Effect of the Orbital Level Difference in Doped Spin-1 Chains

Abstract

Doping of a two-orbital chain with mobile S=1/2 Fermions and strong Hund's rule couplings stabilizing the S=1 spins strongly depends on the presence of a level difference among these orbitals. By DMRG methods we find a finite spin gap upon doping and dominant pairing correlations without level-difference, whereas the presence of a level difference leads to dominant charge density wave (CDW) correlations with gapless spin-excitations. The string correlation function also shows qualitative differences between the two models.

Doped Two Orbital Chains with Strong Hund's Rule Couplings - Ferromagnetism, Spin Gap, Singlet and Triplet Pairings

Beat Ammon, Masatoshi Imada

Different models for doping of two-orbital chains with mobile $S=1/2$ fermions and strong, ferromagnetic (FM) Hund's rule couplings stabilizing the S=1 spins are investigated by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. The competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and FM order leads to a rich phase diagram with a narrow FM region for weak AF couplings and strongly enhanced triplet pairing correlations. Without a level difference between the orbitals, the spin gap persists upon doping, whereas gapless spin excitations are generated by interactions among itinerant polarons in the presence of a level difference. In the charge sector we find dominant singlet pairing correlations without a level difference, whereas upon the inclusion of a Coulomb repulsion between the orbitals or with a level difference, charge density wave (CDW) correlations decay slowest. The string correlation functions remain finite upon doping for all models.

Spin-1 Chain Doped with Mobile S=1/2 Fermions

Beat Ammon, Masatoshi Imada

We investigate the doping of a two-orbital chain with mobile $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1/2$ fermions as a valid model for ${\mathrm{Y}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{x}{\mathrm{BaNiO}}_{5}$. The $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$ spins are stabilized by strong, ferromagnetic Hund's rule couplings. We calculate correlation functions and thermodynamic quantities by density matrix renormalization group methods and find a new hierarchy of energy scales in the spin sector upon doping. Gapless spin excitations are generated at a lower energy scale by interactions among itinerant polarons created by each hole and coexist with the larger scale of the gapful spin-liquid background of the $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$ chain accompanied by a finite string order parameter.

Deformation of SU(4) singlet spin-orbital state due to Hund’s rule coupling

Hiroaki Onishi

We investigate the ground-state property and the excitation gap of a one-dimensional spin-orbital model with isotropic spin and anisotropic orbital exchange interactions, which represents the strong-coupling limit of a two-orbital Hubbard model including the Hund's rule coupling $(J)$ at quarter filling, by using a density-matrix renormalization group method. At $J=0$, spin and orbital correlations coincide with each other with a peak at $q=\ensuremath{\pi}∕2$, corresponding to the SU(4) singlet state. On the other hand, spin and orbital states change in a different way due to the Hund's rule coupling. With increasing $J$, the peak position of orbital correlation changes to $q=\ensuremath{\pi}$, while that of spin correlation remains at $q=\ensuremath{\pi}∕2$. In addition, orbital dimer correlation becomes robust in comparison with spin dimer correlation, suggesting that quantum orbital fluctuation is enhanced by the Hund's rule coupling. Accordingly, a relatively large orbital gap opens in comparison with a spin gap, and the system is described by an effective spin system on the background of the orbital dimer state.

Correlation functions in the three-chain Hubbard ladder

T. Kimura, Kazuhiko Kuroki, Hideo Aoki

In order to check whether odd-numbered Tomonaga-Luttinger ladders are dominated by antiferromagnetic correlations associated with gapless spin excitations, correlation functions of the doped three-chain Hubbard model are obtained with the bosonization at the renormalization-group fixed point. The correlation of the singlet superconducting pairing across the central and edge chains is found to be dominant, reflecting two gapful spin modes, while the intraedge spin-density-wave correlation, reflecting the gapless mode, is only subdominant. This implies that, when there are multiple spin modes, a dominant superconductivity can arise from the presence of some spin gap(s) despite the coexistence of power-law correlated spins.

Spin-orbital Energy Gap in One-dimensional Spin-orbital Model

Rui Zhu

The spin-orbital energy gap in a one-dimensional spin-orbital model deduced from a degenerate Hubbard model with intrasite Hund rule coupling is studied.By using a mean-field method with SU(4) constraint fermion representation of spins and orbitals the valence bond order parameter,quasi-particle excitation gap and the spin and orbital density-density correlation functions are calculated. It is found that,as the Hund's coupling strength increases the excitation spectra show a gap and the magnetic configuration changes from a frustrating disordered state to a spin ferromagnetic and orbital antiferromagnetic ordered state at J_1/J_2=1/3.

Luther-Emery liquid and dominant singlet superconductivity in the hole-doped Haldane spin-1 chain

Pontus Laurell, J. Herbrych, Gonzalo Álvarez +1 more

We investigate the pairing tendencies in the hole-doped Haldane spin-1 chain. To allow for doping, we extend the original spin chain Hamiltonian into a fermionic model involving a two-orbital Hubbard chain at intermediate or strong repulsive interaction strengths $U$ and for degenerate orbitals. At half filling and large $U$, the ferromagnetic Hund's coupling, ${J}_{\mathrm{H}}$, generates effective spin-1 moments, with antiferromagnetic correlations between sites. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations, we accurately study the system's behavior under light hole-doping. For $U=1.6$ in units of the noninteracting bandwidth and for ${J}_{\mathrm{H}}/U\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.275$, we find that singlet pairing dominates the long-distance physics, establishing this system as a promising platform for repulsively mediated superconductivity. We provide concrete examples of materials that could realize the physics described here. We also provide evidence that the system approaches a Luther-Emery liquid state at large system sizes, reminiscent of the behavior of doped one-orbital two-leg ladders at weak coupling, which also have superconducting tendencies. The numerically calculated central charge approaches one in the thermodynamic limit, indicating a single gapless mode as is expected for the Luther-Emery state. Exponents characterizing the power-law decays of singlet pair-pair and charge density-density correlations are determined, and found to approximately satisfy the Luther-Emery identity.
