Bulk and surface properties in the critical phase of the two-dimensionalXYmodel

Abstract

Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional XY model are performed in a square geometry with various boundary conditions (BC). Using conformal mappings we deduce the exponent η σ ( T ) of the order parameter correlation function and its surface analogue η ∥ ( T ) as a function of the temperature in the critical (low-temperature) phase of the model. The temperature dependence of both exponents is obtained numerically with a good accuracy up to the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition temperature. The bulk exponent follows from simulations of correlation functions with periodic boundary conditions or order parameter profiles with open boundary conditions and with symmetry breaking surface fields. At very low temperatures, η σ ( T ) is found in pretty good agreement with the linear temperature-dependence of Berezinskii's spin-wave approximation. We also show some evidence that there are no noticeable logarithmic corrections to the behaviour of the order parameter density profile at the Kosterlitz–Thouless (KT) transition temperature, while these corrections exist for the correlation function. At the KT transition the value η σ ( T KT ) = 1/4 is accurately recovered. The exponent associated with the surface correlations is similarly obtained after a slight modification of the boundary conditions: the correlation function is computed with free BC, and the profile with mixed fixed–free BC. It exhibits a monotonic behaviour with temperature, starting linearly according to the spin-wave approximation and increasing up to a value η ∥ ( T KT ) ≃ 1/2 at the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition temperature. The thermal exponent η ε ( T ) is also computed and we give some evidence that it keeps a constant value in agreement with the marginality condition of the temperature field below the KT transition.

Correlations in the low-temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY model

Bertrand Berche, A. I. Fariñas Sanchez, Ricardo Paredes V.

Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional XY model are performed in a square geometry with fixed boundary conditions. Using a conformal mapping, it is very easy to deduce the exponent η σ ( T ) of the order parameter correlation function at any temperature in the critical phase of the model. The temperature behaviour of η σ ( T ) is obtained numerically with a good accuracy up to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature. At very low temperatures, a good agreement is found with Berezinskii's harmonic approximation. Surprisingly, we show some evidence that there are no logarithmic corrections to the behaviour of the order parameter density profile (with symmetry-breaking surface fields) at the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature.

Surface properties at the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition

Bertrand Berche, Université Henri Poincaré

Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional XY model are performed in a square geometry with free and mixed fixed-free boundary conditions. Using a Schwarz-Christoffel conformal mapping, we deduce the exponent η of the order parameter correlation function and its surface equivalent η ‖ at the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature. The well known value η(TKT) = 1/4 is easily recovered even with systems of relatively small sizes, since the shape effects are encoded in the conformal mapping. The exponent associated to the surface correlations is similarly obtained η1(TKT) ≃ 0.54. 1

Critical behavior of the two-dimensionalXYmodel

Rajan Gupta, CLIVE F. BAILLIE

We present detailed Monte Carlo results for the susceptibility \ensuremath{\chi}, correlation length \ensuremath{\xi}, and specific heat ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{v}}$ for the XY model. The simulations are done on ${64}^{2}$, ${128}^{2}$, ${256}^{2}$, and ${512}^{2}$ lattices over the temperature range 0.98\ensuremath{\le}T\ensuremath{\le}1.43 corresponding to 270. Fits to \ensuremath{\chi} and \ensuremath{\xi} data favor a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) singularity over a second-order transition; however, unconstrained four-parameter KT fits do not confirm the predicted values \ensuremath{\nu}=0.5 and \ensuremath{\eta}=0.25. Our best estimate, ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$=0.894(5), is obtained using KT fits with \ensuremath{\nu} fixed at 0.5. The exponent \ensuremath{\eta} is calculated as a function of temperature in the spin-wave phase using Monte Carlo renormalization-group and finite-size-scaling methods. Both methods give consistent results and we find \ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\approxeq}0.235 at T=0.894. We also present results for the behavior of vortex density across the transition and exhibit how the dilute-gas approximation breaks down.

Numerical investigation of the ageing of the fully frustratedXYmodel

Jean‐Charles Walter, Christophe Chatelain

We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the fully frustrated XY model. At equilibrium, this model undergoes two phase transitions at two very close temperatures: a Kosterlitz–Thouless topological transition and a second-order phase transition between a paramagnetic phase and a low-temperature phase where the chiralities of the lattice plaquettes are antiferromagnetically ordered. We compute by means of Monte Carlo simulations two-time spin–spin and chirality–chirality autocorrelation and response functions. From the dynamics of the spin waves in the low-temperature phase, we extract the temperature-dependent exponent η. We provide evidence for logarithmic corrections above the Kosterlitz–Thouless temperature and interpret them as a manifestation of free topological defects. Our estimates of the autocorrelation exponent and the fluctuation-dissipation ratio differ from the XY values, while η( T KT ) lies at the boundary of the error bar. Indications for logarithmic corrections at the second-order critical temperature are presented. However, the coupling between angles and chiralities is still strong and explains why the autocorrelation exponent and fluctuation-dissipation ratio are far from the Ising values and seem stable.

The phase diagram and critical properties of the two-dimensional anisotropicXYmodel

Antonio S. T. Pires, L.S. Lima, M. E. Gouvêa

In this paper we present a study of the phase diagram and critical properties of the square-lattice quantum XY model, with a single-ion anisotropy and spin S = 1, as a function of the anisotropy parameter D . For D less than a critical value D C , which is the critical point for a quantum phase transition at T = 0, the model presents a Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) transition. This region is adequately described by the self-consistent harmonic approximation. We show that, if we want to use a Schwinger boson theory in this region, we should include fluctuations around the mean-field approximation (which leads to a gauge field) to describe correctly the BKT transition. However both methods are inadequate to describe the large- D phase, and we show that this phase can be studied using the bond operator formalism which gives the correct behaviour for the correlation length as a function of the temperature in the critical point and above. Our results agree with scaling arguments.

Numerical studies on critical properties of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase for the gauge glass model in two dimensions

Yukiyasu Ozeki, Satoshi Yotsuyanagi, Takuya Sakai +1 more

The critical exponents are estimated for the gauge glass model in two dimensions, in which only the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase appears in the low-temperature regime. The nonequilibrium relaxation method is applied to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents: the static exponent η and the dynamical exponent z. Since the system exhibits criticality in the whole KT phase, we estimate the exponents on the boundary as well as inside the KT phase. The static exponent η depends on both the temperature and the strength of randomness, while the dynamical one z is almost constant throughout the KT phase, including the boundary.
