Abstract

The reduced dynamics of a quantum system interacting with a linear heat bath finds an exact representation in terms of a stochastic Schrödinger equation. All memory effects of the reservoir are transformed into noise correlations and mean-field friction. The classical limit of the resulting stochastic dynamics is shown to be a generalized Langevin equation, and conventional quantum state diffusion is recovered in the Born-Markov approximation. The non-Markovian exact dynamics, valid at arbitrary temperature and damping strength, is exemplified by an application to the dissipative two-state system.

Stochastic simulation of dissipation and non-Markovian effects in open quantum systems

Denis Lacroix A

The exact dynamics of a system coupled to an environment can be described by an integro-differential stochastic equation for the reduced density. The influence of the environment is incorporated through a mean field which is both stochastic and nonlocal in time and where the standard two-time correlation functions of the environment appear naturally. Since no approximation is made, the presented theory incorporates exactly dissipative and non-Markovian effects. Applications to the spin-boson model coupled to a heat bath with various coupling regimes and temperature show that the presented stochastic theory can be a valuable tool to simulate exactly the dynamics of open quantum systems. Links with the stochastic Schrödinger equation method and possible extensions to "imaginary time" propagation are discussed.

Quantum non-Markovian Langevin equations and transport coefficients

Vazgen Valerikovich Sargsyan, Z. Kanokov, G. G. Adamian +1 more

Quantum diffusion equations featuring explicitly time-dependent transport coefficients are derived from generalized non-Markovian Langevin equations. Generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations and analytic expressions for calculating the friction and diffusion coefficients in nuclear processes are obtained. The asymptotic behavior of the transport coefficients and correlation functions for a damped harmonic oscillator that is linearly coupled in momentum to a heat bath is studied. The coupling to a heat bath in momentum is responsible for the appearance of the diffusion coefficient in coordinate. The problem of regression of correlations in quantum dissipative systems is analyzed.

Non- Markovian Quantum Stochastic Equation For Two Coupled Oscillators

E.X. Alpomishev, Z. Kanokov

The system of nonlinear Langevin equations was obtained by using Hamiltonian's operator of two coupling quantum oscillators which are interacting with heat bath. By using the analytical solution of these equations, the analytical expressions for transport coefficients was found. Generalized Langevin equations and fluctuation-dissipation relations are derived for the case of a nonlinear non-Markovian noise. The explicit expressions for the time-dependent friction and diffusion coefficients are presented for the case of linear couplings in the coordinate between the collective two coupled harmonic oscillators and heat bath.

Unified approach to stochastic thermodynamics: Application to a quantum heat engine

Joydip Das, L. R. Rahul Biswas, Bidhan Chandra Bag

In the present study we have developed an alternative formulation for the quantum stochastic thermodynamics based on the c-number Langevin equation for the system-reservoir model. This is analogous to the classical one. Here we have considered both Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics (NMD). Consideration of the NMD is an important issue at the current state of the stochastic thermodynamics. Applying the present formalism, we have carried out a comparative study on the heat absorbed and the change of entropy with time for a linear quantum system and its classical analog for both Markovian and NMD. Here the strength of the thermal noise and its correlation time for the respective cases are the leading quantities to explain any distinguishable feature which may appear with the equilibration kinetics. For another application, we have proposed a formulation with classical look for a quantum stochastic heat engine. Using it we have presented a comparative study on the efficiency and its value at maximum power for a quantum stochastic heat engine and its classical analog. The engines are Carnot like which are coupled with their respective Markovian thermal baths. Here also the noise strength as well as the diffusion constant are the leading quantities to explain any noticeable feature.

Non-Markovian quantum dissipation in the presence of external fields

Ping Cui, Lin, SH, Yan Mo +1 more

This article reviews from both theoretical and numerical aspects three non-equivalent complete second-order formulations of quantum dissipation theory, in which both the reduced dynamics and the initial canonical thermal equilibrium are properly treated in the weak system-bath coupling limit. Two of these formulations are rather familiar as the time-local and the memory-kernel prescriptions, while another which can be termed as correlated driving-dissipation equations of motion will be shown to have the combined merits of the two conventional formulations. By exploiting the exact solutions to the driven Brownian oscillator system, we demonstrate that the time-local and correlated driving-dissipation equations of motion formulations are usually better than their memory-kernel counterparts, in terms of their applicability to a broad range of system-bath coupling, non-Markovian, and temperature parameters. Numerical algorithms are detailed for an efficient evaluation of both the reduced canonical thermal equilibrium state, and the non-Markovian evolution at any temperature, in the presence of arbitrary time-dependent external fields.

Generalized quantum Fokker-Planck, diffusion, and Smoluchowski equations with true probability distribution functions

Suman Kumar Banik, Bidhan Chandra Bag, Deb Shankar Ray

Traditionally, quantum Brownian motion is described by Fokker-Planck or diffusion equations in terms of quasiprobability distribution functions, e.g., Wigner functions. These often become singular or negative in the full quantum regime. In this paper a simple approach to non-Markovian theory of quantum Brownian motion using true probability distribution functions is presented. Based on an initial coherent state representation of the bath oscillators and an equilibrium canonical distribution of the quantum mechanical mean values of their coordinates and momenta, we derive a generalized quantum Langevin equation in c numbers and show that the latter is amenable to a theoretical analysis in terms of the classical theory of non-Markovian dynamics. The corresponding Fokker-Planck, diffusion, and Smoluchowski equations are the exact quantum analogs of their classical counterparts. The present work is independent of path integral techniques. The theory as developed here is a natural extension of its classical version and is valid for arbitrary temperature and friction (the Smoluchowski equation being considered in the overdamped limit).
