Algebraic Fermi Liquid from Phase Fluctuations: “Topological” Fermions, Vortex “Berryons,” and QED3 Theory of Cuprate Superconductors

Abstract

Within the phase fluctuation model for the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors we identify a novel statistical "Berry phase" interaction between the nodal quasiparticles and fluctuating vortex-antivortex excitations. The effective action describing this model assumes the form of an anisotropic Euclidean quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions (QED (3)) and naturally generates non-Fermi liquid behavior for its fermionic excitations. The doping axis in the x -T phase diagram emerges as a quantum critical line which regulates the low energy fermiology.

Quantum Criticality of d -Wave Quasiparticles and Superconducting Phase Fluctuations

Oskar Vafek, Zlatko Tešanović

We present finite temperature (T) extension of the (2+1)-dimensional QED (QED3) theory of under-doped cuprates. The theory describes nodal quasiparticles whose interactions with quantum proliferated hc/2e vortex-antivortex pairs are represented by an emergent U(1) gauge field. Finite T introduces a scale beyond which the spatial fluctuations of vorticity are suppressed. As a result, the spin susceptibility of the pseudogap state is bounded by T2 at low T and crosses over to approximately T at higher T, while the low-T specific heat scales as T2, reflecting the thermodynamics of QED3. The Wilson ratio vanishes as T-->0; the pseudogap state is a "thermal (semi)metal" but a "spin-charge dielectric." This non-Fermi liquid behavior originates from two general principles: spin correlations induced by "gauge" interactions of quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices and the "relativistic" scaling of the T=0 fixed point.

QED3 as an effective theory of the pseudogap phase in underdoped cuprates

Iorwerth O. Thomas

A version of non‐compact QED in 2+1 dimensions (QED3), with anisotropies introduced by differing Fermi and gap velocities in the spatial directions has been proposed as an effective theory of the SDW‐pseudogap phase transition in underdoped cuprates at T=0. Preliminary simulations using lattice gauge theory techniques suggest that matters are a little more complicated than previously thought; in particular, measurements of the fermion propagator in Landau gauge indicate that one should be cautious in inferring properties of this form of QED3 from those of isotropic QED3.

Theory of the Quantum Critical Fluctuations in Cuprate Superconductors

Vivek Aji, Chandra Mohan Varma

The statistical mechanics of the time-reversal and inversion symmetry breaking order parameter, possibly observed in the pseudogap region of the phase diagram of the cuprates, can be represented by the Ashkin-Teller model. We add kinetic energy and dissipation to the model for a quantum generalization and show that the spectrum of the quantum-critical fluctuations is of the form postulated in 1989 to give the marginal Fermi-liquid properties. The model solved and the methods devised are likely to be of interest also to other quantum phase transitions.
