Abstract

We investigate the excited stationary states of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in harmonic potentials. We derive simple analytical approximations of the first few eigenstates of the associated time-independent one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and their energies. Our results are excited state generalizations of the Thomas-Fermi approximation of the ground state.

Ground-state properties of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates: Extension of the Thomas-Fermi approximation

Antonio Muñoz Mateo, V. Delgado

We derive general approximate formulas that provide with remarkable accuracy the ground-state properties of any mean-field scalar Bose-Einstein condensate with short-range repulsive interatomic interactions, confined in arbitrary cylindrically symmetric harmonic traps. Our formulation is even applicable for condensates containing a multiply quantized axisymmetric vortex. We have checked the validity of our formulas by numerically solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATE IN A QUARTIC POTENTIAL: STATIC AND DYNAMIC PROPERTIES

G. K. CHAUDHARY, AMIT K. CHATTOPADHYAY, R. RAMAKUMAR

In this paper, we present a theoretical study of a Bose–Einstein condensate of interacting bosons in a quartic trap in one-, two- and three-dimensions. Using Thomas–Fermi approximation, suitably complemented by numerical solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we study the ground-state condensate density profiles, the chemical potential, the effects of cross-terms in the quartic potential, temporal evolution of various energy components of the condensate and width oscillations of the condensate. Results obtained are compared with corresponding results for a bose condensate in a harmonic confinement.

Analytical solutions for the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap

Yu-Ren Shi, Xue-Ling Wang, Guanghui Wang +3 more

The homotopy analysis method and Galerkin spectral method are applied to find the analytical solutions for the Gross-Pitaevskii equations, a set of nonlinear Schrödinger equation used in simulation of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a harmonic potential. We investigate the one-dimensional case and get the approximate analytical solutions successfully. Comparisons between the analytical solutions and the numerical solutions have been made. The results indicate that they are in agreement well with each other when the atomic interaction is weakly. We also find a class of exact solutions for the stationary states of the spin-1 system with harmonic potential for a special case.

Analytical calculations on Landau damping of collective modes in anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates

Xiaodong Ma, Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

We develop an analytical approach for calculating the Landau damping of collective modes in the Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by an anisotropic harmonic potential. Based on a variational ground-state wave function obtained by solving the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation beyond Thomas-Fermi approximation, we solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations describing thermal excited quasiparticles and provide divergence-free analytical solutions for the Bogoliubov amplitudes and coupling matrix elements that characterize the interaction between the collective modes and the quasiparticles. With these analytical results we evaluate the Landau damping rates of several collective modes for various anisotropic parameters of the trapping potential in terms of the formulas derived from a time-dependent mean-field theory. In addition, we discuss the dependence of the damping rates on temperature, particle number, trapping frequency, and anisotropic parameter of the system, and compare our theoretical results with experimental and numerical data reported in literature.

Stationary states of Bose-Einstein condensates in single- and multi-well trapping potentials

Roberto D’Agosta, Boris A. Malomed, Carlo Presilla A

The stationary solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can be divided in two classes: those which reduce, in the limit of vanishing nonlinearity, to the eigenfunctions of the associated Schrödinger equation and those which do not have linear counterpart. Analytical and numerical results support an existence condition for the solutions of the first class in terms of the ratio between their proper frequency and the corresponding linear eigenvalue. For one-dimensional confined systems, we show that solutions without linear counterpart do exist in presence of a multi-well external potential. These solutions, which in the limit of strong nonlinearity have the form of chains of dark or bright solitons located near the extrema of the potential, represent macroscopically excited states of a Bose-Einstein condensate and are in principle experimentally observable.
