Abstract

We examine the quantum fluctuations associated with the Bogoliubov quasiparticle vacuum of coupled dark solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate. We show that the quantum fluctuations appear in the form of incoherent atoms strongly concentrated near the notches. We identify a finite number of collective modes that are responsible for such quantum phenomena. These collective modes describe the particle-like oscillations of coupled dark solitons.

Depletion of the dark soliton: The anomalous mode of the Bogoliubov theory

Jacek Dziarmaga, Krzysztof Sacha

Quantum depletion from an atomic quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a dark soliton is studied in a framework of the Bogoliubov theory. Depletion is dominated by an anomalous mode localized in a notch of the condensate wave function. Depletion in an anomalous mode requires a different treatment than depletion without anomalous modes. In particular, quantum depletion in the Bogoliubov vacuum of the anomalous mode is experimentally irrelevant. A dark soliton is initially prepared in a state with minimal depletion, which is not a stationary state of the Bogoliubov theory. The notch fills up with incoherent atoms depleted from the condensate. For realistic parameters the filling time can be as short as 10 ms.

Dynamic quantum depletion in phase-imprinted generation of dark solitons

C. K. Law

We investigate the quantum fluctuations associated with dark-soliton generation in Bose-Einstein condensates. With the phase imprinting procedure treated as a part of the dynamical process, we present numerical solutions of time-dependent quantum depletion. Our results provide evidence of a rapid growth of noncondensate atoms at dark-soliton notches without making assumptions of final quasiparticle states.

Quantum fluctuations in trapped time-dependent Bose-Einstein condensates

Michael Uhlmann

Quantum fluctuations in time-dependent, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates are studied within Bogoliubov theory. An eigenmode expansion of the linear field operators permits the diagonalization of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation for a stationary condensate. When trap frequency or interaction strength is varied, the inhomogeneity of the background gives rise to off-diagonal coupling terms between different modes. This coupling is negligible for low energies, i.e., in the hydrodynamic regime, and an effective space-time metric can be introduced. The influence of the intermode coupling will be demonstrated in an example, where I calculate the quasiparticle number for a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate subject to an exponential sweep of interaction strength and trap frequency.

Matter-wave dark solitons and their excitation spectra in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Vassos Achilleos, Jan Stockhofe, P. G. Kevrekidis +2 more

We present three types of dark solitons in quasi–one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates. Among these families, two are always stable, while the third one is only stable sufficiently close to the linear regime. The solitons' excitation spectra reveal the potential existence of a second anomalous mode. While the first such mode describes the soliton oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap, the second, when present, reflects the double-well structure of the underlying single-particle spectrum. This novel mode results in moving density stripes in the vicinity of the soliton core, or in an out-of-phase oscillation of the constituent components, with little effect on the nearly stationary striped total density of the composite soliton.

Dark soliton in one-dimensional Bose—Einstein condensate under a periodic perturbation of trap

Chaofei Liu, Ke Hu, Tao Hu +1 more

The perturbation of a confining trap leads to the collective oscillation of a Bose—Einstein condensate, thereby the propagation of a dark soliton in the condensate is affected. In this study, periodic perturbation is employed to match the soliton oscillation. We find that the soliton dynamics depends sensitively on the coupling between the moving direction of the trap and that of the soliton. The soliton energy/depth evolves periodically, and a relevant shift in the soliton trajectory occurs as compared with the unperturbed case. Overall, the soliton oscillation frequency changes little even if the perturbation amplitude and frequency vary.

Dark-dark-soliton dynamics in two density-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Ivan Morera, Antonio Muñoz Mateo, A. Polls +1 more

We study the one-dimensional dynamics of dark-dark solitons in the miscible regime of two density-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates having repulsive interparticle interactions within each condensate ($g>0$). By using an adiabatic perturbation theory in the parameter ${g}_{12}/g$, we show that, contrary to the case of two solitons in scalar condensates, the interactions between solitons are attractive when the interparticle interactions between condensates are repulsive ${g}_{12}>0$. As a result, the relative motion of dark solitons with equal chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$ is well approximated by harmonic oscillations of angular frequency ${w}_{r}=(\ensuremath{\mu}/\ensuremath{\hbar})\sqrt{(8/15){g}_{12}/g}$. We also show that, in finite systems, the resonance of this anomalous excitation mode with the spin-density mode of lowest energy gives rise to alternating dynamical instability and stability fringes as a function of the perturbative parameter. In the presence of harmonic trapping (with angular frequency $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$) the solitons are driven by the superposition of two harmonic motions at a frequency given by ${w}^{2}={(\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}/\sqrt{2})}^{2}+{w}_{r}^{2}$. When ${g}_{12}<0$, these two oscillators compete to give rise to an overall effective potential that can be either single well or double well through a pitchfork bifurcation. All our theoretical results are compared with numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the dynamics and the Bogoliubov equations for the linear stability. A good agreement is found between them.
