Abstract

The Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) is used to study non-local corrections to the dynamical mean-field phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Regions of antiferromagnetic, d -wave superconducting, pseudo-gapped non-Fermi liquid, and Fermi liquid behaviors are found, in rough agreement with the generic phase diagram of the cuprates. The non-local fluctuations beyond the mean field both suppress the antiferromagnetism and mediate the superconductivity.

Antiferromagnetism and d -wave superconductivity in cuprates: A cluster dynamical mean-field theory

We present an approach to investigate the interplay of antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model within a numerically exact cluster dynamical mean-field approximation. Self-consistent solutions with two nonzero order parameters exist in a wide range of doping level and temperatures. A linearized equation for the energy spectrum near the Fermi level has been solved. The resulting d-wave gap has the correct magnitude and k dependence, but some distortion compared to the pure ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ superconducting order parameter due to the presence of underlying antiferromagnetic ordering.

Dynamical cluster approximation plus semiclassical approximation study for a Mott insulator and d-wave pairing

Via a dynamical cluster approximation with N c = 4 in combination with a semiclassical approximation (DCA+SCA), we study the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model. We obtain a plaquette antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator, a plaquette AF ordered metal, a pseudogap (or d-wave superconductor) and a paramagnetic metal by tuning the doping concentration. These features are similar to the behaviors observed in copper-oxide superconductors and are in qualitative agreement with the results calculated by the cluster dynamical mean field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CDMFT+CTQMC) approach. The results of our DCA+SCA differ from those of the CDMFT+CTQMC approach in that the d-wave superconducting order parameters are shown even in the high doped region, unlike the results of the CDMFT+CTQMC approach. We think that the strong plaquette AF orderings in the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) with N c = 4 suppress superconducting states with increasing doping up to strongly doped region, because frozen dynamical fluctuations in a semiclassical approximation (SCA) approach are unable to destroy those orderings. Our calculation with short-range spatial fluctuations is initial research, because the SCA can manage long-range spatial fluctuations in feasible computational times beyond the CDMFT+CTQMC tool. We believe that our future DCA+SCA calculations should supply information on the fully momentum-resolved physical properties, which could be compared with the results measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments.

Local order and the gapped phase of the Hubbard model: A plaquette dynamical mean-field investigation

The four-site "DCA" method of including intersite correlations in the dynamical mean-field theory is used to investigate the metal-insulator transition in the Hubbard model. At half-filling a gap-opening transition is found to occur as the interaction strength is increased beyond a critical value. The gapped behavior found in the 4-site DCA approximation is shown to be associated with the onset of strong antiferromagnetic and singlet correlations and the transition is found to be potential energy driven. It is thus more accurately described as a Slater phenomenon (induced by strong short-range order) than as a Mott phenomenon. Doping the gapped phase leads to a non–Fermi-liquid state with a Fermi surface only in the nodal regions and a pseudogap in the antinodal regions at lower dopings x ≲0.15 and to a Fermi-liquid phase at higher dopings.

Finite-temperature exact diagonalization cluster dynamical mean-field study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Pseudogap, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, and particle-hole asymmetry

The effect of doping in the two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied within finite-temperature exact diagonalization combined with cluster dynamical mean-field theory. By employing a mixed basis involving cluster sites and bath molecular orbitals for the projection of the lattice Green's function onto $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ clusters, a considerably more accurate description of the low-frequency properties of the self-energy is achieved than in a pure site picture. To evaluate the phase diagram, the transition from Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid behavior for decreasing hole doping is studied as a function of Coulomb energy, next-nearest-neighbor hopping, and temperature. The self-energy component ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{X}$ associated with $X=(\ensuremath{\pi},0)$ is shown to develop a collective mode above ${E}_{F}$, whose energy and strength exhibits a distinct dispersion with doping. This low-energy excitation gives rise to non-Fermi-liquid behavior as the hole doping decreases below a critical value ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}$, and to an increasing particle-hole asymmetry, in agreement with recent photoemission data. This behavior is consistent with the removal of spectral weight from electron states above ${E}_{F}$ and the opening of a pseudogap, which increases with decreasing doping. The phase diagram reveals that ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}0.15\dots{}0.20$ for various system parameters. For electron doping, the collective mode of ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{X}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ and the concomitant pseudogap are located below the Fermi energy, which is consistent with the removal of spectral weight from the hole states just below ${E}_{F}$. The critical doping, which marks the onset of non-Fermi-liquid behavior, is systematically smaller than for hole doping.

Phase diagram and criticality of the three dimensional Hubbard model

Almost 50 years after the invention of the Hubbard model [1–3] and despite modern petaflop supercomputers, a precise analysis of the criticality of this most basic model for electronic correlations has not been achieved so far, at least not in three dimensions. Dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) [4–6] was a big step forward to quantitatively calculate the three dimensional Hubbard model since the major contribution of electronic correlations, i.e., the local ones, are well captured within this theory. Local correlations give rise to quasiparticle renormalization, the Mott-Hubbard transition, magnetism, and even more subtle issues such as kinks in a purely electronic models [7]. However, non-local spatial correlations are also naturally generated by a purely local Hubbard interaction, and, as it is well known, they become of essential importance in the vicinity of secondorder phase transitions. As these correlations are neglected in DMFT, this scheme can provide only for a conventional mean-field (MF) description of the critical properties. To overcome this shortcoming cluster extensions to DMFT such as the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) and cluster-DMFT have been proposed, see Ref. 8 for a review. In these approaches non-local correlations beyond DMFT are taken into account, however only within the range of the cluster size; and due to computational limitations the actual size of the cluster is severely restricted to about 3-5 sites for each direction. Hence, short-range correlations are included by these approaches, whereas long-range ones are not. Nonetheless, Kent et al. [9] were able to extrapolate the cluster size of so-called Betts clusters to infinity, albeit assuming from the very beginning the critical exponents to be those of the Heisenberg model. This way they extrapolated the critical temperature of the paramagnetic-toantiferromagnetic phase transition which was found to be in agreement with earlier quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of Staudt et al. [10] on finite lattices.
