Abstract

We present the creation and time evolution of two-dimensional Skyrmion excitations in an antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Using a spin rotation method, the Skyrmion spin textures were imprinted on a sodium condensate in a polar phase, where the two-dimensional Skyrmion is topologically protected. The Skyrmion was observed to be stable on a short time scale of a few tens of ms but to dynamically deform its shape and eventually decay to a uniform spin texture. The deformed spin textures reveal that the decay dynamics involves breaking the polar phase inside the condensate without having topological charge density flow through the boundary of the finite-sized sample. We discuss the possible formation of half-quantum vortices in the deformation process.

Imprinting Skyrmion spin textures in spinor Bose–Einstein condensates

Jae-yoon Choi, Woo Jin Kwon, Moonjoo Lee +3 more

We investigate an experimental method for imprinting Skyrmion spin textures in a spinor Bose–Einstein condensate by rapidly moving the zero-field center of a three-dimensional (3D) quadrupole magnetic field through the condensate. Various excitations such as 2D Skyrmions and coreless vortices were created in spin-1 sodium condensates, initially prepared in a uniform polar or ferromagnetic phase. The spin textures were characterized with the spatial distribution of the spin tilt angle, which is found to be in good quantitative agreement with the local description of single spins under the field rotation. We demonstrate the creation of a highly charged Skyrmion in a trapped condensate by applying the imprinting process multiple times.

Skyrmion excitation in a two-dimensional spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the properties of coreless vortices (skyrmions) in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. We find that this excitation is always energetically unstable, it always decays to an uniform spin texture. We obtain the skyrmion energy as a function of its size and position, a key quantity in understanding the decay process. We also point out that the decay rate of a skyrmion with high winding number will be slower. The interaction between skyrmions and other excitation modes are also discussed.

Stable double-pair skyrmion in an antiferromagneticF= 1 Bose–Einstein condensate

Yong-Kai Liu, Shi-Jie Yang

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in spin-1 ultracold atoms opens up an interesting avenue for exploring new quantum states and novel quantum phenomena in large-spin systems. Two types of two-dimensional double-pair vortices that are connected by a domain-wall can be accommodated in the antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). One type, named a 2D double-pair skyrmion, which differs from the conventional 2D skyrmion in the F = 1 polar BEC, hosts a pair of vortices and displays a meron-pair texture with a unit topological charge. The other type has a meron-pair texture but with null topological charge. These two types of double-pair vortices can be naturally generated from a vortex-free Gaussian wave packet by incorporating a non-Abelian gauge field into the spinor condensate.

Skyrmions in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

Usama Al Khawaja, Henk T. C. Stoof

The recently realized multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates provide opportunities to explore the rich physics brought about by the spin degrees of freedom. For instance, we can study spin waves and phase separation, macroscopic quantum tunneling, Rabi oscillations, the coupling between spin gradients and superfluid flow, squeezed spin states, vortices and other topological excitations. Theoretically, there have been already some studies of the ground-state properties of these systems and their line-like vortex excitations. In analogy with nuclear physics or the quantum Hall effect, we explore here the possibility of observing point-like topological excitations or skyrmions. These are nontrivial spin textures that in principle can exist in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. In particular, we investigate the stability of skyrmions in a fictitious spin-1/2 condensate of Rb87 atoms. We find that skyrmions can exist in this case only as a metastable state, but with a lifetime of the order of, or even longer than, the typical lifetime of the condensate itself. In addition to determining the size and the lifetime of the skyrmion, we also present its spin texture and finally briefly consider its dynamical properties.

Creation and dynamics of two-dimensional skyrmions in antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Tuomas Ollikainen, Emmi Ruokokoski, Mikko Möttönen

We numerically simulate the creation process of two-dimensional skyrmionic excitations in antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates by solving the full three-dimensional dynamics of the system from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our simulations reproduce quantitatively the experimental results of Choi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 035301 (2012)] without any fitting parameters. Furthermore, we examine the stability of the skyrmion by computing the temporal evolution of the condensate in a harmonic potential. The presence of both the quadratic Zeeman effect and dissipation in the simulations is vital for reproducing the experimentally observed decay time.

Creation and dynamics of topological structures in Bose–Einstein condensates

Tuomas Ollikainen

Topology provides deep conceptual links between the various branches of physics. Bose–Einstein condensates with spin degrees of freedom are among the most accessible quantum systems available for studying topological structures. A wide range of topological defects and textures available in condensates, such as vortices, monopoles, knots, and skyrmions, are analogous to those predicted in electromagnetism, high-energy physics, and cosmology. In this dissertation, we numerically and experimentally investigate novel creation methods for topological structures and study their dynamical properties. Specifically, we experimentally observe the evolution of an isolated monopole into a Dirac monopole in the presence of a quadrupole magnetic field. The Dirac monopole appears in the synthetic magnetic field of the condensate and is accompanied by spontaneously emerging nodal lines. We observe the decay of a quantum knot into a polar-core spin vortex in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Furthermore, we observe that a decaying coreless-vortex state gives rise to a pair of singular SO(3) vortices. Many of the studied creation methods for topological structures in the condensate rely on adiabatic control of the external magnetic field. The counterdiabatic protocol offers a way to speed up the otherwise slow magnetic field driving required for adiabatic dynamics with a correcting magnetic field. Using this method, we numerically implement a scheme for fast vortex pumping which leads to the vortex with highest angular momentum reported to date in Bose–Einstein condensates with experimentally feasible methods. We further use the counterdiabatic protocol in a novel way to create quantum knots in the condensate. Another focal point of this dissertation is the study on different types of skyrmions in spinor condensates. Our simulations of two-dimensional skyrmions are in a quantitative agreement with an experiment carried out elsewhere, explaining the experimentally observed instabilities. We numerically analyze the exotic spin-2 skyrmions available in the cyclic and biaxial nematic phases. Importantly, we present the first experimental observations of Shankar skyrmions in spin-1 condensates and analyze their synthetic electromagnetic properties. This dissertation addresses an extensive amount of topological structures available in the condensate, but many different structures await future studies. In addition, the precise computational characterization of the elementary excitations of monopoles, knots, and skyrmions is of great interest.
