Abstract

We study the stimulated emission of a two-level atom in an electromagnetic wave of circular polarization. The correlation function G(r1t,r2t)=(E^-E^+) of atom radiation fields at dipole approximation are computed. Under the resonance condition, the atom stimulated emission is imfluenced by the circularly polarized electromagnetic wave discussed. We have found that the time-averaged value of energy density does not depend on the initial conditions. We have also deduced the relation between the emission power of an atom and the Rabi frequency Ω.

We study the stimulated emission of a two-level atom in an electromagnetic wave of circular polarization. The correlation function G ( r 1 t , r 2 t ) = ⟨ E - E + ⟩ of atom radiation fields at dipole approximation are computed. Under the resonance condition, the atom stimulated emission is influenced by the circularly polarized electromagnetic wave discussed. We have found that the time-averaged value of energy density does not depend on the initial conditions. We have also deduced the relation between the emission power of an atom and the Rabi frequency Ω.

Two-level atom in an electromagnetic wave of circular polarization

Gao-Jian Zeng, Shi-Lun Zhou, Ao Sheng-Mei +1 more

In this paper, we study the behavior of a two-level atom in an electromagnetic wave of circular polarization. A general solution to the Schr\"odinger equation is obtained, and the action of the electromagnetic wave on the atom is analyzed in detail. It is shown that the levels of the atom would be split, with the energy difference between the split levels the same for the two states of the atom. The atom would acquire an average momentum, with its direction the same as the propagating direction of the electromagnetic wave, showing the expelling action of the electromagnetic wave on the atom; or with its direction opposite to the propagating direction of the electromagnetic wave, showing the trapping action of the electromagnetic wave on the atom. The properties of the action are dependent on the initial state of the atom. The average expelling and trapping forces exerted on the atom by the electromagnetic wave are determined. Two cases of ``resonance'' and ``strict detuning'' are discussed particularly. Under the resonance case, the transition probability reaches its maximum for a given time. In the strict detuning case, the atom is not influenced by the electromagnetic wave.

Resonance-Radiation Force Exerted by a Circularly Polarized Light on an Atomic Wave Packet

YE Yong-hua, Gao-Jian Zeng, Jinhui Li

We study the behaviour of an atomic wave packet in a circularly polarized light, and especially give the calculation of the radiative force exerted by the circularly polarized light on the atomic wave packet under the resonance condition. A general method of the calculation is presented and the result is interesting. For example, under the condition that the wave packet is very narrow or/and the interaction is very strong, no matter whether the atom is initially in its ground state or excited state, as time approaches to infinity, the resonance-radiation force exerted by the light on the atom approaches to zero. If the atom is initially in its ground state and excited state with the probability 1/2 respectively, and if the momentum density is a even function, then the resonance-radiation force exerted by the light on the atom is equal to zero.

The Atom-Lifetime in a Circularly Polarized Electromagnetic Wave

Xiong Zhi

Based on this solution for Schrǒdinger equation, the atom lifetime in an electromagnetic wave of circular polarization is studied. When the frequency of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave is equal to the atomic frequency, the atom lifetime of tow level atom is not influenced by the electromagnetic wave. For a ∧ type three level atom in a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave, we modulate the frequency of the electromagnetic wave to study the atom lifetime and show that the approximate condition in this paper is rational.

Stimulated Raman spectra of a strong bichromatic field interacting with a three-level atom

Constantine Mavroyannis

We have studied the stimulated Raman spectra arising from the interaction of a three-level atom with two strong electromagnetic fields whose initially populated modes ω a and ω b are in resonance with the two atomic transition frequencies. The Green's function formalism has been used in the limit of high photon densities to calculate the excitation spectra near the frequencies ω = ± ω ab = ± (ω a - ω b ). Expressions are derived for the relative intensities, which describe, apart from the usual Raman peak at the frequency ω = ω ab , four pairs of lorentzian lines peaked at the frequencies ω - ω ab = ± Ω a /√2, ± Ω b /√2, ± Ω and ± 2Ω, respectively, and having spectra widths of the order of 3γ0/4. The parameter Ω is defined as Ω2 = (Ω a 2 + Ω b 2)/2, where Ω a and Ω b are the Rabi frequencies of the two laser fields and γ0 is the spontaneous emission probability. Numerical calculations for selected values of the Rabi frequencies are graphically presented and discussed. Conditions have been established for which Raman gain processes are anticipated to take place.

Stimulated two-photon induced transitions at high photon densities

Constantine Mavroyannis

We have considered the excitation spectra arising from stimulated two-photon transitions between two atomic levels of the same parity. The system consists of a three-level atom in the cascade configuration interacting with two strong electromagnetic fields whose initially populated modes ωa and ωb are in resonance with the two atomic transition frequencies, respectively. The Green function formalism is used to calculate the spectral function of the system near the frequencies ω=ωa+ωb, in the limit of high photon densities. The excitation spectra consist of Lorentzian lines peaked at the frequencies ω−ωa−ωb=0, ±Ωa/√2, ±Ωb/√2, ±Ω, and ±2Ω, where Ω2=(Ω2a+Ω2b)/2 and Ωa,Ωb are the Rabi frequencies of the two laser fields, respectively. Numerical calculations for selected values of the Rabi frequencies are graphically presented and discussed. The computed two-photon spectra are compared with those arising from the third-order nonlinear mixing of frequencies near ω=ωa+2ωb and ωb+2ωa, respectively, as well as with those of the stimulated Raman spectra near ω=±(ωa−ωb).
