Squeezing in the interaction of radiation with two-level atoms

Abstract

We propose a simple experimental procedure to produce squeezing and other non-classical properties like photon antibunching of radiation, and amplification without population inversion. The method also decreases the uncertainties of the angular-momentum quadratures representing the two-level atomic system in the interaction of the two-level atoms with quantized radiation.

Interaction of two two-level atoms with a single-mode squeezed field

Lei Xu, Zhiming Zhang, Jin-lin Chai

The N-photon interaction of two two-level atoms with a single-mode quantized radiation field is studied. The general expression for the state vector of the atom–field system is presented with the probability amplitudes in analytic form. For the initial condition in which the atoms are both at their upper levels and the field is in a squeezed state, we study the time evolution of the atomic population inversions and that of the statistics of the field. We find that the ratio of the two coupling constants, the initial squeezing of the field, and N have significant effects on the features of the atoms and of the field.

Squeezed light interacting with a two-level atom

Zou Ming-liang, Guo Guang-Can

The changes in the properties of squeezed light after interaction with a two-level atom are analysed. The photon count distributions are calculated for the case of an atom initially in the ground state or an excited state. The squeezing and antibunching of the field are discussed. The quadrature variance of the field shows strong oscillations and the squeezing finally disappears.

Mimicking a squeezed-bath interaction: Quantum-reservoir engineering with atoms

Norbert Lütkenhaus, J. I. Cirac, P. Zoller

The interaction of an atomic two-level system and a squeezed vacuum leads to interesting effects in atomic dynamics, including line narrowing in resonance fluorescence and absorption spectra, and a suppressed (enhanced) decay of the in-phase and out-of-phase components of the atomic polarization. On the experimental side these predictions have so far eluded observation, essentially due to the difficulty of embedding atoms in a $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ squeezed vacuum. In this paper we show how to ``engineer'' a squeezed-bath-type interaction for an effective two-level system. In the simplest example, our two-level atom is represented by the two ground levels of an atom with an angular momentum $J=1/\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{2}J=1/2$ transition (a four-level system), which is driven by (weak) laser fields and coupled to the vacuum reservoir of radiation modes. Interference between the spontaneous emission channels in optical pumping leads to a squeezed-bath-type coupling and thus to symmetry breaking of decay on the Bloch sphere. With this system it should be possible to observe the effects predicted in the context of squeezed-bath--atom interactions. The laser parameters allow one to choose properties of the squeezed-bath interaction, such as the (effective) photon-number expectation number $N$ and the squeezing phase $\ensuremath{\varphi}$. We present results of a detailed analytical and numerical study.

Multiphoton model for the interaction of single-mode squeezed-state light with a two-level atom

Shaozheng Jin

Multiphoton interaction of single-mode squeezed-state light and a two-level atom is considered based on the K-photon Jaynes–Cummings model. Time evolution of quantum fluctuation and photon statistical properties of the initial squeezing light are discussed. It is found that through interaction with a two-level atom, larger squeezing levels cannot be achieved in one-photon or multiphoton processes. For photon antibunching behavior of the light field, it is shown that a smaller initial squeezing level and an appropriately larger coherent part of the initial average photon number of the radiation field favor the generation of this nonclassical behavior, especially in the lower-order interaction processes.

Two-photon Jaynes-Cummings systems interacting with a classical field

R. A. Ismailov, Alexander Ya. Kazakov

If a two-level atom is in the two-photon resonance with a quantized mode and simultaneously inter-acts with a quasi-resonance classical field, then a photon exchange is observed in this system between the quantized and classical modes. It is demonstrated that such a physical system can serve as a source of squeezed radiation in the quantized mode. The squeezing can be arbitrarily close to unity, while the radiation amplitude can be relatively large. A situation is discussed when N atoms are in the two-photon resonance with a quantized mode and simultaneously interact with a classical field. The phenomenon of exponential superradiation is described when the number of photons in the quantized mode exponentially depends on the number N of atoms.
