Persistent Spectral Hole Burning Applications in Distributed Data Storage and Processing

Karl K. Rebane

Brief review of zero-phonon lines, persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) and its applications is given. The provided by PSHB additional dimension - the spectral one in optical data storage allows in principle to get densities up to 1012 bit cm−2 or 1016 bit cm−3. In both cases an 1016 cm−3 cell comprising on average only 100 impurity molecules is involved to store a bit. It is a two small amount because of fluctuations in the distribution of impurities over the cells. Parallel processing and distributed data storage, realized in PSHB holography and optical modelling of neural networks, are prospective to utilize the full capacity of PSHB storage and processing.

An investigation of slow light and time delay-bandwitdth in Pr3+:Y2SiO5 by using the persistent spectral hole burning technique

Nan Lin

This master's thesis evaluates the performance of Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 in slow light by utilizing Persistent Spectral Hole Burning (PSHB), i.e. the extremely slow group velocity as well as the time delay-bandwidth product.A novel method that can be used to measure the high optical depth (αL) value is also tested in Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 .This Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal has many brilliant properties for the slow light aspect, such as its high optical depth and the multipass design, which gives it the potential for obtaining a high time delay-bandwidth.Moreover, the spectral hole is created by spectral hole burning and do not need a strong coupling beam applied simultaneous with the probe beam, which avoids the obstruction to the weak signal. This thesis gives basic ideas for obtaining a slow group velocity of light and achieving a high time delay-bandwidth by applying PSHB.And the implements in Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 were done in the experiments. Some difficulties and suggestions for solution are discussed. The suggestion of the future work is also given. Conclusion and outlook 45
