Competing orders in coupled Luttinger liquids

Abstract

We consider the problem of two-coupled Luttinger liquids both at half filling and at low doping levels, to investigate the problem of competing orders in quasi-one-dimensional strongly correlated systems. We use bosonization and renormalization group equations to investigate the phase diagrams, to determine the allowed phases, and to establish approximate boundaries among them. Because of the chiral translation and reflection symmetries in the charge mode away from half filling, orders of charge-density wave (CDW) and spin Peierls (SP), diagonal current (DC), and d-density wave (DDW) form two doublets and thus can be at most quasi-long-range ordered. At half filling, Umklapp terms break this symmetry down to a discrete group and thus Ising-type ordered phases appear as a result of spontaneous breaking of the residual symmetries. Quantum disordered Haldane phases are also found, with finite amplitudes of pairing orders and triplet counterparts of CDW, SP, DC, and DDW. Relations with recent numerical results and implications to similar problems in two dimensions are discussed.

Phase diagram and correlation functions of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in one dimension

Johannes Voit

The extended Hubbard model in one dimension is studied for half-filled bands using a continuum theory based on the Luttinger model. Interactions going beyond the Luttinger model are treated with a renormalization group. We compute correlation functions and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. It compares favorably with earlier numerical work. Specifically, we identify additional interaction terms coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom; one of them is shown to mediate the crossover from a continuous to a first-order transition from spin- to charge-density waves at a finite value of U=2V. Our approach suggests viewing the model on this line as two weakly coupled interpenetrating systems of up-spin and down-spin electrons with strong backscattering interactions favoring charge-density waves separately in each of the subsystems. A first-order transition occurring for attractive interactions is interpreted as a characteristic instability of the Luttinger liquid towards phase separation. We finally discuss a possible equivalence to some recent studies of coupled two-dimensional XY models.

Competing phases and critical behaviour in three coupled spinless Luttinger liquids

Sarbajaya Kundu, Vikram Tripathi

We study electronic phase competition in a strongly correlated system of three coupled spinless Luttinger liquids—one of the simplest models where topologically nontrivial chiral orders may be realized. We study the problem as a coupled sine-Gordon model, using a perturbative renormalization group (RG) approach. In contrast with counterparts with fewer fermionic species, here the scaling procedure generates off-diagonal contributions to the phase stiffness matrix, which require both rescaling as well as large rotations of the bosonic fields. These rotations, generally non-abelian in nature, introduce a coupling between different interaction channels even at the tree-level order in the coupling constant scaling equations. We study competing phases in this system, taking into account the aforementioned rotations, and determine its critical behaviour in a variety of interaction parameter regimes where perturbative RG is possible. The phase boundaries are found to be of the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless type, and we specify the parameter regimes where symmetry breaking between the three flavours of bosonic fields, orders involving different flavours, and chiral orders may be observed. Our approach and findings may be relevant for understanding phases and transitions at high magnetic fields in semimetals such as bismuth featuring three Fermi pockets.

Finite doping of a one-dimensional charge density wave: Solitons vs Luttinger liquid charge density

Yuval Weiss, Moshe Goldstein, Richard Berkovits

The effects of doping on a one-dimensional wire in a charge density wave state are studied using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We show that for a finite number of extra electrons, the ground state becomes conducting but the particle density along the wire corresponds to a charge density wave with an incommensurate+ wave number determined by the filling. We find that the absence of the translational invariance can be discerned even in the thermodynamic limit as long as the number of doping electrons is finite. The Luttinger liquid behavior is reached only for a finite change in the electron filling factor, which for an infinite wire corresponds to the addition of an infinite number of electrons. In addition to the half filled insulating Mott state and the conducting states, we find evidence for subgap states at fillings different from half filling by a single electron or hole. Finally, we show that by coupling our system to a quantum dot, one can have a discontinuous dependence of its population on the applied gate voltage in the thermodynamic limit, similar to the one predicted for a Luttinger liquid without umklapp processes.

Possible phases of two coupled n -component fermionic chains determined using an analytic renormalization group method

E. Szirmai, Jenő Sólyom

A two-leg ladder with $n$-component fermionic fields in the chains has been considered using an analytic renormalization group method. The fixed points and possible phases have been determined for generic filling as well as for a half-filled system and for the case when one of the subbands is half filled. A weak-coupling Luttinger-liquid phase and several strong-coupling gapped phases have been found. In the Luttinger liquid phase, for the most general spin dependence of the couplings, all $2n$ modes have different velocities if the interband scattering processes are scaled out, while $n$ doubly degenerate modes appear if the interband scattering processes remain finite. The role of backward scattering, charge transfer, and umklapp processes has been analyzed using their bosonic form and the possible phases are characterized by the number of gapless modes. As a special case the $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ symmetric Hubbard ladder has been investigated numerically. It was found that this model does not scale to the Luttinger liquid fixed point. Even for generic filling gaps open up in the spectrum of the spin or charge modes, and the system is always insulator in the presence of umklapp processes.

Intermediate Phase of the One Dimensional Half-Filled Hubbard-Holstein Model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Rahul P. Hardikar

We present a numerical study of the Hubbard-Holstein model in one dimension at half filling, including finite-frequency quantum phonons. At half filling, the effects of the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete with the Holstein phonon coupling acting as an effective negative Hubbard on-site interaction U that promotes on-site electron pairs and a Peierls charge-density wave state. Most previous work on this model has assumed that only Peierls or Mott phases are possible at half filling. However, there has been speculation that a third metallic phase exists between the Peierls and Mott phases. We confirm the intermediate phase, and show that the Luttinger liquid correlation exponent K(rho) >1 in this region, indicating dominant superconducting pair correlations. We explore the full phase diagram as a function of Hubbard U, phonon coupling constant, and phonon frequency.

Tricritical behavior in the extended Hubbard chains

Masaaki Nakamura

Phase diagrams of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor interaction $V)$ at half- and quarter-filling are studied by observing level crossings of excitation spectra using the exact diagonalization. This method is based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory including logarithmic corrections which stem from the renormalization of the Umklapp- and the backward-scattering effects. Using this approach, the phase boundaries are determined with high accuracy, and then the structure of the phase diagram is clarified. At half-filling, the phase diagram consists of two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition lines and one Gaussian transition line in the charge sector, and one spin-gap transition line. This structure reflects the $\mathrm{U}(1)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry of the electron system. Near the $U=2V$ line, the Gaussian and the spin-gap transitions take place independently from the weak- to the intermediate-coupling region, but these two transition lines are coupled in the strong-coupling region. This result demonstrates existence of a tricritical point and a bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase between charge- and spin-density-wave (CDW, SDW) phases. To clarify this mechanism of the transition, we also investigate effect of a correlated hopping term, which plays a role to enlarge BCDW and bond-spin-density-wave (BSDW) phases. At quarter-filling, a similar crossover phenomenon also takes place in the large-$V$ region involving spin-gap and BKT-type metal-insulator transitions.
