Lineshapes of dynamical correlation functions in Heisenberg chains

Abstract

We calculate lineshapes of correlation functions by use of complete diagonalization data of finite chains and analytical implications from conformal-field theory, density of states, and Bethe ansatz. The numerical data have different finite-size accuracy in the cases of the imaginary and real parts in the frequency and time representations of spin-correlation functions, respectively. The low-temperature, conformally invariant regime crosses over at ${T}^{*}\ensuremath{\approx}0.7J$ to a diffusive regime that in turn connects continuously to the high-temperature, interacting-fermion regime. The first-moment sum rule is determined.

Computation of dynamical correlation functions of Heisenberg chains: the gapless anisotropic regime

Jean-Sébastien Caux, Rob Hagemans, Jean Michel Maillet

We compute all dynamical spin–spin correlation functions for the spin-1/2 XXZ anisotropic Heisenberg model in the gapless antiferromagnetic regime at zero temperature, using numerical sums of exact determinant representations for form factors of spin operators on the lattice. Contributions from intermediate states containing many particles and string (bound) states are included. We present modified determinant representations for the form factors valid in the general case with string solutions to the Bethe equations. Our results are such that the available sum rules are saturated to high precision. We Fourier transform our results back to real space, allowing us in particular to make a comparison with known exact formulae for equal-time correlation functions for small separations in zero field, and with predictions for the zero-field asymptotics from conformal field theory.

Density dynamics in translationally invariant spin- 12 chains at high temperatures: A current-autocorrelation approach to finite time and length scales

Robin Steinigeweg, Jochen Gemmer B

We investigate transport in several translationally invariant spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains in the limit of high temperatures. We concretely consider spin transport in the anisotropic Heisenberg chain, the pure Heisenberg chain within an alternating field, and energy transport in an Ising chain which is exposed to a tilted field. Our approach is essentially based on a connection between the evolution of the variance of an inhomogeneous nonequilibrium density and the current-autocorrelation function at finite times. Although this relationship is not restricted to the case of diffusive transport, it allows to extract a quantitative value for the diffusion constant in that case. By means of numerically exact diagonalization we indeed observe diffusive behavior in the considered spin chains for a range of model parameters and confirm the diffusion coefficients which were obtained for these systems from nonequilibrium bath scenarios.

Dynamical correlations of S=1/2 quantum spin chains

Rodrigo G. Pereira

Spin-1/2 chains demonstrate some of the striking effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations in one-dimensional systems. The XXZ model has been used to study the unusual properties of anisotropic spin chains in an external magnetic field. The zero temperature phase diagram for this model exhibits a critical or quasi-long-range-ordered phase which is a realization of a Luttinger liquid. While many static properties of spin-1/2 chains have been explained by combinations of analytical techniques such as bosonization and Bethe ansatz, the standard approach fails in the calculation of some time-dependent correlation functions. I present a study of the longitudinal dynamical structure factor for the XXZ model in the critical regime. I show that an approximation for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor in the limit of small momentum transfer can be obtained by going beyond the Luttinger model and treating irrelevant operators associated with band curvature effects. This approach is able to describe the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail at finite magnetic field. Integrability is shown to affect the low-energy effective model at zero field, with consequences for the line shape. The power-law singularities at the thresholds of the particle-hole continuum are investigated using an analogy with the X-ray edge problem. Using methods of Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory, I compute the exact exponents for the edge singularities of the dynamical structure factor. The same methods are used to study the long-time asymptotic behavior of the spin self-correlation function, which is shown to be dominated by a high-energy excitation.

Computation of dynamical correlation functions of the spin-1 Babujan–Takhtajan chain

Rogier Vlijm, Jean-Sébastien Caux

The dynamical structure factor of the Babujan–Takhtajan antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain is computed numerically at zero temperature and zero magnetic field, using the higher spin generalization of an algebraic Bethe ansatz-based method previously used for spin-1/2 integrable chains. This method, which consists in the explicit construction of eigenstates and the summation of the Lehmann representation of the correlator, is particularly challenging to implement here in view of the presence of strongly deviated string solutions to the Bethe equations. We show that a careful treatment of these deviations makes it possible to obtain perfect saturation of sum rules for small system sizes, and extremely good saturation for large system sizes where the dynamical structure factor is computed by including all two-spinon and four-spinon contributions. The real-space spin–spin correlation, obtained by Fourier transforming our results, displays asymptotics fitting predictions from conformal field theory.

Algebraic Bethe ansatz approach to the asymptotic behavior of correlation functions

N Kitanine, Karol Kajetan Kozlowski, Jean Michel Maillet +2 more

We describe a method to derive, from first principles, the long-distance asymptotic behavior of correlation functions of integrable models in the framework of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. We apply this approach to the longitudinal spin–spin correlation function of the XXZ Heisenberg spin- 1/2 chain (with magnetic field) in the disordered regime as well as to the density–density correlation function of the interacting one-dimensional Bose gas. At leading order, the results confirm the Luttinger liquid and conformal field theory predictions.

Entanglement Perturbation Theory for Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Spin Chains

Lihua Wang, S. G. Chung

A recently developed numerical method, entanglement perturbation theory (EPT), is used to study the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains with z-axis anisotropy $λ$ and magnetic field B. To demonstrate the accuracy, we first apply EPT to the isotropic spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, and find that EPT successfully reproduces the exact Bethe Ansatz results for the ground state energy, the local magnetization, and the spin correlation functions (Bethe ansatz result is available for the first 7 lattice separations). In particular, EPT confirms for the first time the asymptotic behavior of the spin correlation functions predicted by the conformal field theory, which realizes only for lattice separations larger than 1000. Next, turning on the z-axis anisotropy and the magnetic field, the 2-spin and 4-spin correlation functions are calculated, and the results are compared with those obtained by Bosonization and density matrix renormalization group methods. Finally, for the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, the ground state phase diagram in $λ$ space is determined with help of the Roomany-Wyld RG finite-size-scaling. The results are in good agreement with those obtained by the level-spectroscopy method.
