Nucleation of bended vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates in elongated traps

Abstract

We study the generation of vortices in rotating axially elongated magneto-optical traps, a situation which has been realized in a recent experiment (K. W. Madison, F. Chevy, W. Wohlleben, J. Dalibard, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 806 (2000)). We predict that at a critical frequency the condensate experiences a symmetry breaking and changes from a convex cloud to a state with one bended vortex. We also discuss several effects which enlarge the critical frequency with respect to other geometries of the trap: these are, (i) the failure of the Thomas-Fermi approximation on the transverse degrees of freedom of the condensate, (ii) the enhancement of the transverse asymmetry of the trap by means of rotation and (iii) the yet unobserved bending of the vortex lines.

Vortex nucleation and hysteresis phenomena in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

Juan José García‐Ripoll, Víctor M. Pérez‐García

We study the generation of vortices in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, a situation that has been realized in a recent experiment [K. W. Madison, F. Chevy, W. Wohlleben, and J. Dalibard, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 806 (2000)]. By combining a linear stability analysis with the global optimization of the nonlinear free-energy functional, we study the regimes that can be reached in current experiments. We find a hysteresis phenomenon in the vortex nucleation due to the metastabilization of the vortexless condensate. We also prove that for a fast enough rotating trap, the ground state of the condensate hosts one or more bent vortex lines.

Anomalous Modes Drive Vortex Dynamics in Confined Bose-Einstein Condensates

David L. Feder, Anatoly A. Svidzinsky, Alexander L. Fetter +1 more

The dynamics of vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated both analytically and numerically. In axially symmetric traps, the critical rotation frequency for metastability of an isolated vortex coincides with the largest vortex precession frequency (or anomalous mode) in the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum. The number of anomalous modes increases for an elongated condensate. The largest mode frequency exceeds the thermodynamic critical frequency and the nucleation frequency at which vortices are created dynamically. Thus, anomalous modes describe both vortex precession and the critical rotation frequency for creation of the first vortex in an elongated condensate.

Shape of vortices for a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

Amandine Aftalion, Robert L. Jerrard

For a Bose-Einstein condensate placed in a rotating trap, we study the simplified energy of a vortex line derived by Aftalion and Riviere [Phys. Rev. A 64, 043611 (2001)] in order to determine the shape of the vortex line according to the rotational velocity and the elongation of the condensate. The energy reflects the competition between the length of the vortex, which needs to be minimized taking into account the anisotropy of the trap, and the rotation term, which pushes the vortex along the z axis. We prove that if the condensate has the shape of a pancake, the vortex stays straight along the z axis, while in the case of a cigar, the vortex is bent. We study the local stability of the straight vortex and find an estimate for the critical angular speed at which bent vortices are nucleated. When vortices are nucleated, we prove that they must have some finite length.

Anomalous rotational properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in asymmetric traps

Juan José García‐Ripoll, Víctor M. Pérez‐García

We study the rotational properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a rotating harmonic trap for different trap anisotropies. With simple arguments, we obtain the velocity field of the quantum fluid for condensates with or without a centered vortex. While the bosons describe open spiraling trajectories, on the frame of reference of the rotating trap, the fluid moves against the trap's rotation. We also find expressions for the angular momentum of linear and Thomas-Fermi solutions for a vortexless state. In these two limits we find the same analytic relation between the shape of the cloud and the rotation speed. Our predictions are supported by numerical simulations of the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii model and by current experiments with rotating Bose-Einstein condensates (K. W. Madison, F. Chevy, V. Bretin, and J. Dalibard, e-print cond-mat/0101051).

Nucleation of vortex arrays in rotating anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates

David L. Feder, Charles W. Clark, Barry I. Schneider

The nucleation of vortices and the resulting structures of vortex arrays in dilute, trapped, zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated numerically. Vortices are generated by rotating a three-dimensional, anisotropic harmonic atom trap. The condensate ground state is obtained by propagating the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in imaginary time. Vortices first appear at a rotation frequency significantly larger than the critical frequency for vortex stabilization, consistent with a critical velocity mechanism for vortex nucleation. At higher frequencies, the structures of the vortex arrays are strongly influenced by trap geometry.

Vortex bending and tightly packed vortex lattices in Bose-Einstein condensates

Juan José García‐Ripoll, Víctor M. Pérez‐García

We study in detail the structure of the ground state of elongated rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. This ground state is composed of one or more vortex lines which bend even in completely symmetric setups. This symmetry breaking allows the condensate to smoothly adapt to rotation and to produce tightly packed arrays of vortex lines. The dependence of vortex bending on the relevant parameters is studied.
