Elementary excitations of the BCS model in the canonical ensemble

Abstract

We have found the elementary excitations of the exactly solvable BCS model for a fixed number of particles. These turn out to have a peculiar dispersion relation, some of them with no counterpart in the Bogoliubov picture, and unusual counting properties related to an old conjecture made by Gaudin. We give an algorithm to count the number of excitations for each excited state and a graphical interpretation in terms of paths and Young diagrams. For large systems the excitations are described by an effective Gaudin model, which accounts for the finite-size corrections to BCS.

THE ELEMENTARY EXCITATIONS OF THE BCS MODEL IN THE CANONICAL ENSEMBLE

G. SIERRA, J. M. ROMÁN, J. Dukelsky

We summarize previous works on the exact ground state and the elementary excitations of the exactly solvable BCS model in the canonical ensemble. The BCS model is solved by Richardson equations, and, in the large coupling limit, by Gaudin equations. The relationship between this two kinds of solutions is used to classify the excitations.

Exact Correlation Functions of the BCS Model in the Canonical Ensemble

Luigi Amico A, Andreas Osterloh

We evaluate correlation functions of the BCS model for a finite number of particles. The integrability of the Hamiltonian relates it with the Gaudin algebra G[sl(2)]. Therefore, a theorem that Sklyanin proved for the Gaudin model, can be applied. Several diagonal and off-diagonal correlators are calculated. The finite-size scaling behavior of the pairing correlation function is studied.

Canonical BCS approximation for the attractive Hubbard model

K. Tanaka, F. Marsiglio

We test the canonical BCS wave functions for fixed number of electrons for the attractive Hubbard model. We present results in one dimension for various chain lengths, electron densities, and coupling strengths. The ground-state energy and energy gap to the first excited state are compared with the exact solutions obtained by the Bethe ansatz as well as with the results from the conventional grand-canonical BCS approximations. While the canonical and grand-canonical BCS results are both in very good agreement with the exact results for the ground state energies, improvements due to conserving the electron number in finite systems are manifest in the energy gap. As the system size is increased, the canonical results converge to the grand-canonical ones. The ``parity'' effect that arises from the number parity (even or odd) of electrons are studied with our canonical scheme.

Quasimomentum of an elementary excitation for a system of point bosons under zero boundary conditions

Maksim Tomchenko

As is known, an elementary excitation of a many-particle system with boundaries is not characterized by a definite momentum. We obtain the formula for the quasimomentum of an elementary excitation for a one-dimensional system of N spinless point bosons under zero boundary conditions (BCs). In this case, we use Gaudin's solutions obtained with the help of the Bethe ansatz. We have also found the dispersion laws of the particle-like and hole-like excita tions under zero BCs. They coincide with the known dispersion laws obtained under periodic BCs.

Exact mesoscopic correlation functions of the Richardson pairing model

Alexandre Faribault, Pasquale Calabrese, Jean-Sébastien Caux

We study the static correlation functions of the Richardson pairing model (also known as the reduced or discrete-state BCS model) in the canonical ensemble. Making use of the algebraic Bethe ansatz formalism, we obtain exact expressions which are easily evaluated numerically for any value of the pairing strength up to large numbers of particles. We provide explicit results at half-filling and extensively discuss their finite-size scaling behavior.
