Abstract

The method to pump the FBG w ritten into an Er 3+-doped optical fiber is proposed to increase the group velocity of a probing pulse based on the facts that pump-induced process chan ges the refractive index and dispersion associated with the 4 I_ 15/2- 4I_ 13/2 transition in Er 3+ -doped optical fiber. The system equations are derived. The effects of pump power an d doping concentration on the group velocity are discussed.

Pump-induced refractive index modulation and dispersions in Er/sup 3+/-doped fibers

Carsten Thirstrup, Yuan Shi, Bera Pálsdóttir

A novel measurement system provides determination of pump induced phase shifts in erbium doped fibers with an accuracy of /spl sim//spl pi//20. Using this system, a systematical analysis of the pump induced modulation of the refractive index and dispersions for a signal at 1550 nm and a pump at 980 nm is reported. The analysis contains measurements of pump induced refractive index changes as function of wavelength, pump power, and doping concentration. A model taking account of the contribution to the refractive index changes from optical transitions between /sup 4/I/sub 15/2/ states and /sup 4/I/sub 13/2/ states in Er/sup 3+/ yields good agreement to experimental results apart from a wavelength independent offset. The offset is interpreted to originate from high energetic optical transitions. The results show that for a large refractive index modulation, a short and highly doped fiber should be used with limited amplified spontaneous emission effect. In optical communication systems comprising erbium doped fiber amplifiers, a tradeoff between dispersion and amplification must be made.

Role of incoherent pumping and Er 3+ ion concentration on subluminal and superluminal light propagation in Er 3+ -doped YAG crystal

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

We study the absorption-dispersion process and group index of weak probe field in a four-level Er 3+ :YAG crystal. We find that the Er 3+ ion concentration and incoherent pumping field can influence the absorption-dispersion process and group index of weak probe field. Moreover, our results show that Er 3+ ion concentration plays a major role in lasing without inversion and absorption with inversion.

Erbium-doped fiber Bragg grating based all-optical switch

Bai‐Ou Guan, Shun-Yee Liu, Hwa‐Yaw Tam +1 more

All-optical switching in Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber Bragg grating was investigated. The response time is not limited by the radiative relaxation but by the cooperative ion interaction induced fast nonradiative relaxation in the high concentration Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber. A signal modulation depth of 37% was measured when a 300 mW of 1480 nm pump was modulated at 5 kHz.

Research on the effects of dual pumping on fast light propagation in an Er 3+ -doped optical fiber

Wei Qiu, Yuan Gao, Yuqi Wu +4 more

Abstract In this paper, we propose a general theory for the coherent population oscillation effect in an -doped optical fiber under dual-frequency laser pumping at room temperature. We aim at comparing the effect of dual pumping (1480 nm and 980 nm) with single pumping of 980 nm and single pumping of 1480 nm on time advancement. According to the numerical calculations, we analyze the relationships between relative modulation attenuation and modulation frequency, plus fractional advancement and modulation frequency under the dual-frequency pumping laser with co-propagation. Compared to single pumping, a greater change in the group refractive index can be found. The maximum time advancement of 0.24 ms under a dual-frequency pump laser with co-propagation is obtained. Moreover, we demonstrate the influence of the pump ratio M on time advancement with modulation frequencies of 40 Hz, 100 Hz and 200 Hz. The ability to control the group velocity of light could have an important application for photonics.

Tunable delay slow-light in an active fiber Bragg grating

Kai Qian, Li Zhan, Honggen Li +4 more

We proposed and experimentally demonstrated an extremely simple and feasible slow-light technique to achieve tunable optical delay by using the Er/Yb codoped fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The signal light experiences strong dispersion when it is launched into the reflection edge of FBG, and the group delay value is determined by the signal wavelength and the pump power. In the experiment, a controllable delay of 0.9 ns can be obtained through changing the 980 nm pump power. The group velocity can be slowed down to 5.6x10(7) m/s, which is 19% of the speed of light in free space. It provides a very simple approach to control the light group delay, which is likely to have important implications for practical applications.
