Abstract

We use a functional integral formalism developed earlier for the pure Luttinger liquid (LL) to find an exact representation for the electron Green function of the LL in the presence of a single backscattering impurity in the low-temperature limit. This allows us to reproduce results (well known from the bosonization techniques) for the suppression of the electron local density of states (LDOS) at the position of the impurity and for the Friedel oscillations at finite temperature. In addition, we have extracted from the exact representation an analytic dependence of LDOS on the distance from the impurity and shown how it crosses over to that for the pure LL.

Exact Friedel oscillations in theg=1/2 Luttinger liquid

André LeClair, Frédéric Lesage, Hubert Saleur

A single impurity in the one-dimensional Luttinger model creates a local modification of the charge density analogous to the Friedel oscillations. In this paper, we present an exact solution of the case g=1/2 (the equivalent of the Toulouse point) at any temperature T and impurity coupling, expressing the charge density in terms of a hypergeometric function. We find in particular that at T=0 the oscillatory part of the density goes as lnx at small distance and ${\mathit{x}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1/2}$ at large distance. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Impurity-induced Friedel oscillations and Wigner crystallization in Luttinger liquids via Unified Field Bosonization Technique

Soundarya P, Venkata Suryanarayana M, Joy Prakash Das

We present an analytical study of impurity-induced density correlations in interacting one-dimensional Luttinger liquids using the Unified Field Bosonization Technique (UFBT). Unlike conventional approaches that treat impurities perturbatively, UFBT incorporates localized impurities exactly at the free-fermion level while treating interactions non-perturbatively. Closed analytical expressions for fermionic Green functions and density-density correlation functions are obtained for strongly inhomogeneous systems, enabling a unified description of the impurity-induced $2k_F$ Friedel oscillations and the $4k_F$ Wigner-crystal like correlations. The corresponding scaling behaviour is derived analytically, revealing a crossover in the dominant long-distance correlations at $g=1/3$: Friedel correlations dominate for $g>1/3$, whereas Wigner-crystal like correlations become dominant for $g<1/3$, corresponding to the regime of sufficiently strong repulsive interactions. A reflection-coupled harmonic analysis is developed to account for the left-right mixing induced by impurity backscattering and to consistently reproduce the resulting density correlations. The spinless limit is also obtained as a direct reduction of the spinful formulation. These results provide an analytically controlled framework for describing impurity-induced and interaction-driven density correlations in strongly inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems.

Transport properties of a Luttinger liquid in the presence of several time-dependent impurities

D. Makogon, Vladimir Juričić, C. Morais Smith

We study the transport properties of a Luttinger liquid in the presence of several time-dependent weak pointlike impurities. Our starting point is the bosonized form of the Luttinger liquid Hamiltonian with a potential introduced by the impurities. We find the correction to the total current due to the backscattering of the electrons by the impurities in first order of perturbation theory for a general time-dependent impurity potential. We then apply this result to a single time-dependent impurity, and show that it reproduces the result obtained by Feldman and Gefen [Phys. Rev. B 67, 115337 (2003)], in particular that the current enhancement occurs only for strong repulsive electron-electron interactions. For the case of two impurities oscillating with the same frequency, we find that the dc component of the backscattering current is positive even for weak repulsive interactions, due to the presence of the interference term induced by spatial correlations in the Luttinger liquid. We show that the impurity frequencies at which the enhancement takes place form a bandlike structure. In the case of several impurities, the bands become broader, because of interference effects.

Luttinger liquid renormalized by a single impurity

Kenji Kamide, Takashi Kimura, Susumu Kurihara

Transport through a spinless Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid is studied in the presence of a single impurity. A boundary bosonization technique is developed to treat an impurity of arbitrary strength. Our new bosonization formula (i) smoothly connects the ones for the strong and the weak impurity limits, and (ii) reproduces exact scaling equation for the transmission probability in the weak two-body interaction limit. With the use of our formula, TL parameter is determined from the long-distance correlation functions. The result indicates a possible renormalization of TL parameter due to the effect of the single impurity scattering.

Exact Green's Functions and Bosonization of a Luttinger Liquid Coupled to Impedances

K.-V. Pham

The exact Green's functions of a Luttinger Liquid (LL) connected to impedances are computed at zero and finite temperature. It is also shown that if the resistances are equal to the characteristic impedance of the Luttinger liquid, then the finite Luttinger liquid connected to resistors is equivalent to an infinite Luttinger liquid. Impedance boundary conditions (IBC) include also as a special limit the case of open boundary conditions, which are explicitly recovered. Finally bosonization for a LL with IBC is proven to hold.

Properties of a Luttinger liquid with boundaries at finite temperature and size

Ann Elisabet Mattsson, Sebastian Eggert, Henrik Johannesson

We use bosonization methods to calculate the exact finite-temperature single-electron Green's function of a spinful Luttinger liquid confined by open boundaries. The corresponding local spectral density is constructed and analyzed in detail. The interplay between boundary, finite-size, and thermal effects are shown to dramatically influence the low-energy properties of the system. In particular, the well-known zero-temperature critical behavior in the bulk always crosses over to a boundary dominated regime in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Thermal fluctuations cause an enhanced depletion of spectral weight for small energies $\ensuremath{\omega}$, with the spectral density scaling as ${\ensuremath{\omega}}^{2}$ for $\ensuremath{\omega}$ much less than the temperature. Consequences for photoemission experiments are discussed.
