Abstract

We investigate the properties of skyrmion in the ferromagnetic state of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates by means of the mean-field theory and show that the size of skyrmion is fixed to the order of the healing length. It is shown that the interaction between two skyrmions with oppositely rotating spin textures is attractive when their separation is large, following a unique power-law behavior with a power of -7/2.

Skyrmions in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

Usama Al Khawaja, Henk T. C. Stoof

The recently realized multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates provide opportunities to explore the rich physics brought about by the spin degrees of freedom. For instance, we can study spin waves and phase separation, macroscopic quantum tunneling, Rabi oscillations, the coupling between spin gradients and superfluid flow, squeezed spin states, vortices and other topological excitations. Theoretically, there have been already some studies of the ground-state properties of these systems and their line-like vortex excitations. In analogy with nuclear physics or the quantum Hall effect, we explore here the possibility of observing point-like topological excitations or skyrmions. These are nontrivial spin textures that in principle can exist in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. In particular, we investigate the stability of skyrmions in a fictitious spin-1/2 condensate of Rb87 atoms. We find that skyrmions can exist in this case only as a metastable state, but with a lifetime of the order of, or even longer than, the typical lifetime of the condensate itself. In addition to determining the size and the lifetime of the skyrmion, we also present its spin texture and finally briefly consider its dynamical properties.

Skyrmions in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Henk T. C. Stoof

We show that spinor Bose-Einstein condensates not only have line-like vortex excitations, but in general also allow for point-like topological excitations, i.e., skyrmions. We discuss the static and dynamic properties of these skyrmions for spin-1/2 and ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose gases.

Skyrmion excitation in a two-dimensional spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

Hui Zhai, Wei-Qiang Chen, Zhan Wei Xu +1 more

We study the properties of coreless vortices (skyrmions) in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. We find that this excitation is always energetically unstable, it always decays to an uniform spin texture. We obtain the skyrmion energy as a function of its size and position, a key quantity in understanding the decay process. We also point out that the decay rate of a skyrmion with high winding number will be slower. The interaction between skyrmions and other excitation modes are also discussed.

Topological excitations in rotating spin–orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates with in-plane gradient magnetic field

Hui Yang, Xianghua Su, Yu Zhang +1 more

Abstract We investigate the topological excitations of rotating spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose–Einstein condensates with spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in an in-plane quadrupole field. Such a system sustains a rich variety of exotic vortex structures due to the spinor order parameter and the interplay among in-plane quadrupole field, SOC, rotation, and interatomic interaction. For the nonrotating case, with the increase of the quadrupole field strength, the system experiences a transition from a coreless polar-core vortex with a bright soliton to a singular polar-core vortex with a density hole. Without rotation but with a fixed quadrupole field, when the SOC strength increases, the system transforms from a central Mermin–Ho vortex into a criss-crossed vortex–antivortex string lattice. For the rotating case, we give a phase diagram with respect to the quadrupole field strength and the SOC strength. It is shown that the rotating system supports four typical quantum phases: vortex necklace, diagonal vortex chain cluster, single diagonal vortex chain, and few vortex states. Furthermore, the system favors novel spin textures and skyrmion excitations including an antiskyrmion, a criss-crossed half-skyrmion–half-antiskyrmion lattice, a skyrmion-meron necklace, a symmetric half-skyrmion lattice, and an asymmetric skyrmion-meron lattice.

Bimeron in a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensate

Yong-Kai Liu, Ning Yue, Jian-Jun Zhang +1 more

The spin degrees of freedom in multicomponent Bose–Einstein condensates allow for various types of topological excitations, such as skyrmions and knots. Systems with high spins offer a broader range of internal symmetries. For instance, in spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates, one can observe not only the two-dimensional (2D) skyrmion spin texture but also the bimeron spin texture. However, it remains challenging to experimentally create or stabilize a bimeron and identify the conditions that facilitate its formation. In this context, our research predicts a novel form of topological structure known as the domain wall bimeron in ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates by manipulating the magnetic field. Unlike conventional 2D skyrmions, this unique bimeron exhibits a non-axisymmetric spin texture and features complex off-axis vortices whose cores are connected by domain walls. This work significantly contributes to the study of 2D topological excitations in quantum matter with high spins.

Observation of Topologically Stable 2D Skyrmions in an Antiferromagnetic Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

Jae-yoon Choi, Woo Jin Kwon, Yong-il Shin

We present the creation and time evolution of two-dimensional Skyrmion excitations in an antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Using a spin rotation method, the Skyrmion spin textures were imprinted on a sodium condensate in a polar phase, where the two-dimensional Skyrmion is topologically protected. The Skyrmion was observed to be stable on a short time scale of a few tens of ms but to dynamically deform its shape and eventually decay to a uniform spin texture. The deformed spin textures reveal that the decay dynamics involves breaking the polar phase inside the condensate without having topological charge density flow through the boundary of the finite-sized sample. We discuss the possible formation of half-quantum vortices in the deformation process.
