Dark soliton in one-dimensional Bose—Einstein condensate under a periodic perturbation of trap

Abstract

The perturbation of a confining trap leads to the collective oscillation of a Bose—Einstein condensate, thereby the propagation of a dark soliton in the condensate is affected. In this study, periodic perturbation is employed to match the soliton oscillation. We find that the soliton dynamics depends sensitively on the coupling between the moving direction of the trap and that of the soliton. The soliton energy/depth evolves periodically, and a relevant shift in the soliton trajectory occurs as compared with the unperturbed case. Overall, the soliton oscillation frequency changes little even if the perturbation amplitude and frequency vary.

Dark solitons as quasiparticles in trapped condensates

Valeriy A. Brazhnyi, V. V. Konotop, Лев П. Питаевский

We present a theory of dark soliton dynamics in trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates, which is based on the local-density approximation. The approach is applicable for arbitrary polynomial nonlinearities of the mean-field equation governing the system as well as to arbitrary polynomial traps. In particular, we derive a general formula for the frequency of the soliton oscillations in confining potentials. A special attention is dedicated to the study of the soliton dynamics in adiabatically varying traps. It is shown that the dependence of the amplitude of oscillations vs the trap frequency (strength) is given by the scaling law ${X}_{0}\ensuremath{\propto}{\ensuremath{\omega}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ where the exponent $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ depends on the type of the two-body interactions, on the exponent of the polynomial confining potential, on the density of the condensate, and on the initial soliton velocity. Analytical results obtained within the framework of the local-density approximation are compared with the direct numerical simulations of the dynamics, showing a remarkable match. Various limiting cases are addressed. In particular for the slow solitons we computed a general formula for the effective mass and for the frequency of oscillations.

Evolution of a dark soliton in a parabolic potential: Application to Bose-Einstein condensates

Valeriy A. Brazhnyi, V. V. Konotop

Evolution of a dark soliton in a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by a harmonic potential is studied analytically and numerically. In the case of a deep soliton, main characteristics of its motion such as frequency and amplitude of oscillations are calculated by means of the perturbation theory which in the leading order results in a Newtonian dynamics, corrections to which are computed as well.

Soliton-Sound Interactions in Quasi-One-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates

NG Parker, Nick P. Proukakis, M. Leadbeater +1 more

Longitudinal confinement of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates leads to sound emission and reabsorption. We perform quantitative studies of the dynamics of a soliton oscillating in a tight dimple trap, embedded in a weaker harmonic trap. The dimple depth provides a sensitive handle to control the soliton-sound interaction. In the limit of no reabsorption, the power radiated is found to be proportional to the soliton acceleration squared. An experiment is proposed to detect sound emission as a change in amplitude and frequency of soliton oscillations.

Dark-dark-soliton dynamics in two density-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Ivan Morera, Antonio Muñoz Mateo, A. Polls +1 more

We study the one-dimensional dynamics of dark-dark solitons in the miscible regime of two density-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates having repulsive interparticle interactions within each condensate ($g>0$). By using an adiabatic perturbation theory in the parameter ${g}_{12}/g$, we show that, contrary to the case of two solitons in scalar condensates, the interactions between solitons are attractive when the interparticle interactions between condensates are repulsive ${g}_{12}>0$. As a result, the relative motion of dark solitons with equal chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$ is well approximated by harmonic oscillations of angular frequency ${w}_{r}=(\ensuremath{\mu}/\ensuremath{\hbar})\sqrt{(8/15){g}_{12}/g}$. We also show that, in finite systems, the resonance of this anomalous excitation mode with the spin-density mode of lowest energy gives rise to alternating dynamical instability and stability fringes as a function of the perturbative parameter. In the presence of harmonic trapping (with angular frequency $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$) the solitons are driven by the superposition of two harmonic motions at a frequency given by ${w}^{2}={(\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}/\sqrt{2})}^{2}+{w}_{r}^{2}$. When ${g}_{12}<0$, these two oscillators compete to give rise to an overall effective potential that can be either single well or double well through a pitchfork bifurcation. All our theoretical results are compared with numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the dynamics and the Bogoliubov equations for the linear stability. A good agreement is found between them.

Dynamical instability of a dark soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate perturbed by an optical lattice

N G Parker, Nick P. Proukakis, C F Barenghi +1 more

The motion of a dark soliton is investigated in a one-dimensional dilute Bose–Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic trap and an optical lattice. The harmonic trap induces a dynamical instability of the soliton, culminating in sound emission. The presence of the perturbing optical lattice enhances the instability, and in addition, dephases the emitted sound waves, thus preventing stabilization of the soliton by sound reabsorption. This instability can be probed experimentally by monitoring the soliton oscillations under various lattice configurations, which can be realized by changing the intensity and angle between the laser beams that form the lattice. For short enough times, such that the emitted sound does not reinteract with the soliton, the power emitted by the soliton is found to be proportional to the square of the local soliton acceleration, which is in turn proportional to the deformation of the soliton profile.
