Abstract

We investigate the effects of the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) interactions on various thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 ladder. Using the Majorana fermion representation, we derive the spectrum of low energy excitations for a pure DM interaction and in presence of a superimposed KSEA interaction. We calculate the various correlation functions for both cases and discuss how they are modified with respect to the case of an isotropic ladder. We also discuss the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of the system and show that it is strongly influenced by the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya vector. Implications of our calculations for nuclear magnetic resonance and ESR experiments on ladder systems are discussed.

Influence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entinwohlman-Aharony superexchange interactions on ground state properties of the one-dimensional spin-Peilers model in open chain

The effects of the Dzyaloshinskii—Moriya (DM) and the Kaplan—Shekhtman—Entinwohlman—Aharony (KSEA) superexchange interactions on the ground state properties of the one-dimensional spin-Peilers system in open chain are studied by using the Lanczos numerical method. The study concentrates mainly on the influence of systemic dimerisation in open chain. The results show that systemic ground state energy density varies with dimerisation parameter δ in different DM interactions, and there exists a special point δc where the DM interaction has no influence on the systemic dimerisation, no matter whether the DM interaction is relative or irrelative to systemic dimerisation (η = 1 or η = 0). The KSEA interaction has no fixed special point, but the points of intersection are dense relatively in a certain numberical value range, and sparse in other numberical value ranges. So we can conclude that the antisymmetric anisotropy DM interaction differs from the symmetric anisotropy KSEA interaction, but they are analogous in the sense of the influence of systemic dimerisation in open chain.

Using a Majorana fermion representation, we discuss the influence of Dzyaloshinski--Moriya interaction on the magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 ladder. We calculate the spin-echo decay rate and analyze the modifications with respect to the isotropic ladder. Implications of our calculations for experiments on ladder systems are discussed.

Ground state properties of the one-dimensional spin-Peilers model with symmetric and antisymmetric superexchange interactions

Hailian Liu, Zhiguo Wang, Chen Yu-Guang +3 more

Ground-state properties of the one-dimensional spin-Peilers model with Dzyaloshi nskii-Moriya(DM)interaction and Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony(KSEA) interactions are studied by Lanczos numerical method. It is shown that the DM interaction acts against dimerization when the DM interaction is irrelative to dimerization. On the other hand, the DM interaction is favorable for dimerization when DM interaction depends on the dimerization. Otherwise, the KSEA interactio n is always against dimerization. The KSEA interaction affects the contribution of the DM interaction to dimerization, and even offsets the effect of DM interac tion. The dimerization vanishes when DM and KSEA interactions are large enough i n some special cases.

The symmetric and antisymmetric superexchange interactions in spin-Peierls system

Liu Hai-Lian, Zhiguo Wang, 杨成全 +2 more

The influences of Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction and Kaplan–Shekhtman–Entinwohlman–Aharony (KSEA) interaction on the dimerization of a spin-Peierls system are investigated theoretically by using the Lanczos numerical method. The ground state of the spin-Peierls system is still dimerized phase when both of the DM and the KSEA interactions have the same value with Heisenberg interaction. It is found that the KSEA interaction and uniform DM interaction are always against systemic dimerization, but the staggered DM interaction acts in favour of dimerization. Furthermore, the influences of the DM and the KSEA interactions are also studied in terms of the ground state index rate and the energy gap index rate of the dimerized Heisenberg system. The results show that the DM interaction makes the index rates larger, while the KSEA interaction makes them smaller.

Ising Phases of Heisenberg Ladders in a Magnetic Field

Karlo Penc, J.-B. Fouet, Shin Miyahara +2 more

We show that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions can substantially modify the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders in a magnetic field provided they compete with exchange. For nonfrustrated ladders, they induce a local magnetization along the DM vector that turns the gapless intermediate phase into an Ising phase with broken translational symmetry, while for frustrated ladders, they extend the Ising order of the half-integer plateau to the surrounding gapless phases of the purely Heisenberg case. Implications for experimental ladder and dimer systems are discussed.

Theory of the electron spin resonance in quantum spin chains with nearest, next-nearest neighbor, and alternating interactions

Andrei A. Zvyagin

The dynamical mean-field-like theory of the electron spin resonance (ESR) in spin-1/2 chains with nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions (or zigzag spin ladders) and alternation is developed. It is explained that either the magnetic anisotropy of spin-spin couplings or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction causes shifts of the resonance position in spin chains, comparing to only magnetically isotropic interactions. The power of the ac ESR field, absorbed by the spin chain, is calculated. It is shown that the temperature dependence of the shift of the resonance position is related to the temperature dependence of the ESR absorption. Depending on the strength of next-nearest neighbor interactions, the shift of the ESR position can become either exponentially small or can be increased near quantum critical points. The absorbed by the alternating spin chain power of the ac magnetic field is calculated, manifesting two resonances. The influence of mentioned spin-spin interactions on the linewidth of the ESR is analyzed.
