Abstract

Mott metal-insulator transitions in an M-fold orbitally degenerate Hubbard model are studied by means of a generalization of the linearized dynamical mean-field theory. The method allows for an efficient and reliable determination of the critical interaction ${U}_{\mathrm{c}}$ for any integer filling n and different M at zero temperature. For half filling a linear dependence of ${U}_{\mathrm{c}}$ on M is found. Inclusion of the (full) Hund's rule exchange J results in a strong reduction of ${U}_{\mathrm{c}}.$ The transition turns out to change qualitatively from continuous for $J=0$ to discontinuous for any finite J. This result is confirmed using the exact-diagonalization method for $M=2.$

Mott metal-insulator transitions in an M-fold orbitally degenerate Hubbard model are studied by means of a generalization of the linearized dynamical mean-field theory. The method allows for an efficient and reliable determination of the critical interaction Uc for any integer filling n and different M at zero temperature. For half-filling a linear dependence of Uc on M is found. Inclusion of the (full) Hund's rule exchange J results in a strong reduction of Uc. The transition turns out to change qualitatively from continuous for J=0 to discontinuous for any finite J. This result is confirmed using the exact-diagonalization method for M=2.

Critical Behaviour near the Mott Metal–Insulator Transition in a Two-Band Hubbard Model

Yasuo Ohashi, Yoshiaki Ōno

The Mott metal-insulator transition in the two-band Hubbard model in infinite dimensions is studied by using the linearized dynamical mean-field theory. The discontinuity in the chemical potential for the change from hole to electron doping is calculated analytically as a function of the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ at the $d$-orbital and the charge-transfer energy $Δ$ between the $d$- and $p$-orbitals. Critical behaviour of the quasiparticle weight is also obtained analytically as a function of $U$ and $Δ$. The analytic results are in good agreement with the numerical results of the exact diagonalization method.

Stability of a metallic state in the two-orbital Hubbard model

Akihisa Koga, Yoshiki Imai, Norio Kawakami

Electron correlations in the two-orbital Hubbard model at half-filling are investigated by combining dynamical mean field theory with the exact diagonalization method. We systematically study how the interplay of the intra- and interband Coulomb interactions, together with the Hund coupling, effects the metal--insulator transition. It is found that if the intra- and interband Coulomb interactions are nearly equal, the Fermi-liquid state is stabilized due to orbital fluctuations up to fairly large interactions, while the system is immediately driven to the Mott insulating phase away from this condition. The effects of the isotropic and anisotropic Hund coupling are also addressed.

Asymmetric Hubbard Model and Mott Metal-Insulator Transition

Wang Qi-fang

Starting from the standard Hubbard model, this paper obtained an asymmetric Hamiltonian for the half-filled strongly correlated system by ignoring the jumping of electrons with spin-σ between lattice sites when the motion of electrons with spin σ is considered. The mean field approximation is applied to get the quasi-particle spectrum of the Hamiltonian. The results at zero-temperature and finite temperature are analyzed, the possibility and critical temperature of Mott metal-insulator transition is also investigated.

Quantum Phase Transition in the Two-Band Hubbard Model

Theo A. Costi, A. Liebsch

The interaction between itinerant and Mott localized electronic states in strongly correlated materials is studied within dynamical mean field theory in combination with the numerical renormalization group method. A novel nonmagnetic zero temperature quantum phase transition is found in the bad-metallic orbital-selective Mott phase of the two-band Hubbard model, for values of the Hund's exchange which are relevant to typical transition metal oxides.

Mott transition at large orbital degeneracy: Dynamical mean-field theory

Serge Florens, Antoine Georges, Gabriel Kotliar +1 more

We study analytically the Mott transition of the N-orbital Hubbard model using dynamical mean-field theory and a low-energy projection onto an effective Kondo model. It is demonstrated that the critical interaction at which the insulator appears ${(U}_{c1})$ and the one at which the metal becomes unstable ${(U}_{c2})$ have a different dependence on the number of orbitals as the latter becomes large: ${U}_{c1}\ensuremath{\propto}\sqrt{N}$ while ${U}_{c2}\ensuremath{\propto}N.$ An exact analytical determination of the critical coupling ${U}_{c2}/N$ is obtained in the large-N limit. The metallic solution close to this critical coupling has many similarities at low-energy with the results of slave boson approximations, to which a comparison is made. We also discuss how the critical temperature associated with the Mott critical endpoint depends on the number of orbitals.
