Abstract

We calculate the dynamic single-particle and many-particle correlation functions at nonzero temperature in one-dimensional trapped repulsive Bose gases. These correlation functions decay towards zero for increasing distance, and this decay is governed by a scaling exponent that has a universal expression in terms of observed quantities. This expression is valid in the weak-interaction Gross-Pitaevskii as well as in the strong-interaction Girardeau-Tonks limit, but the observed quantities involved depend on the interaction strength. The confining trap introduces a weak center-of-mass dependence in the scaling exponent. Based on previous exact results for a related untrapped Bose system and the results reported here, we also suggest the proper asymptotic form for the density-density correlation function in the trapped Bose gas as considered here.

Finite-temperature correlations and density profiles of an inhomogeneous interacting one-dimensional Bose gas

Karen V. Kheruntsyan, Dimitri M. Gangardt, P. D. Drummond +1 more

We calculate the density profiles and density correlation functions of the one-dimensional Bose gas in a harmonic trap, using the exact finite-temperature solutions for the uniform case, and applying a local density approximation. The results are valid for a trapping potential that is slowly varying relative to a correlation length. They allow a direct experimental test of the transition from the weak-coupling Gross-Pitaevskii regime to the strong-coupling, ``fermionic'' Tonks-Girardeau regime. We also calculate the average two-particle correlation which characterizes the bulk properties of the sample, and find that it can be well approximated by the value of the local pair correlation in the trap center.

Nonlocal pair correlations in the one-dimensional Bose gas at finite temperature

Piotr Deuar, A. G. Sykes, Dimitri M. Gangardt +3 more

The behavior of the spatial two-particle correlation function is surveyed in detail for a uniform one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions at finite temperatures. Long-, medium-, and short-range effects are investigated. The results span the entire range of physical regimes from ideal gas to strongly interacting and from zero temperature to high temperature (Gross-Pitaevskii) and strongly interacting (Tonks-Girardeau) gases. We present perturbative analytic methods, available at strong and weak couplings, and first-principles numerical results using imaginary time simulations with the gauge-$P$ representation in regimes where perturbative methods are invalid. Nontrivial effects are observed from the interplay of thermally induced bunching behavior versus interaction induced antibunching.

One-body correlations and momentum distributions of trapped one-dimensional Bose gases at finite temperature

Attila Takács, Yicheng Zhang, Pasquale Calabrese +3 more

We introduce a general approximate method for calculating the one-body correlations and the momentum distributions of one-dimensional Bose gases at finite interaction strengths and temperatures trapped in smooth confining potentials. Our method combines asymptotic techniques for the long-distance behavior of the gas (similar to Luttinger liquid theory) with known short-distance expansions. We derive analytical results for the limiting cases of strong and weak interactions and provide a general procedure for calculating one-body correlations at any interaction strength. A step-by-step explanation of the numerical method used to compute Green's functions (needed as input to our theory) is included. We benchmark our method against exact numerical calculations and compare its predictions to recent experimental results.

Collective modes of a harmonically trapped one-dimensional Bose gas: The effects of finite particle number and nonzero temperature

Xiao-Long Chen, Yun Li, Hui Hu

Following the idea of the density-functional approach, we develop a generalized Bogoliubov theory of an interacting Bose gas confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap by using a local chemical potential, calculated with the Lieb-Liniger exact solution, as the exchange energy. At zero temperature, we use the theory to describe collective modes of a finite-particle system in all interaction regimes from the ideal gas limit to the mean-field Thomas-Fermi regime and to the strongly interacting Tonks-Girardeau regime. At finite temperature, we investigate the temperature dependence of collective modes in the weak-coupling regime by means of a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation. By emphasizing the effects of finite particle number and nonzero temperature on collective-mode frequencies, we compare our results with a recent experimental measurement [E. Haller et al., Science 325, 1224 (2009)] and some previous theoretical predictions. We show that the experimental data are still not fully explained within current theoretical framework.

Exploring the growth of correlations in a quasi one-dimensional trapped Bose gas

M. Eckart, R. Walser, W. P. Schleich

Phase correlations, density fluctuations and three-body loss rates are relevant for many experiments in quasi one-dimensional geometries. Extended mean-field theory is used to evaluate correlation functions up to third order for a quasi one-dimensional trapped Bose gas at zero and finite temperature. At zero temperature and in the homogeneous limit, we also study the transition from the weakly correlated Gross–Pitaevskii regime to the strongly correlated Tonks–Girardeau regime analytically. We compare our results with the exact Lieb–Liniger solution for the homogeneous case and find good agreement up to the cross-over regime.
