Abstract

Following the idea of the density-functional approach, we develop a generalized Bogoliubov theory of an interacting Bose gas confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap by using a local chemical potential, calculated with the Lieb-Liniger exact solution, as the exchange energy. At zero temperature, we use the theory to describe collective modes of a finite-particle system in all interaction regimes from the ideal gas limit to the mean-field Thomas-Fermi regime and to the strongly interacting Tonks-Girardeau regime. At finite temperature, we investigate the temperature dependence of collective modes in the weak-coupling regime by means of a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation. By emphasizing the effects of finite particle number and nonzero temperature on collective-mode frequencies, we compare our results with a recent experimental measurement [E. Haller et al., Science 325, 1224 (2009)] and some previous theoretical predictions. We show that the experimental data are still not fully explained within current theoretical framework.

Collective modes of a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas in the presence of the anomalous density

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We study the collective modes of a one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the anomalous density using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Within the hydrodynamic equations, we derive analytical expressions for the mode frequencies and the density fluctuations of the anomalous density which constitutes the minority component at very low temperature and feels an effective external potential exerted by the majority component, i.e., the condensate. On the other hand, we numerically examine the temperature dependence of the breathing mode oscillations of the condensate at finite temperature in the weak-coupling regime. At zero temperature, we compare our predictions with available experimental data, theoretical treatments, and Monte carlo simulations in all interaction regimes and the remaining hindrances are emphasized. We show that the anomalous correlations have a non-negligible role on the collective modes at both zero and finite temperatures.

Collective modes of a one-dimensional trapped atomic Bose gas at finite temperatures

Hui Hu, Gao Xianlong, Xia-Ji Liu

We theoretically investigate collective modes of a one-dimensional (1D) interacting Bose gas in a harmonic tras at finite temperatures, by using a variational approach and the local density approximation. We find that the temperature dependence of collective mode frequencies is notably different in the weakly and strongly interacting regimes. Therefore, the experimental measurement of collective modes could provide a sensitive probe for different quantum phases of a 1D trapped Bose gas, realized by tuning the interatomic interaction strength and temperature. Our prediction on the temperature dependence of the breathing mode frequency is in good qualitative agreement with an earlier experimental measurement for a weakly interacting 1D Bose gas of rubidium-87 atoms in harmonic traps [Moritz et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 250402 (2003)].

Collective excitations of a dilute Bose gas at finite temperature: time dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Nadia Guebli

Abstract Using the time-dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov approach, where the condensate is coupled with the thermal cloud and the anomalous density, we study the equilibrium and the dynamical properties of three-dimensional quantum-degenerate Bose gas at finite temperature. Effects of the anomalous correlations on the condensed fraction and the critical temperature are discussed. In uniform Bose gas, useful expressions for the Bogoliubov excitations spectrum, the first and second sound, the condensate depletion and the superfluid fraction are derived. Our results are tested by comparing the findings computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present also a systematic investigation of the collective modes of a Bose condensate confined in an external trap. Our predictions are in qualitative agreement with previous experimental and theoretical results. We show in particular that our theory is capable of explaining the so-called anomalous behavior of the m = 0 mode.

Monopole Excitations of a Harmonically Trapped One-Dimensional Bose Gas from the Ideal Gas to the Tonks-Girardeau Regime

Seok Jin Choi, Vanja Dunjko, Zhedong Zhang +1 more

Using a time-dependent modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation (MNLSE)-where the conventional chemical potential proportional to the density is replaced by the one inferred from Lieb-Liniger's exact solution-we study frequencies of the collective monopole excitations of a one-dimensional Bose gas. We find that our method accurately reproduces the results of a recent experimental study [E. Haller et al., Science 325, 1224 (2009)] in the full spectrum of interaction regimes from the ideal gas, through the mean-field regime, through the mean-field Thomas-Fermi regime, all the way to the Tonks-Giradeau gas. While the former two are accessible by the standard time-dependent NLSE and inaccessible by the time-dependent local density approximation, the situation reverses in the latter case. However, the MNLSE is shown to treat all these regimes within a single numerical method.

Finite-temperature theory of superfluid bosons in optical lattices

D. Baillie, P. B. Blakie

A practical finite-temperature theory is developed for the superfluid regime of a weakly interacting Bose gas in an optical lattice with additional harmonic confinement. We derive an extended Bose-Hubbard model that is valid for shallow lattices and when excited bands are occupied. Using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov mean-field approach, and applying local-density and coarse-grained envelope approximations, we arrive at a theory that can be numerically implemented accurately and efficiently. We present results for a three-dimensional system, characterizing the importance of the features of the extended Bose-Hubbard model and compare against other theoretical results and show an improved agreement with experimental data.

Reentrant behavior of breathing mode in one-dimensional Bose gas

Andrii Gudyma, G. E. Astrakharchik, Mikhail B. Zvonarev

We calculate the breathing mode frequency $\omega$ in a one-dimensional Bose gas confined to a harmonic trap of frequency $\omega_z$. We predict a smooth crossover from Thomas-Fermi Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) regime ($\omega = \sqrt{3} \omega_z$) to Gaussian BEC regime ($\omega = 2 \omega_z$) using Hartree approximation and sum rules approach, adopted to small system sizes. Local density approximation (LDA) correctly captures the crossover from Tonks-Girardeau ($\omega = 2 \omega_z$) to Thomas-Fermi BEC ($\omega = \sqrt{3} \omega_z$) regimes. Predictions from local density and Hartree approximations can be continuously matched for $N>25$ particles, providing a complete zero-temperature description for large number of particles and resulting in a non-monotonic reentrant behavior of the breathing frequency. For smaller number of particles (ranging from $N=2$ to $N=25$) we perform extensive diffusion Monte Carlo simulations. This permits us to obtain a complete picture, applicable to arbitrary number of particles and any repulsive interaction strength. We provide perturbative analysis for both weak and strong coupling regimes. We revisit Innsbruck group experiment [Science 325, 1224 (2009)], analyzing the measurements done in Thomas-Fermi - Gaussian BEC crossover, and demonstrate that the breathing frequency follows a reentrant behavior as a function of the interaction strength in full agreement with our theory.
