Abstract

We establish the phase diagram of the one-dimensional anisotropic Kondo lattice model at T = 0 using a generalized two-dimensional classical Coulomb gas description. We analyze the problem by means of a renormalization group treatment. We find that the phase diagram contains regions of paramagnetism, partial and full ferromagnetic order.

Coulomb gas approach to the anisotropic one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at arbitrary filling

E. Novais, E. Miranda, A. H. Castro Neto +1 more

We establish a mapping of a general spin-fermion system in one dimension into a classical generalized Coulomb gas. This mapping allows a renormalization-group treatment of the anisotropic Kondo chain both at and away from half-filling. We find that the phase diagram contains regions of paramagnetism, partial, and full ferromagnetic order. We also use the method to analyze the phases of the Ising-Kondo chain.

Magnetic order and strongly correlated effects in the one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice

Xiaofan Zhou, Jingtao Fan, Suotang Jia

We investigate the magnetic order and related strongly correlated effects in a one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice with transverse field. This model is the anisotropic limit of the conventional isotropic Kondo lattice model, in the sense that the itinerant electrons interact with the localized magnetic moments via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Adopting the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method, we map out the ground-state phase diagram in various parameter spaces. Depending on the Kondo coupling and filling number, three distinct phases, including a metallic paramagnetic, a metallic ferromagnetic, and a gapped spin-density wave phase, are obtained. The spin-density wave is characterized by an ordering wave vector, which coincides with the nesting wave vector of the Fermi surface. This makes the corresponding magnetic transition a spin analog of the Peierls transition occurring in the one-dimensional metal. Moreover, by analyzing the momentum distribution function and charge correlation function, the conduction electrons are shown to behave like free spinless fermions in the ferromagnetic phase. We finally discuss the effect of the repulsive Hubbard interaction between conduction electrons. Our paper enriches the Kondo physics and deepens the current understanding of the heavy fermion compounds.

Ferromagnetic phases in the Kondo lattice model

Aušrius Juozapavičius, Ian P. McCulloch, M. Gulácsi +1 more

Using an SO(4) invariant density-matrix renormalization group algorithm a sufficient numerical accuracy is achieved to demonstrate new ferromagnetic phase regions inside the paramagnetic area of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice model phase diagram. Spin-spin correlation functions, energy gap, number of singlets and other physical properties are investigated in detail. Direct measurements of the magnetization reveal continuous paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transitions.

Gap formation and phase transition of the anisotropic Kondo necklace model: Density matrix renormalization group analysis

Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, R. Franco, Jereson Silva-Valencia

We analyze the one-dimensional Kondo necklace model, at zero temperature, with an anisotropy parameter $\ensuremath{\eta}$ in the interaction of the conduction chain, by means of the density matrix renormalization group. We calculate the energy gap and estimate the quantum critical points that separate a Kondo singlet state from an antiferromagnetic state, assuming a Kosterlitz-Thouless tendency. We also observe the correlation functions and the structure factors that support our critical points. The resulting phase diagram is presented and compared to that reported previously using Lanczos calculations. It is shown that the quantum critical points vary very slowly with $\ensuremath{\eta}$, but when $\ensuremath{\eta}$ approaches zero, they drop abruptly.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional, two-channel Kondo lattice model

T. Schauerte, Cox, D. L., R. M. Noack +2 more

Employing the density matrix renormalization group method and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we study the phase diagram of the SU(2)xSU(2) Kondo lattice model in one dimension. We show that, at quarter filling, the system can exist in two phases depending on the coupling strength. The weak-coupling phase is dominated by RKKY exchange correlations while the strong-coupling phase is characterized by strong antiferromagnetic correlations of the channel degree of freedom. These two phases are separated by a quantum critical point. For conduction-band fillings of less than one quarter, we find a paramagnetic metallic phase at weak coupling and a ferromagnetic phase at moderate to strong coupling.

Ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice at partial band filling

We compute the magnetic structure factor, the singlet correlation function, and the momentum distribution of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at the density \ensuremath{\rho}=0.7. The density-matrix--renormalization-group method is used. We show that in the weak-coupling regime, the ground state is paramagnetic. We argue that a Luttinger-liquid description of the model in this region is consistent with our calculations. In the strong-coupling regime, the ground state becomes ferromagnetic.
