Exact diagonalization studies of a one-dimensional system at electron density rho=0.4: effect of the Coulomb repulsions and distant transfer

Abstract

An extended Hubbard model with large short and long-ranged Coulomb repulsions and distant transfer is numerically investigated by use of the Lanczos exact diagonalization (ED) method to study the charge order and unconditional dimerization of a chain at density rho (ρ)= 0.4. From the analysis of the spin and charge correlation functions, a picture consistent with the formation of a dimer insulating state, which is of Wigner lattice-type (WL) charge order (CO), is obtained. The next-nearest neighbour (NNN) hopping t2 enhances the intradimer correlations and weakens the interdimer correlations. Implications for the CuO2 chains in Sr14Cu24O41 are discussed. We have also introduced a Heisenberg model which parametrically depends on hole positions. If the electrostatic hole-hole repulsion is included such a model allows to evaluate all energy eigenvalues and eigenstates (for small system size) and thus enables us to evaluate thermodynamic properties as function of temperature, magnetic field, and doping. Assuming certain exchange constants we can investigate the influence of the electrostatic hole-hole repulsion on ground state properties as well as on thermal averages like the magnetization which include contributions of low-lying spin-hole configurations.

Exact diagonalization of a one-dimensional Hubbard model at density ρ=0.4 : Effects of Coulomb repulsions and distant transfer

Fatiha Ouchni, Jürgen Schnack, J. Schulenburg

An extended Hubbard model that includes not only on-site but also intersite Coulomb repulsion and distant transfer is numerically investigated using the exact Lanczos diagonalization method for finite-size systems up to $L=20$ sites. The aim is to study the charge order and unconditional dimerization of a chain at density $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.4$. From the analysis of the spin and charge correlation functions, we deduce the formation of a dimer insulating state which is a Wigner lattice-type charge ordered state. The next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}_{2}$ enhances the intradimer correlations and weakens the interdimer correlations. Implications for the $\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ chains in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{14}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{24}{\mathrm{O}}_{41}$ are discussed.

Modeling electron-electron interactions in reduced-dimensional materials: Bond-charge Coulomb repulsion and dimerization in Peierls-Hubbard models

D. K. Campbell, J. Tinka Gammel, Eugene Loh

To the conventional Peierls-Hubbard model, involving both on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) Coulomb repulsions, we add ``off-diagonal'' terms, not expressible purely in terms of site densities, representing bond-bond (W) and mixed bond-site (X) electron-electron repulsive interactions involving nearest neighbors. We review earlier analyses of these interactions and discuss relative magnitudes of the parameters in applications to real materials. As a specific illustration, we investigate the effects of the off-diagonal W and X terms on dimerization in the one-dimensional, half-filled-band Peierls-Hubbard models, which have been widely applied to conjugated polymers (such as trans-polyacetylene) and to related quasi-one-dimensional charge-density wave (CDW) systems. Using both weak- and strong-coupling perturbation theory for large systems and exact diagonalizations of small systems, we investigate thoroughly the nature of the ground state of the model. For a broad range of the site-diagonal Hubbard parameters (U,V), including the values believed to be relevant to trans-polyacetylene, we find that the off-diagonal terms (W,X) initially enhance dimerization, thereby stabilizing the dimerized [or bond-order-wave (BOW)] ground state. For (unphysically) large values of W relative to U and V, dimerization is destroyed, and the BOW ground state goes over to a ferromagnetic ground state or a CDW ground state, depending on the relative sizes of U, V, and W. We conclude with a general discussion of the applicability of the Peierls-Hubbard models to quasi-one-dimensional materials, including the potential importance of the breaking of charge conjugation (``particle-hole'') symmetry by the X term.

Electronic properties of the dimerized one-dimensional Hubbard model using lattice density-functional theory

Román López-Sandoval, G. M. Pastor

The dimerized one-dimensional Hubbard model is studied in the framework of lattice density-functional theory (LDFT). The single-particle density matrix ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ with respect to the lattice sites is considered as the basic variable. The corresponding interaction-energy functional $W[{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}]$ is defined by Levy's constrained search. Exact numerical results are obtained for $W({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{23}),$ where ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12}={\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{i,i+1}$ for odd i and ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{23}={\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{i,i+1}$ for even i are the nearest-neighbor density-matrix elements along the chain. The domain of representability of ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ and the functional dependence of $W({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{23})$ are analyzed. A simple, explicit approximation to $W({\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{12},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{23})$ is proposed, which is derived from scaling properties of W, exact dimer results, and known limits. Using this approximation, LDFT is applied to determine ground-state properties and charge-excitation gaps of finite and infinite dimerized chains as a function of the Coulomb-repulsion strength $U/t$ and of the alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}t$ of the hopping integrals ${t}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ ${(t}_{\mathrm{ij}}=t\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\delta}t).$ The accuracy of the method is demonstrated by comparison with available exact solutions and accurate numerical calculations. Goals and limitations of the present approach are discussed particularly concerning its ability to describe the crossover from weak to strong electron correlations.

Correlations in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

Wei-ming Que

Correlation effects in the one-dimensional Hubbard model are studied by application of the L-resolvent method. The calculations are well beyond one-particle mean field approximation. All correlations involving two neighboring sites are included exactly and higher order correlations are approximated. The effects of varying temperature, band filling, Coulomb repulsion and external magnetic field are investigated. Two-site correlations for non-half-filled band fillings are calculated for the first time. Some exact relations between correlation functions are derived by electron-hole symmetry. Results indicate that short-range spin correlations always favor antiferromagnetic order. Large Coulomb repulsion induces a gap in the excitation spectrum and a metal-insulator transition is predicted as the Coulomb repulsion parameter is changed.

Exact-diagonalization study of the Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor repulsion

Y. Ohta, Kenji Tsutsui, Wataru Koshibae +1 more

An exact-diagonalization technique on small clusters is used to study the ground states and single-particle excitations of the Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) Coulombic repulsive interactions. It is shown that the long-range charge-density-wave state realized in a half-filled two-dimensional square lattice for 4V\ensuremath{\gtrsim}U persists up to quarter filling, and that the doped carriers form a small Fermi surface that encloses an area corresponding to the number of doped carriers rather than the total number of electrons involved in the system. The present result offers a well-defined counterexample in the discussion of the Fermi-surface dimensions of strongly correlated electron systems, and may provide a complementary understanding of the large Fermi surface believed to exist in the ordinary Hubbard model.

Bond-charge interaction in the extended Hubbard chain

Daisy M. Luz, Raimundo R. dos Santos

We study the effects of a bond-charge interaction (or correlated hopping) on the properties of the extended [i.e., with both on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsions] Hubbard model in one dimension at half-filling. Energy gaps and correlation functions are calculated by Lanczos diagonalization on finite systems. We find that, irrespective of the sign of the bond-charge interaction, X, the charge-density-wave (CDW) state is more robust than the spin-density-wave (SDW) state. A small bond-charge interaction term is enough to make the differences between the CDW and SDW correlation functions much less dramatic than when X=0. For X=t and fixed V2t (t is the uncorrelated hopping integral), there is an intermediate phase between a charge ordered phase and a phase corresponding to singly occupied sites, the nature of which we clarify: it is characterized by a succession of critical points, each of which corresponds to a different density of doubly occupied sites. We also find an unusual slowly decaying staggered spin-density correlation function, which is suggestive of some degree of ordering. No enhancement of pairing correlations was found for any X in the range examined. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
