Variational calculation of many-body wave functions and energies from density functional theory

Abstract

A generating coordinate is introduced into the exchange-correlation functional of density functional theory (DFT). The many-body wave function is represented as a superposition of Kohn–Sham (KS) Slater determinants arising from different values of the generating coordinate. This superposition is used to variationally calculate many-body energies and wave functions from solutions of the KS equation of DFT. The method works for ground and excited states, and does not depend on identifying the KS orbitals and energies with physical ones. Numerical application to the Helium isoelectronic series illustrates the method’s viability and potential.

Expressions for the Exchange Correlation Potential and Exchange Correlation Functional of Kohn--Sham Density Functional Theory

James P. Finley

The State--Specific Kohn--Sham Density Functional Theory [arXiv:physics/0506037] is used to derive the Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential $\vxc$ and exchange-correlation energy $\Eco$ as explicit functionals of $v_s$ and $ϕ_1$, where $v_s$ is the local, one-body potential from the Kohn--Sham equations, and $ϕ_1$ is the spinless one-particle density matrix from the Kohn--Sham noninteracting state, say $|ϕ_1\ran$. In other words, $|ϕ_1\ran$ is the ground state eigenfunction of the noninteracting Schrödinger equation with the one-body potential $v_s$. For simplicity, we only consider noninteracting states that are closed-shell states and interacting states that are nondegenerate, singlet ground-states.

Density functional theory with spatial-symmetry breaking and configuration mixing

T. Lesinski

This article generalizes the notion of the local density of a many-body system to introduce collective coordinates as explicit degrees of freedom. It is shown that the energy of the system can be expressed as a functional of this object. The latter can in turn be factorized as the product of the square modulus of a collective wave function and a normalized collective-coordinate-dependent density. Energy minimization translates into a set of coupled equations, i.e., a local Schr\"odinger equation for the collective wave function and a set of Kohn-Sham equations for optimizing the normalized density at each point in the collective space. These equations reformulate the many-body problem exactly provided one is able to determine density- and collective-wave-function-dependent terms of the collective mass and potential which play a similar role to the exchange-correlation term in electronic Kohn-Sham density functional theory.

Exact exchange-correlation potential of effectively interacting Kohn-Sham systems

Shunsuke A. Sato, Ángel Rubio

Aiming to combine density functional theory (DFT) and wave-function theory, we study a mapping from the many-body interacting system to an effectively interacting Kohn-Sham system instead of a noninteracting Kohn-Sham system. Because a ground state of effectively interacting systems requires having a solution for the correlated many-body wave functions, this provides a natural framework to many-body wave-function theories such as the configuration interaction and the coupled-cluster method in the formal theoretical framework of DFT. Employing simple one-dimensional two-electron systems---namely, the one-dimensional helium atom, the hydrogen molecule, and the heteronuclear diatomic molecule---we investigate properties of many-body wave functions and exact exchange-correlation potentials of effectively interacting Kohn-Sham systems. As a result, we find that the asymptotic behavior of the exact exchange-correlation potential can be controlled by optimizing that of the effective interaction. Furthermore, the typical features of the exact noninteracting Kohn-Sham system, namely, a spiky feature and a step feature in the exchange-correlation potential for the molecular dissociation limit, can be suppressed by a proper choice of the effective interaction. These findings open a possibility to construct numerically robust and efficient exchange-correlation potentials and functionals based on the effectively interacting Kohn-Sham scheme.

A Rigorous Extension of the Kohn-Sham Equation for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

Koichi Kusakabe

By introducing a set of auxiliary equations representing a many-body system, we have derived an extension of the Kohn-Sham scheme for the density functional theory. These equations consist of a Kohn-Sham-type equation determining single-particle orbitals and an eigen-value equation for an effective many-body problem. A variational method similar to the Kohn-Sham technique was utilized to derive effective interactions as well as effective potentials without artificial substitution of a Hubbard-type interaction and a mean-field correction in the energy functional. The second equation is described by an effective many-body Hamiltonian with both 2-body interactions and mean-field terms. Rigorous formulation of the extended Kohn-Sham equation is also given in accordance with the Hadjisavvas-Theophilou formulation. Our formulation can be interpreted as a way to define models of the strongly correlated electron systems, e.g. the Hubbard model

A closed local-orbital unified description of DFT and many-body effects

Fernando Flores, Diego Soler‐Polo, José Ortega

Abstract Density functional theory (DFT) is usually formulated in terms of the electron density as a function of position n(r). Here we discuss an alternative formulation of DFT in terms of the orbital occupation numbers {n α } associated with a local-orbital orthonormal basis set {ϕ α }. First, we discuss how the building blocks of DFT, namely the Hohenberg–Kohn theorems, the Levy–Lieb approach and the Kohn–Sham method, can be adapted for a description in terms of {n α }. In particular, the total energy is now a function of {n α }, E[{n α }], and a Kohn–Sham-like Hamiltonian is derived introducing the effects of the electron–electron interactions via effective potentials, { V α eff = ∂ E e e [ { n β } ] / ∂ n α } . In a second step we consider the Hartree and exchange energies and discuss how to describe them, in the spirit of a DFT approach, in terms of the orbital occupation numbers. In this contribution special attention is paid to the description of the (intra-atomic) correlation energy and corresponding correlation potentials {V corr,α }. For this purpose, a model system is analyzed in detail, whereby an atomic Hamiltonian interacts with the environment via a simplified model; the use of this model allows us to obtain the correlation energy and potentials (in terms of {n α }) for different cases corresponding to low, intermediate and high electron correlations.

Generalized Kohn-Sham Density-Functional Theory via Effective Action Formalism

Marat Valiev, Gayanath Fernando

We present a rigorous formulation of generalized Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This provides a straightforward Kohn-Sham description of many-body systems based not only on particle-density but also on any other observable. We illustrate the formalism for the case of a particle-density based description of a nonrelativistic many-electron system. We obtain a simple diagrammatic expansion of the exchange-correlation functional in terms of Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies; develop systematic Kohn-Sham formulation for one-electron propagators and many-body excitation energies. This work is ideally suited for practical applications and provides a rigorous basis for a systematic development of the existing body of first-principles calculations in a controllable fashion.
