karakuzu, Andy Tanjaroon Ly, Peizhi Mai +3 more

Abstract Several state-of-the-art numerical methods have observed static or fluctuating spin and charge stripes in doped two-dimensional Hubbard models, suggesting that these orders play a significant role in shaping the cuprate phase diagram. Many experiments, however, also indicate that the cuprates have strong electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, and it is unclear how this interaction influences stripe correlations. We study static and fluctuating stripe orders in the doped single-band Hubbard-Holstein model using zero temperature variational Monte Carlo and finite temperature determinant quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the lattice couples more strongly with the charge component of the stripes, leading to an enhancement or suppression of stripe correlations, depending on model parameters like the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $${t}^{{\prime} }$$ t′ or phonon energy Ω. Our results help elucidate how thee-ph interaction can tip the delicate balance between stripe and superconducting correlations in the Hubbard-Holstein model with implications for our understanding of the high-Tccuprates.

Competition between Vertical and Diagonal Stripes in the Hartree-Fock Approximation

Marcin Raczkowski

Using the Hartree‐Fock approximation we analyze the properties and stability of the filled (one doped hole per stripe site) vertical stripes (VS) and diagonal stripes (DS), found in the two‐dimensional Hubbard model at two representative doping levels x = 1/8 and x = 1/6, by varying the ratio of the on‐site Coulomb repulsion U to the hopping element t. In the weak coupling regime of U ∼ 3.5t the stability of VS is best explained by the solitonic mechanism which leads to the kinetic energy gain due to the hopping perpendicular to the stripes, while DS have a lower potential energy which explains their stability in the regime of large U. The results obtained beyond the Hubbard model are shortly reviewed as well.

Stripe Orders in the Extended Hubbard Model

Taira Kato, Masaru Kato

We study stripe orders of charge and spin density waves in the extended Hubbard model with the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion V within the mean field approximation. We obtain V vs. T(temperature) phase diagram for the on-site Coulomb interaction U/t=8.0 and the filling n=0.8, here t is a nearest-neighbor transfer energy. Our result shows that the diagonal stripe spin density wave state (SDW) is stable for small V, but for large V the most stable state changes to a charge density wave-antiferromagnetic (CDW-AF) state. Especially we find at low temperature and for a certain range of value of V, a vertical stripe CDW-AF state becomes stable.

Stripes in the extended $t-t^\prime$ Hubbard model: A Variational Monte Carlo analysis

Vito Marino, Federico Becca, Luca F. Tocchio

By using variational quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the instauration of stripes (i.e., charge and spin inhomogeneities) in the Hubbard model on the square lattice at hole doping \delta=1/8 δ = 1 / 8 , with both nearest- ( t t ) and next-nearest-neighbor hopping ( t^\prime t ′ ). Stripes with different wavelengths \lambda λ (denoting the periodicity of the charge inhomogeneity) and character (bond- or site-centered) are stabilized for sufficiently large values of the electron-electron interaction U/t U / t . The general trend is that \lambda λ increases going from negative to positive values of t^\prime/t t ′ / t and decreases by increasing U/t U / t . In particular, the \lambda=8 λ = 8 stripe obtained for t^\prime=0 t ′ = 0 and U/t=8 U / t = 8 [L.F. Tocchio, A. Montorsi, and F. Becca, SciPost Phys. 21 (2019)] shrinks to \lambda=6 λ = 6 for U/t\gtrsim 10 U / t ≳ 10 . For t^\prime/t<0 t ′ / t < 0 , the stripe with \lambda=5 λ = 5 </
