Abstract

We construct the boundary conformal field theory that describes the low-temperature behavior of the two-channel Anderson impurity model. The presence of an exactly marginal operator is shown to generate a line of stable fixed points parametrized by the charge valence ${n}_{c}$ of the impurity. We calculate the exact zero-temperature entropy and impurity thermodynamics along the fixed line. We also derive the critical exponents of the characteristic Fermi edge singularities caused by time-dependent hybridization between conduction electrons and impurity. Our results suggest that in the mixed-valent regime ${(n}_{c}\ensuremath{\ne}0,1)$ the electrons participate in two competing processes, leading to frustrated screening of spin and channel degrees of freedom. By combining the boundary conformal field theory with the Bethe-Ansatz solution we obtain a complete description of the low-energy dynamics of the model.

Solution of the Two-Channel Anderson Impurity Model: Implications for the Heavy Fermion UBe13

C. J. Bolech, Natan Andrei

We solve the two-channel Anderson impurity model using the Bethe-ansatz. We determine the ground state and derive the thermodynamics, obtaining the impurity entropy and specific heat over the full range of temperature. We show that the low-temperature physics is given by a line of fixed points describing a two-channel non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the integral valence regime associated with moment formation as well as in the mixed valence regime where no moment forms. We discuss the relevance for the theory of UBe13.

Solution of the multichannel Anderson impurity model: Ground state and thermodynamics

C. J. Bolech, Natan Andrei

We present the solution of the $\mathrm{SU}(N)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}(M)$ Anderson impurity model using the Bethe-Ansatz. We first explain what extensions to the formalism were required for the solution. Subsequently we determine the ground state and derive the thermodynamics over the full range of temperature and fields. We identify the different regimes of valence fluctuation at high temperatures, followed by moment formation or intrinsic mixed valence at intermediate temperatures and a low temperature non-Fermi liquid phase. Among other things we obtain the impurity entropy, charge valence, and specific heat over the full range of temperature. We show that the low-energy physics is governed by a line of fixed points. This describes non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the integral valence regime, associated with moment formation, as well as in the mixed valence regime where no moment forms.

Two-channel Anderson impurity model: Single-electron Green’s function, self-energies, and resistivity

Henrik Johannesson, C. J. Bolech, Natan Andrei

We compute exactly the low-energy single-electron Green's function, the impurity and electron self-energies, and the resistivity for the two-channel Anderson impurity model. These results are obtained by exploiting the boundary conformal field theory identified from the Bethe ansatz solution of the model. Using that solution we can make contact with the parameters of the original Hamiltonian and provide the detailed crossover between the two integer valence limits. Our results generalize those obtained previously in the context of the two-channel Kondo model.

Boundary phases and thermodynamics of the Kondo spin-$s$ chain: from overscreened Kondo to boundary-bound states

Abay Zhakenov, Pradip Kattel, Andreas Gleis +1 more

We study a spin-$\frac12$ impurity coupled to the boundary of a strongly correlated spin-$s$ Takhtajan--Babujian chain, an integrable model whose low-energy physics is described by a perturbed $SU(2)_{2s}$ Wess--Zumino--Witten conformal field theory. While boundary conformal field theory determines the low-energy universality class of the weak-coupling regime, exact Bethe Ansatz methods reveal a sequence of boundary quantum phase transitions in which impurity-bound states emerge and reorganize the Hilbert space into multiple excitation towers built on distinct boundary configurations. This tower restructuring provides the organizing principle for a rich boundary phase diagram extending beyond the conventional Kondo regime. Weak antiferromagnetic coupling realizes the overscreened $2s$-channel Kondo universality class, whereas stronger couplings generate localized boundary modes and qualitatively new screening mechanisms. To describe the resulting thermodynamics, we develop a generalized thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz framework that captures the multi-tower structure across all regimes. The impurity entropy reproduces the boundary conformal field theory prediction in the overscreened Kondo regime but develops pronounced nonmonotonic temperature dependence once boundary-bound states appear, in quantitative agreement with large-scale finite-temperature matrix-product-operator simulations. Complementary dynamical calculations reveal sharp threshold features in the impurity spectral function that directly track the underlying tower structure. Together, boundary conformal field theory, exact Bethe Ansatz, generalized thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz, and tensor-network simulations provide a unified description of impurity screening, boundary-bound-state formation, and excitation-tower reconstruction in a correlated spin-$s$ chain.

Multichannel Kondo effect in an interacting electron system: Exact results for the low-temperature thermodynamics

Mats Granath, Henrik Johannesson

We study the low-temperature thermodynamics of a spin-$S$ magnetic impurity coupled to $m>~2$ degenerate bands of interacting electrons in one dimension. By exploiting boundary-conformal-field-theory techniques, we derive exact results for the possible impurity thermal and magnetic response. The leading behavior of the impurity magnetic susceptibility is shown to be insensitive to the electron-electron interaction. In contrast, there are two types of scaling behavior of the impurity specific heat consistent with the symmetries of the problem: Either it remains the same as for the ordinary multichannel Kondo problem for noninteracting electrons or it acquires a new leading term governed by a critical exponent ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{m}{=(g}_{m}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\ensuremath{-}1)/m,$ where ${g}_{m}<~1$ is a generalized ($m$ channel) Luttinger-liquid charge parameter measuring the strength of the repulsive electron-electron interaction. We conjecture that the latter behavior is indeed realized when the impurity is exactly screened $(m=2S).$

Overscreened single-channel Kondo problem

Anirvan M. Sengupta, Yong Baek Kim

We consider the single-channel Kondo problem with the Kondo coupling between a spin $S$ impurity and conduction electrons with spin $j$. These problems arise as multicritical points in the parameter spaces of two-and higher-level tunneling systems and some impurity models of heavy fermion compounds. In contrast to the previous Bethe-ansatz conjectures, it turns out that the dynamics of the spin sector is the same as that of a spin-$S$ impurity coupled to $k(j)$ channels of spin-\textonehalf{} electrons with $k(j)=2\frac{j(j+1)(2j+1)}{3}$. As a result, for $2S<k(j)$, the system shows non-Fermi-liquid behavior with the same exponents for the thermodynamic quantities as those of the $k(j)$-channel Kondo problem. However, both the finite-size spectrum and the operator content are different due to the presence of the other sectors and can be obtained by conformal field theory techniques.
