Abstract

By using variational quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the instauration of stripes (i.e., charge and spin inhomogeneities) in the Hubbard model on the square lattice at hole doping \delta=1/8 δ = 1 / 8 , with both nearest- ( t t ) and next-nearest-neighbor hopping ( t^\prime t ′ ). Stripes with different wavelengths \lambda λ (denoting the periodicity of the charge inhomogeneity) and character (bond- or site-centered) are stabilized for sufficiently large values of the electron-electron interaction U/t U / t . The general trend is that \lambda λ increases going from negative to positive values of t^\prime/t t ′ / t and decreases by increasing U/t U / t . In particular, the \lambda=8 λ = 8 stripe obtained for t^\prime=0 t ′ = 0 and U/t=8 U / t = 8 [L.F. Tocchio, A. Montorsi, and F. Becca, SciPost Phys. 21 (2019)] shrinks to \lambda=6 λ = 6 for U/t\gtrsim 10 U / t ≳ 10 . For t^\prime/t<0 t ′ / t < 0 , the stripe with \lambda=5 λ = 5 </

Variational Monte Carlo study of stripes as a function of doping in the t−t′ Hubbard model

') neighbor hoppings. Our work investigates the consequences of increasing hole doping on the instauration of stripes and the behavior of the superconducting order parameter, with a discussion on how the two phenomena affect each other. We consider two different values of the next-nearest neighbor hopping parameter, that are appropriate for describing cuprate superconductors. We observe that stripes are the optimal state in a wide doping range; the stripe wavelength reduces at increasing doping, until stripes melt into a uniform state for large values of doping. Superconducting pair-pair correlations, indicating the presence of superconductivity, are always suppressed in the presence of stripes. Our results suggest that the phase diagram for the single-band Hubbard model is dominated by stripes, with superconductivity being possible only in a narrow doping range between striped states and a nonsuperconducting metal.

Inhomogeneous state of the extended t - J model on a square lattice: A variational Monte Carlo and Gutzwiller approximation study

Chung-Pin Chou, Ting-Kuo Lee

We carry out the variational Monte Carlo calculation to examine spatially inhomogeneous states in hole- and electron-doped cuprates. By using Gutzwiller approximation, we consider the excitations, arising from charge density, spin density, and pair field, of the mean-field ground state of the $t$-$J$ model. It leads to the stripe patterns we have found numerically in a generalized $t$-$J$-type model including mass renormalization from the electron-phonon coupling. In the hole-doped side, a robust $d$-wave superconducting order results in the formation of the half-doped antiferromagnetic resonating-valence-bond (AF-RVB) stripes shown by the well-known Yamada plot. On the other hand, due to a long-range AF order in electron-doped materials, a stripe structure with the ``in-phase'' magnetic domain (IPMD) is obtained in the underdoped regime instead of the AF-RVB stripe. The IPMD stripe with the largest period permitted by lattice size is stabilized near the underdoped region and it excludes the Yamada plot from electron-doped cases. Based on finite lattice size to which we can reach, the existence of IPMD stripes may imply an electronic phase separation into an electron-rich and an insulating half-filled AF long-range ordered domains in electron-doped compounds.

Metallic and insulating stripes and their relation with superconductivity in the doped Hubbard model

Luca F. Tocchio, Arianna Montorsi, Federico Becca

The dualism between superconductivity and charge/spin modulations (the so-called stripes) dominates the phase diagram of many strongly-correlated systems. A prominent example is given by the Hubbard model, where these phases compete and possibly coexist in a wide regime of electron dopings for both weak and strong couplings. Here, we investigate this antagonism within a variational approach that is based upon Jastrow-Slater wave functions, including backflow correlations, which can be treated within a quantum Monte Carlo procedure. We focus on clusters having a ladder geometry with M M legs (with M M ranging from 2 2 to 10 10 ) and a relatively large number of rungs, thus allowing us a detailed analysis in terms of the stripe length. We find that stripe order with periodicity \lambda=8 λ = 8 in the charge and 2\lambda=16 2 λ = 16 in the spin can be stabilized at doping \delta=1/8 δ = 1 / 8 . Here, there are no sizable superconducting correlations and the ground state has an insulating character. A similar situation, with \lambda=6 λ = 6 , appears at \delta=1/6 δ = 1 / 6 . Instead, for smaller values of dopings, stripes can be still stabilized, but they are weakly metallic at \delta=1/12 δ = 1 / 12 and metallic with strong superconducting correlations at \delta=1/10 δ = 1 / 10 , as well as for intermediate (incommensurate) dopings. Remarkably, we observe that spin modulation plays a major role in stripe formation, since it is crucial to obtain a stable striped state upon optimization. The relevance of our calculations for previous density-matrix renormalization group results and for the two-dimensional case is also discussed.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of Spin, Charge, and Pairing correlations in the t−t′−U Hubbard model

Zhongbing Huang, Hua Lin, James E. Gubernatis

To clarify the effects of next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ on the spin, charge, and pairing correlations, we studied the two-dimensional $t\ensuremath{-}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{-}U$ Hubbard model using the constrained-path Monte Carlo technique. We found that a negative ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ suppresses the spin fluctuations near the Brillouin zone point $M=(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$ and the charge fluctuations near the point $X=(\ensuremath{\pi},0),$ while a positive ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ has the opposite effect. For a negative ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}},$ we also found that the long-range vertex contributions to the pairing correlations are heavily suppressed, but the local contributions are enhanced. Over the entire hole doping range studied, the d-wave long-range vertex contributions to pairing dominated those of the extended s-wave vertex contributions. In general, we did not find any tendency for these correlations to grow with increasing system size. We also did a limited number of simulations with an attractive nearest neighbor density-density interaction added to the $t\ensuremath{-}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{-}U$ model. It enhanced the long-range vertex contributions to the pairing correlations only for weak values of U.

Period 4 stripe in the extended two-dimensional Hubbard model

Boris Ponsioen, Sangwoo S. Chung, Philippe Corboz

We study the competition between stripe states with different periods and a uniform $d$-wave superconducting state in the extended two-dimensional Hubbard model at 1/8 hole doping using infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS). With increasing strength of negative next-nearest neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, the preferred period of the stripe decreases. For the values of ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ predicted for cuprate high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors, we find stripes with a period 4 in the charge order, in agreement with experiments. Superconductivity in the period 4 stripe is suppressed at $1/8$ doping. Only at larger doping, $0.18\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\delta}<0.25$, the period 4 stripe exhibits coexisting $d$-wave superconducting order. The uniform $d$-wave state is only favored for sufficiently large positive ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$.

Spin stripes in the Hubbard model: A combined dynamical mean-field theory and Bethe-Salpeter analysis

Ruslan Mushkaev, Francesco Petocchi, Shintaro Hoshino +1 more

The Hubbard model is known to accommodate various electronic orders, including stripes, which are important for understanding the physics of cuprates. We study spin-stripe order in the square lattice Hubbard model as a function of doping and temperature, by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation with the local vertex from dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), both inside and outside the antiferromagnetic phase. We find broad regions of horizontal/vertical spin stripes at low temperatures for the model with and without next-nearest neighbor hopping. Their wavelength depends on hole doping in a nonlinear fashion, and is highly sensitive to the ratio of nearest and next-nearest neighbor hoppings.
