Abstract

In this paper, we present a theoretical study of a Bose–Einstein condensate of interacting bosons in a quartic trap in one-, two- and three-dimensions. Using Thomas–Fermi approximation, suitably complemented by numerical solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we study the ground-state condensate density profiles, the chemical potential, the effects of cross-terms in the quartic potential, temporal evolution of various energy components of the condensate and width oscillations of the condensate. Results obtained are compared with corresponding results for a bose condensate in a harmonic confinement.

Validity of Gross–Pitaevskii solutions of harmonically confined BEC gases in reduced dimensions

R Zamora-Zamora, G A Domínguez-Castro, C Trallero-Giner +2 more

Abstract By exact numerical solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation in 3D, we assess the validity of 1D and 2D approximations in the study of Bose–Einstein condensates confined in harmonic trap potentials. Typically, these approximations are performed when one or more of the harmonic frequencies are much greater than the remaining ones, using arguments based on the adiabatic evolution of the initial approximated state. Deviations from the 3D solution are evaluated as a function of both the effective interaction strength and the ratio between the trap frequencies that define the reduced dimension where the condensate is confined. The observables analyzed are both of stationary and dynamical character, namely, the chemical potential, the wave function profiles, and the time evolution of the approximated 1D and 2D stationary states, considered as initial states in the 3D GP equation. Our study, besides setting quantitative limits on approximations previously developed, should be useful in actual experimental studies where quasi-1D and quasi-2D conditions are assumed. From a qualitative perspective, 1D and 2D approximations certainly become valid when the anisotropy is large, but in addition the interaction strength needs to be above a certain threshold.

A two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing Bose-Einstein condensation in an axial symmetry non-harmonic trap is solved.Converged wave functions, chemical potentials, and internal energies in Bose-Einstein condensation are obtained.Ground-state of Bose-Einstein condensation with atomic interaction is investigated.A comparison between harmonic and non-harmonic traps is reported.

Two-species Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice: analytical approximate formulae

R. Cipolatti, Leonardo Villegas-Lelovsky, Ming-Chiang Chung +1 more

Abstract Employing a general variational method and perturbation theory, we derived explicit solutions for the description of one-dimensional two species Bose–Einstein condensates confined by a harmonic trap potential in an optical lattice. We consider the system of two coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations (GPE) and derive explicit expressions for the chemical potentials and wavefunctions in terms of the atom–atom interaction parameters and laser intensity. We have compared our results with the numerical solutions of the GPE and performed a quantitative analysis for the both considered methods. We underline the importance of the obtained explicit solutions to characterize the density profile or degree of miscibility of the two components.

Scaling equations for Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics across all interaction regimes

D. C. Marinica, C. Puertas González, T. Estrampes +5 more

We derive a unified set of scaling equations for Bose-Einstein condensates in time-dependent harmonic traps, connecting the weakly interacting Gaussian regime to the strongly interacting Thomas-Fermi regime. The exact Gross-Pitaevskii ground-state density is taken as a fixed profile in rescaled coordinates, with its dynamics described by three scaling factors corresponding to compression or expansion along the three spatial directions. The resulting equations contain no adjustable parameter, since their coefficients are determined once from the initial state. They recover analytically the Gaussian variational and Thomas-Fermi scaling equations in their respective limits and satisfy an axis-resolved virial theorem. The approach also yields the global phase and the low-lying collective-mode frequencies of the condensate. We benchmark the model against three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulations and against measured expansion energies. The model remains accurate across all interaction regimes, in strongly anisotropic traps, and along time-dependent sequences including a relatively fast quench, up to the point where the underlying frozen-profile hypothesis, shared by all three scaling approaches, breaks down.

Low-lying modes of trapped condensed atoms in anharmonic trap

Hamid Al-Jibbouri

We describe the physical properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEc) confined by a three-dimensional harmonic plus cubic and quartic trap. To this end, we solve the time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation within a variational approach in order to obtain a set of second ordinary differential equations for the condensate widths. We then discuss in detail the low-lying oscillation modes, in an anharmonic trap where the anharmonicity of the confining potential leads to significant effect on the collective excitations of the system.
