Abstract

We consider a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in its polar ground state. We analyze magnetization waves of a finite amplitude and show that their nonlinear coupling to density waves dramatically changes the dependence of the frequency on the wave number. On the contrary, the density wave propagation is much less modified by nonlinearity effects. A similar phenomenon in a miscible two-component condensate is also studied.

Multicomponent gap solitons in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Beata J. Dąbrowska-Wüster, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Tristram J. Alexander +1 more

We model the nonlinear behavior of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with repulsive spin-independent interactions and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic (polar) spin-dependent interactions, loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice potential. We show that both types of BECs exhibit dynamical instabilities and may form spatially localized multicomponent structures. The localized states of the spinor matter waves take the form of vector gap solitons and self-trapped waves that exist only within gaps of the linear Bloch-wave band-gap spectrum. Of special interest are the nonlinear localized states that do not exhibit a common spatial density profile shared by all condensate components, and consequently cannot be described by the single mode approximation (SMA) frequently employed within the framework of the mean-field treatment. We show that the non-SMA states can exhibits Josephson-like internal oscillations and self-magnetization, i.e., intrinsic precession of the local spin. Finally, we demonstrate that nonstationary states of a spinor BEC in a lattice exhibit coherent undamped spin-mixing dynamics, and that their controlled conversion into a stationary state can be achieved by the application of an external magnetic field.

Periodic waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions between atoms

A. M. Kamchatnov

We consider periodic waves in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive nonlinear interaction constants. Exact one-phase solution is found for the case when all these constants are equal to each other ( i.e. , for the Manakov limit). New types of nonlinear polarization waves are considered in detail. The connection of the solutions found with experimentally observed periodic structures in two-component condensates is discussed.

Wave Propagations in theF=1 Spinor Bose–Einstein Condensates

Miki Wadati, Naoshi Tsuchida

Propagations of nonlinear waves in the quasi-one dimensional F =1 spinor Bose–Einstein condensates are studied. The three-component macroscopic wavefunction obeys a generalized Gross–Pitaevskii equation (nonlinear Schrödinger equation). Plane wave and solitary wave solutions are obtained explicitly. It is shown that the analysis of the plane waves leads to a classification of solitary waves, which are known as polar solitons and ferromagnetic solitons.

Exact soliton solutions and nonlinear modulation instability in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Lu Li, Zai-Dong Li, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

We find one-, two-, and three-component solitons of the polar and ferromagnetic (FM) types in the general (nonintegrable) model of a spinor (three-component) model of the Bose-Einstein condensate, based on a system of three nonlinearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The stability of the solitons is studied by means of direct simulations and, in a part, analytically, using linearized equations for small perturbations. Global stability of the solitons is considered by means of an energy comparison. As a result, ground-state and metastable soliton states of the FM and polar types are identified. For the special integrable version of the model, we develop the Darboux transformation (DT). As an application of the DT, analytical solutions are obtained that display full nonlinear evolution of the modulational instability of a continuous-wave state seeded by a small spatially periodic perturbation. Additionally, by dint of direct simulations, we demonstrate that solitons of both the polar and FM types, found in the integrable system, are structurally stable; i.e., they are robust under random changes of the relevant nonlinear coefficient in time.

Effects of transverse trapping on the ground state of a cigar-shaped two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

崔国栋, 孙剑芳, 姜伯楠 +2 more

We derive the coupled nonpolynomial nonlinear Schro¨dinger equations for a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-one-dimension geometry and investigate the effects of a tightly transverse trapping on the ground state and the miscibility-immiscibility threshold. We find that the density profile of the matter wavepacket is remarkably dependent on the transverse width and the effective one-dimension nonlinear coupling strengths in miscible and immiscible regimes.

Kelvin wave in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Kenichi Kasamatsu, Maki Okada, Hiromitsu Takeuchi

We study the dispersion relation of Kelvin waves propagating along single- and half-quantum vortices in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates based on the analysis of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. With the help of the interpolating formula connecting the dispersion relations in low- and high-wave-number regimes, we reveal the nontrivial dependence of the dispersion relation on the intercomponent interaction through the change in the vortex-core size of the vortical component. We also find the splitting of the Kelvin wave dispersion into gapless and gapped branches when both components have overlapping single-quantized vortices.
